Teach Pakistan a lesson for all times to come: Mulayam

LUCKNOW, July 7: Former Defence Minister and Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav today said he does not believe Pakistani forces would be withdrawn from Kargil.

"Instead of depending on the promise of withdrawal, the Indian forces should take the initiative to teach the enemy a lesson for all times to come," he said while talking to reporters here.

Without mentioning the United States, he also dismissed the idea of allowing any nation to mediate on the Kargil issue. The Indian army was strong enough to thwart any challenge, he said.

Mr Yadav said the armed forces should continue their offensive till every inch of Indian land was freed from the intruders.

Asked whether the forces should cross the Line of Control (LoC), he said "it should be left to the army to decide what action should be taken to drive away the intruders."

He said it was ironical that the forces were fighting in their own territory. A shrewd political leadership would never let such a situation to arise, he added. When asked if the intrusion showed an intelligence failure, Mr Yadav said many such questions would have to be answered by the Government.

Reiterating the demand for a Rajya Sabha session, he said the Government was avoiding it to escape uncomfortable questions on the intrusion.

Reacting sharply to the reported attacks on Nadwa, a respected place of Islamic learning, by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad, he said communal feelings should be then last thing to be aroused "in this hour of crisis."

"Such things are ill-timed and the ruling parties should take care of it," he said. (UNI)

Kargil invasion threat to internal security: Advani

NEW DELHI, July 7: Home Minister L.K. Advani today said the invasion of Kargil by Pakistan army regulars was a threat to the internal security of the country.

The documents and arms seized from the intruders had made it very clear that the invasion was by army regulars. This was a threat not only "to our territory but also to our internal security," Mr Advani said in his opening remarks at the Chief Ministers meet.

The Home Minister said Pakistan had been waging a proxy war for years but this was the first time that army regulars were in the forefront.

The Chief Ministers’ meet was convened by the Prime Minister to discuss the Kargil situation.

The unscheduled meeting was called in view of the unusual situation, Mr Advani said.

He invited the Chief Ministers to visit Vigyan Bhavan, where the seized arms and documents were on display, to gauge the gravity of the situation in Kargil. (UNI)

Leave Shimla seats for HVC, Sukhram tells BJP

SHIMLA, July 7: The Himachal Vikas Congress (HVC) has authorised the party chief Sukhram to take appropriate action in case the BJP failed to reach some reasonable settlement of sharing of seats for the coming Lok Sabha elections.

Addressing a press conference after the meeting of the HVC held here to mark the foundation day of the party, Sukhram said the party workers were restive over the delay in taking the decision by the BJP on its demand for leaving the Mandi and Shimla (reserve) seats.

Sukhram said he was confident that the BJP would take a reasonable decision on the demand of the HVC and the matter would be resolved amicably among the coalition partners on give and take basis.

The HVC chief said he was of the view that the alliance should continue and no action which could create political instability should be taken but all options were open if the BJP did not accommodate the HVC.

Sukhram said the BJP high comand and the Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal were aware of the strength of the HVC and the BJP could not win the Mandi and Shimla seats without the support of the HVC and its position could become vulnerable even on Kangra and Hamirpur seats.

Replying to a question he said the HVC was firm on its demand for constitution of a Coordination Committee for smooth functioning of the coalition Government and it was for the BJP to take follow up action. (PTI)

Govt should adhere to Simla pact: Basu

NEW DELHI, July 7: West Bengal today said the Centre should be cautious of de-facto third party intervention by the United States on the Kashmir issue and asked the Government to scrupulously adhere to the Simla Agreement to resolve the problem bilaterally with Pakistan.

Addressing the Chief Ministers conference on the Kargil issue, State Chief Minister Jyoti Basu said while the defence forces should be entrusted in taking strategic decisions to evict the intruders, widening of the conflict would give an undue advantage to Pakistan to secure international intervention.

This, he said, would also erode international support which India enjoyed for exercising its legitimate right to clear the intrusions and defend the Line of Control (LoC).

We are against internationalisation of the Kashmir issue and are of the view that this is a matter which is to be decided between India and Pakistan according to the Simla Agreement, Basu said.

Stating that it would be a welcome step if Pakistan withdrew its troops from the Indian side of LoC, he said However, I wish to caution on certain aspects of the joint (U.S.-Pakistan) statement which should cause serious concern to us in India.

The affirmation by the U.S. President that he will take a personal interest in Indo-Pak relations reflects a de-facto third party intervention on the Kashmir issue, the veteran Marxist leader said. (PTI)

Baruah resigns from JD, likely to join BJP

NEW DELHI, July 7: Senior Janata Dal (JD) leader and former president of the party’s Assam unit Dulal Chandra Baruah today resigned from the primary membership of the party.

Mr Baruah, former president of JD’s North East Regional Coordination Committee, handed his resignation letter Janata Dal president Sharad Yadav.

In his letter, he charged that the recent activities of the party’s top brass had left him in a state of "quandary and dismay.

First of all, the party leadership had shown the least concern for Assam in particular and the North-East in general, which remained ever mired in problems and economic backwardness.

Secondly, dearth of noble ideas and demands of political exigencies led the party to hob-nob with the Congress and also to cultivate persons of doubtful integrity like Ms Jayalalitha.

Thirdly, he said, the party now seems to be in disarry with smaller groups regularly emerging out of it to form new parties.

"Worst of all was the indifferent attitude of the central leadership towards the party’s unit in Assam due to which the party was never able to sufficiently organise itself among the masses, he accused the leadership.

"Such circumstances are wholly detrimental for one who seeks to dedicate himself to public cause."

Mr Baruah said he has resigned to find an alternative and viable political ground to work for the people who currently "live on the brink of an economic, political and social disaster."

Asked about his future plans, the former Assam minister said he was contemplating join was the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) "soon." (UNI)

Ram in support of Indian army

COINBATORE, July 7: Noted journalist N Ram has come out in support of the Indian army and the Government for having decided not to cross the Line of Control (LoC) during Kargil operations.

Addressing a function on "the real Kargil scenario" organised by the Rotary Club of Coimbatore East here yesterday, he said the whole world was appreciating India for not crossing the LoC to fight Pakistani intruders in the Kargil sector.

He said Prime Minister A B Vajpayee had done a good thing by not accepting U S President Bill Clinton’s invitation for a meeting during Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s visit to Washington.

Considering his visit and the joint statement of Mr Clinton and Mr Sharif, there might be a chance of a third party mediation on the Kashmir issue, he said adding that India should not accept it.

Mr Ram, praising the Government’s role in the later stages of Kargil operations, said initially there was a confusion over the issue. There was a failure on part of the Defence Ministry in interpretation and acting on army intelligence.

He said "Pakistan wanted" to utilise the weakness prevailing in our political situation and simultaneously wanted the Kashmir issue to have international focus. (UNI)
