Depu of JEF meet Director Telecom Excelsior Correspondent DODA, Feb 19: A deputation of employees of tehsil Thathri led by Mr Mohd Sharif Butt, general secretary of Joint Employees Front unit Thathri met Director Telecommunication here today. As per a release, the deputation apprised him about the problems being faced by the people of the area due to non-availability of STD at Thathri. The Director gave patient hearing to their problem and assured them that the Telecommunication Department will soon establish STD in Thathri. The deputation comprised of M S Butt, Raj Kumar, Mohd Saleem Wani, Jaswant Singh, N M Mir, Zakir Hussain Butt and Karam Chand. Meanwhile, a meeting of sweepers working in the district head quarter, Doda was held under the banner of Joint Employees Front. Mr Shabir Ahmed Butt, the president of JEF was the Chief guest in the meeting. Mr Butt highlighted various demands include revision of CA in district Doda, immediate release of 5th Pay Commission arrears, timely disbursement of pay dues to sweepers. He also expressed grave concern over the non-availability of salary allotment in various departments. He appealed to the concerned authorities for immediate release of funds. A body was also formed in the meeting which include Mohd Sharif as president, Ghulam Nabi as general secretary, Pashwar Din as vice-president, Ghulam Ahmed as joint secretary, Mohd Shafi as organiser, Mohd Rafiq as cashier and Munwar Din as member. |

Excelsior Correspondent SRINAGAR, Feb 19: Commercial Broadcasting Service (CBS) Srinagar for its commendable job and in recognition to the excellence shown in sales promotion and marketing abilities, has been awarded the first prize for the year 1998 by the jury constituted by the Prasar Bharti, Directorate General, All India Radio and adjudged the Best CBS Station in the country among 29 commercial station. As per a release, in the short list Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi also figured but their revenue earning graph was far below than Srinagar and also the Srinagars sales promotion effort was considered unique and innovative. Award will be given in Delhi next month. The jury also acclaimed the business promotion tactics adopted by the CBS Srinagar to cross the target given by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting by 300 per cent. This was the third award in succession to CBS Srinagar, it bagged the first prize for the year 1996, second prize for the year 1997 and now first prize for the year 1998. This reward has come at a time when when it is celebrating 25 years of its inception. The CBS staff has acknowledged the contribution made by its esteemed clients, advertising agencies and the staff of Radio Stations without whose cooperation it would not have been possible to celebrate this day. |
HC admits PIL against Internation golf Course Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Feb. 19: Mr Justice G D Sharma of the Jammu Kashmir High Court Jammu wing has admitted a public interest litigation by the Wild Life Protection Society of India, New Delhi against development of a golf course within the area of City Forest, National Park Srinaagr. The court has issued notice to the Chief Engineer Project organisation J&K Govermment, Chief Wild Life Warden of the State and Ministry of Environment and Forests of Union of India returnable within four weeks. The Public Interest Litigation has been filed by Wild Life Protection Society of India through its vice President Ashok Kumar through advocate Raj Panjwani. Mr Gagan Basotra Advocate appeared for the petitioner and alleged that a golf course is being developed constructed within the area of National Park which is in violation of the provision of J&K Wild Life Protection. He also prayed that penal action may also be ordered against the Chief Engineer Projects Organisation for flagrant violation of relevant rules and the law. On these averments the court admitted the petition and issued notice which was accepted by Mr S K Anand for State officials and Mr K L Sharma for Union of India. The case have been listed in the week commencing March 22. The PIL states that the State Government on 22-7-1986 had issued a notification declaring an area of 9.07 Sq. Kms (City forest) to be as a National Park for the purpose of protecting, propagating and developing wild life and its environment. The Chief Engineer Project Organisation communicated his reservations in 1987 on the basis that the area has been earmarked for an International Golf Course. Sometimes in 1998 the Organisation started work on developing the Golf Course which was objected to by the Chief Wild Life Warden. The construction has resulted in extensive degradation of the habitat as has been reported in some newspapers. The petition prayed for preserving the National Park and prosecute the defaulter besides the damage caused to the park, should be paid. |
Evening with difference for Baramulla children Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Feb 19: It was an evening with difference for the students of Baramulla district, on tour to various cities of the country, to have Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah amid them enquiring about their studies, problems of their areas and their future plans. A group of 30 students hailing from various villages of Baramulla district were invited at tea by the Chief Minister who inter-acted with them for half an hour. He urged them to see for themselves the progress made in various fields by the country during past 50 years. The unique venture of taking around the youngsters to various parts of the country has been organised by the Army. The group was flagged off at Sharifabad, Srinagar by Maj Gen Mohinder Puri, GOC, 8 Mountain Division on Tuesday. During their 12 day tour, the students would visit various places of historical and tourist interest in Delhi and Agra. Besides, they will visit various amusement parks, science and art museums and interact with children of other schools in the capital. The children during their stay in the capital would also meet the Prime Minister and the Chief of the Army Staff. The Army has made all arrangements for the trip including transportation, boarding and lodging for the students, mostly belonging to lower strata of society. The venture aims at motivating the impressionable youth of the Valley to join the national mainstream. The tour is designed to broaden their horizons and will expose them to rich cultural and scientific diversity of the country, an army spokesman said. |

