JAMMU, Nov 1: Cpt Dewan Singh, ADC former ruler of Jammu nd Kashmir Maharaja Hari Singh has termed the recent statement of former Sadar-e-Riyasat, Dr Karan Singh that he (late Maharaja) wanted to have accession with Pakistan as baseless and unfortunate. he termed that these allegations have been made to malign the image of former ruler of the state unnecessarily.

Talking to media persons here today, Capt Dewan Singh termed the late Maharaja a true patriot, nationalist and democrat who had no soft corner for Pakistan and never wanted that state of Jammu and Kashmir should merge with that country.

He said Maharaja Hari Singh had no two thoughts about J&K’s accession with India but due to certain reasons the accession process was delayed.

Capt Dewan Singh who had spent over 10 years of life in exile with former ruler of J&K state in Bombay said it was actually his Prime Minister, Mr Ram Chand Kak and a General, Gen. H L Scot who wanted independent Jammu and Kashmir having close ties with Pakistan.

But when the lateMaharaja came to know about it he dismissed Mr Ram Chand Kak and Gen Scot flew to Karachi.

Recalling the past events he said when Pak tribals invaded Kashmir in October, Maharaja Hari Singh flew to Kashmir alongwith Lala Mehar Chand Mahajan to lead his army on war front.

He said the Maharaja put on his uniform and took the pistol to take lead of his troops but it was only on the request of the Chief of His Army Staff, Brig. Rajinder Singh he gave orders to latter to lead his troops.

He said during the Pak attack he did not visit Jammu and stayed in Kashmir till Mr B P Menon Secretary of State Government of India visited Kashmir on October 25 and asked Maharaja that he should not stay in Valley under the prevailing conditions.

While terming the reports totally baseless that Maharaja Hari Singh had fled from Kashmir, Capt Dewan Singh said that he left the Valley on the intervention and persuasion of Mr Menon.

He said on reaching Jammu on October 26, the instrument of Accession was signed at Hotel Hari Niwas here by late Maharaja and Mr Menon.

He said that Maharaja was pursued by the then British Governor General in India, Lord Mount Batton that being the head of a Muslim majority state he should have accession of J&K with Kashmir.

He said even Lord Mount Batton personally visited Kashmir in June to persuade the ruler of the state in this regard. However, this suggestion was tactfully turned down by Hari Singh, Capt Dewan Singh said.

He said the proof of this all can be had from the two books one is Kashmir 1947, Rival Version of History by Mr Prem Shanker Jha and second in Menon’s Book on Kashmir.
