In all this the people suffered much but it is also a fact of life that the entire nation stood as one man with Jammu and Kashmir in period of turbulence. Peace & Progress The single most problem of economic backwardness has to be addressed earnestly and jointly by the Central and State Governments and above all this by the people themselves of Jammu and Kashmir. The people in the State must begin the new Millennium with a pledge to work relentlessly for peace and harmony for sustained development in all spheres of human activity. 3 APHC leaders appeal for release of IA hostages Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Dec 29: Three APHC leaders, Aga Syed Hassan, Bashir Ahmed Tota and Shaid-ul-Islam, currently lodged in Kot Bhalwal jail in Jammu under PSA, have strongly condemned the hijacking of Indian Airlines Airbus IC 814 from Kathmandu and appealed to the hijackers to release the passengers without any harm and further delay. They have also made appeal in this regard to several world bodies including United Nations and OIC. In a statement they have stated that it is an inhuman act and nobody on this earth will like such acts. This act is un-Islamic and that too in the holy month of Ramzan when Muslims pray for the peace of whole world. The hijacking should have not gone upto this extreme, where they have killed one innocent and injured many others and are now keeping 160 passengers who are totally innocent as hostages. "We will never like such barbaric acts. Therefore, we from this Kote Bhalwal Jail make an appeal to United Nations, OIC, Red Cross, INT and especially hijackers (whom we don't know) but on humanitarian grounds to release the passengers without any harm and further delay and in this way save humanity". |

Nursing students organise
citizens meet, resolve Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Dec 29: In order to intensify its struggle against the alleged malicious propaganda and character assassination campaign launched by a local Jammu based Daily English newspaper, the student Nurses Association of Ancillary Medical Training Institute (AMT), Jammu have resolved to file a defamation suit against the editor of the newspaper. In a citizens meet organised at hotel Premier here today, the students of the AMT school, gained the sympathy from the representatives of various women organisations, women leaders and the prominent citizens. Some leading lawyers among the citizens were also present on the occasion who deliberated in length about the objectionable publications appeared in the State Times against the nursing community. Taking serious note of the one point programme and personal attack on the AMT school, its students and the head, the members observed that the editor of the paper was indulging in the " Yellow Journalism" just to settle personal scores with head of the institution by using his paper for the purpose. While a few members including MLA, Bimla Luthra suggested to talk to the editor of the paper to stop this propaganda and tender apology from the students, yet majority of the citizens favoured to knock the doors of the J&K High Court to provide justice to the students. The members even offered to file Public Interest Litigation against the newspaper Editor, Chief of the Editorial Board, the Executive Editor and the reporter Sidharth. They assured to fight the case even up to the Supreme Court and maintained that it has become essential to keep a check on the increasing trend of Yellow Journalism. President of the Association B K Thakur and vice-president, Bharti alleged that some of the students had gone to the head of the Editorial, Mr V I K Sarin with some clarification but they were allegedly misbehaved and abused by him and a few members. They did not publish the clarification and even carried on their one point programme. She said that the paper has even gone to the extent of sexual exploitation and the relations of some girl students with the ministers and bureaucrats. The paper should identify those students and the VIPs. It has no right or the authority to write whatever come to their head without any proof. Even the constitution of India and the Press Laws do not permit to go in for such highly objectionable publication, she added. One of the girl student expressed that due to the defamatory campaign against the nurses, the engagements of two girls were broken by the boys families. She said it was not fair to malign all the students and such publications have defamed the entire fraternity. For some vested interests, the management has made it as personal issue. Such wrong projections of the facts can only mar the reputation and credibility of any newspaper, she maintained. The students disclosed that they have already written to the Press Council of India and they have sought some clippings and other related documents which are being sent to them in New Delhi. It will not be sufficient for us if the Commission directs only for publishing a written apology in the paper after disposal. A heavy penalty or punishment is essential to check such petty papers and the so called "editors" to indulge in such cheap journalism. It would also be a lesson for the others in future, they added. The prominent citizens who spoke on the occasion and presented their view point on the issue include, Ms Zubeda Salaria & Ms Bimla Luthra, National Conference MLAs, senior Congress leader and former MLA, Ms Suman Bhagat, Congress leader Mr K L Gupta, Mr Tarlochan Singh, some representatives of the women organisations, some members of the Bar and others. The students thanked the citizens for their cooperation, coordination and the guidance for the next course of action. |