HC employees to intensity agitation Excelsior Correspondent SRINAGAR, Feb 19: After observing one hour strike continuously for five days from Feb 15, the High Court staff will proceed on three days mass casual leave from Feb 22. According to press release, to intensity their on-going agitation the agitating employees took this decision against the casual attitude of the State Government towards their demands. The demands include re-organisations scheme of staff and upgradation of private secretaries, readers and assistant registrars of High Court. The staffers have further threatened that if their proposals put forward are not immediately meet by the Government, the staff will be forced to adopt some extreme step. |
Brewing resentment against MBBS, BDS selection list Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Feb 19: There is a brewing resentment against the recently released list of MBBS and BDS by the Competent Authority with some political parties terming it yet another onslaught on Jammu people. Criticising the authencity of the list the Awami National Conference has said has termed it a total discrimination with people of the region which will give rise to regional imbalances in the state. The Party alleged that the Jammu region has again met the disparity and discrimination as the deserving youth have been totally neglected. It said the selection list has also violated the Singhal Commission recommendations where in one member Mr Ram Paul has described the Selection list as fabricated. The Party which termed the selections as a stepmotherly treatment of the Government towards the Jammu region extends full support to the sufferers. The Party leaders including its provincial president Th Ranuq Singh, Messrs Hans Raj Sharma, general secretary, Gian Singh, vice president and Kewal Sharma secretary alleged that this way the National Conference Government was sowing the seeds of disintegration in the state. The Pradesh Youth Congress-I leader and MLA Kalakote, Mr Ashok Kumar Sharma has also taken the State Government to task for alleged bunglings in the combined Entrance examinations. He said one year long drama to befool the people and competitors took another turn when the recent selection list of Combined Entrance examination was published in which the address and other particulars of the selected candidates were not mentioned. Jammu and Kashmir Panthers Party has also expressed its grave resentment over the selection list of MBBS and BDS. The Party held a meeting at Akhnoor today under the leadership of Mr Inderpal Singh and demanded a high level probe into the matter. The Pradesh Youth Congress I has also expressed concern over the recently released the MBBS and BDS list. The Party in a handout issued here today alleged that by giving less than 20 percent representation to students from Jammu Region the N C Government was creating the regional imbalances in the state. The Party has cautioned the people of the State against the discriminative policies of the present Government. Meanwhile the Kashmiri Pandit Sabha Ambphalla has also voiced its concern over the discriminative attitude of the National Conference Government towards the community while making admissions to MBBS, BDS and engineering courses. In a statement issued here today the Sabha alleged that the present popular Government is systamatically trying to cut the roots of the community by denying them the right to education. It said the KPs have been marginalised not in education but also in employment. Model code of conduct for legislators being contemplated Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Feb 18: A model code of conduct for the legislators of Jammu and Kashmir on the pattern of Andhra Pradesh is contemplated to be adopted during the course of ensuing session of the State legislature. This was disclosed by the Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs, Mr PL Handoo while addressing a meeting of the Chief Whips and Whips of various political parties, here today. He said that, the Ministry of Law and Parliamentary Affairs of the State has prepared a draft for the purpose. A copy of the code adopted by the Andhra Pradesh from January this year would be procured and both will be discussed together in threadbare before the adoption of the code. Several decisions were also taken at the meeting for making the functioning of the Chief Whips and Whips more effective. For the purpose, one room with secretarial facilities would be made available to them in the legislature complex during ensuing budget session. The Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister said that the matter regarding providing steno-typists to the legislators in their constituencies through internal arrangement with the local administration will also be considered. The meeting among others was attended by the Chief Whips of various political parties including the Minister of State for Home, Mr Mushtaq Ahmad Lone, (NC), Ch Piara Singh, MLA, (BJP), Mr Jagdish Raj Dubey, MLA, (JD) and Mr Ashok Sharma, MLA, (Congress). The Commissioner/Secretary Law, Mr KA Bhat, Secretary, Legislative Assembly, Mr Mohammad Iqbal Ganai, Secretary, Legislative Council, Mr GR Mehboobi and Deputy Secretary, Law, Mr GH Tantray also attended the meeting. Mr Handoo also addressed a meeting of the Consultative Committee of the Law Department. Several matters pertaining to the Law Department came up for discussion. Umar asks people to participate in polls Excelsior Correspondent SRINAGAR, Feb. 19: Member Parliament, Mr Umar Abdullah has called upon the people to participate in the ensuing Panchayati elections which was imperative for ensuring the socio-economic development at the grass root level. He was addressing big public meetings at Kangan and Gagangeer today. He said people would extend their full cooperation to the State Government so that the fruits of the socio-economic and other welfare schemes sponsored by the Government, reach to the people. Mr Umar Abdullah said that Sonamarg Mounteneering Institute will be shortly set up in the area which would further boost the economy of the local people besides giving fillip to the tourism industry. He said Government was actively considering the proposal for opening of the Bal Tal route for yatries during Amar Nath Ji Yatra. He assured the people of these areas that he will take up the matter of providing foodgrains on concessional rates to the people living below the poverty line with the Minister of State for Food and Supplies. He said that the pending amount due to the Pony-Wallas of these areas will also be taken up with the concerned authorities.
