Conversions in Ladakh

Sir,

This has reference to the article LBA to launch agitation against conversions' by B. L. Kak in Daily Excelsior dated 16.1.99. The author seems to be befooling the masses by presenting facts in an exaggerated form. According to him. "800 Buddhist women have been converted to Islam in the past five years" which is totally incorrect. If he is true, then he should have supported its facts and figures as well. Otherwise, the article has a tendency to disturb the communal amity between the two communities.

Unlike other parts of country, the conversions in Ladakh are not due to social in justice, for exchanging or poverty but a deliberate or willing adoption of another religion.

It is right time that every parents educate their children about the importance of their religion and groom their personalities in a manner which may respect each other's religion without using it for any anti-social or anti-national activity.

Commuters' nightmare

Sir,

The matador service on the Parade-Sarwal route is anything but satisfactory. At both the terminuses commuters have to wait and waste time for hours either for the vehicle to appear at the terminus or if it is stationary at the Parade end, the commuters have to sit inside helplessly till the driver feels it his pleasure to get himself seated on the steering, keep the engine on and then feels like starting the vehicle on the supposedly ordous journey, filling the matador to capacity enroute, forcing the helpless commuters to get squeezed to the point of each commuter's half size, particularly when a commuter or two are as bulky as to require two commuters' space. Thus this small journey becomes as difficult as one has to travel thousands of miles. The conductor is there just to ingore this uneasy situation of the commuters being too busy in collecting the fare from the jumbled-together commuters. If any commuters musters courage and questions the conductors, he is off-loaded instantaneously, for, putting a question inconvenient to the conductor is taken as an offence culpable of being thrown out of the vehicle, as this is the punishment this arrogant commuter deserves. This conductor readily accepts defaced and torn out currency notes from one hand and hands that over to another commuter even if the commuter is unwilling to accept such a currency note. Then begins the scuffle between the conductor and the commuter. It has been observed that this conductor keep good conditioned currency notes in his pocket and exchanges the torn out one's between the commuters in which exercise some commuter does not accept the torn out note against a fresh note of higher denomination he pays for his fare expecting the balance back from the conductor.

Thus goes on the story of the commuters on the route, between Parade and Sarwal. A conductor told that eight matadors ply on the route but the commuters do see only two or three doing the job on this route. The others change the route-board and ply on such routes where the number of the commuters is sizeable ostensibly in connivance with the Traffic Police. My numerous letters to the RTO Jammu did yield no response, probably I did not go personally to grease the palm of Department because I have never myself indulged in such nefarious activity while in Government service.

May the Transport Commissioner look into it? This route will be a good public-service-route provided the Sarwal terminus is extended to Paloura via Patoli so that there may be more commuters and the vehicle could ply on the route regularly.

Solidarity with Iraq

Sir,

The world wide denouncement of America -- Britain sponsored bombing of Iraq is commendable. People, cutting across national boundaries termed this an onslaught on Iraq's sovereignty and showed their solidarity with Iraqi people. The effigies of Clinton and Tony Blair were set to fire and the demonstrations turned violent in several countries. Though bulk of American society backed Clinton but the simmering disapproval too, is discernible in sporadic but impressive demonstrations in American streets against him.

This spontaneous outburst against American dictatorship is imparalled and undoubtedly implies that people cannot be hoodwinked for long. The official response though was well-calculated yet several countries exhibited moral and political courage to question the authority of America. China and Russia missed the historical opportunity of daring the bullying of America. Russia's call back Ambassador drama ended in a fiasco, further confirming the fact that it is now a toothless Tiger, groaning out of past habit.

The nationalism demonstrated by Iraqi people is perhaps having few parallels in human history. A whole generation of children is wiped out. Nearly five lakh children have died following acute shortage of medical facilities and nutrition. The economy stands desparately shattered but the will of Iraqi people is invincible.

America has sent a hard hitting message through this invasion that "No country is soverign and no boundary sacred for American missiles". It can hit any country on a flimsy pretext. It is high time for world leaders to think who will be the next target of America. The message has more serious implications for certain nations who dare the dictations of Uncle Sam.

The tiny nation Iraq too, sends a message very unambiguously that even a superpower flanked by its near superpower status friends, armed with modern sophisticated war technology, cannot cow down a single nation if its people are well united, conscious of the nefarious designs of aggressors and are armed with iron like will power.

Eight years of inspection questions the credibility, efficiency and motives of Inspectors. Various investigations have been made into the Iraqi Soil, knowing it well that nuclear and chemical weapons need spacious storing facilities, but still the green signal to uplift sanctions is nowhere in sight.

The blantant sidetracking of United Nations is unprecedented. Mr Kofi Annan went on record to say "it is the saddest day of my life". It remains to be seen if he calls a meeting of General Body and pulls up defiant American and Britain. The official stand of Arab nations, though smacks of communalism, yet proves to be shot in the arm for Iraqi leadership and people.

Though future shrouds in mystery and uncertainty, the carving out of so-called "No fly zones" from Iraqi territory is an attack on Iraqi people's self respect and dignity. The present low key partners of America and Britain are deceptive but certainly Mr Clinton and Tony read and the public opinions written on the walls. They saw the unfavourable winds blowing and had to abruptly cease "operation desert fox" termed by international community as "operation Lewinsky". America fought and lost the war without even a token resistance from Iraq. Its declared aim of toppling or killing Saddam Hussain is still as distant a dream as it was in 1991. Our political leadership must apprise the common man of pressure tactics of superpower. The passage of Patent Bill and go ahead signal to multinationals in Insurance Sector is actually indigestible, keeping in wind pro-Swadeshi stand of ruling party. The nondisclosure of diplomatic US pressure will be detrimental to the political, social and economic health of this nation. The Iraq like transparency is required to win people's confidence who are the greatest asset of a country.
