Mahatama towers all leaders of the century
in Shaikh’s painting

NEW DELHI, Dec 28: Well-known Ahmedabad-based artist Mohsin Shaikh is back in town with a millennium painting which portrays Mahatma Gandhi’s overwhelming influence on the century’s leaders including Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King.

The faces of the good people who made a difference in the 20th century have been shown in a green background representing peace and prosperity, with the bespectacled and serene visage of the Father of the Nation’ in a meditational posture on top.

Depicting the darker side are a plethora of leaders led by Feuhrer and followed by dictators such as Idi Amin, Pol Pot and Mussolini.

It is perhaps for the first time that 21 leaders have been painted on a single canvas. As an artist, I wanted to show that Gandhi and his philosophy of truth and non-violence towers above all other leaders of the century, Shaikh said.

Interestingly, Shaikh has included among the good leaders votaries of all ideology including the father of Iran’s Islamic revolution Ayotollah Khomeini, Chinese leader Mao Zedong, former American Presidents John F Kennedy and Roosevelt and Soviet leader Lenin.

Shaikh had earlier presented a painting on the Pokhran nuclear tests to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. His sensational painting on Clinton and Monica’ had raised a hue and cry in the art circles while his paintings on the Kargil conflict was a crowd puller in the Capital. (PTI)

Nation bids tearful farewell to Sharma

NEW DELHI, Dec 28: A grateful nation bid a tearful adieu to former President Dr Shanker Dayal Sharma, who was cremated with full military honours amidst the chanting of vedic hymns here today.

President K R Narayanan, Vice-President Krishan Kant, Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, former President R Venkataraman, former Prime Ministers I K Gujral, Chandrasekhar and V P Singh were among the VVIPs present at the state funeral near Vijay Ghat to pay their last respects to Sharma, who died of cardiac arrest at a city hospital on Sunday night.

The mortal remains of the 81-year old leader, which lay in state since yesterday at his 23, Safdarjung Road residence, was brought on a flower-bedecked gun carriage in a funeral procession escorted by 66 platoons from the Army and three each from the Air Force and Navy, on the front and the rear.

All the mourners including members of the late President’s family and the diplomatic corps stood silently as the body was brought in with the ceremonial band of the Rajputana Rifles marching in slowly playing "Brahmaputra".

Two Lt Generals, a Vice-Admiral and an Air Marshal lend their shoulders to the man, who led the nation during the turbulent years between 1992-97, on his last journey.

As sons Satish Dayal and Ashutosh lit the funeral pyre amidst the chanting of vedic hymns, the ceremonial battery gave a 21-gun salute and jawans sounded the ‘last post’ and the ‘rouse’ after a short interval. A flock of eagles soared high as if to indicate the soul’s final journey to eternity. The Government had yesterday announced a seven day mourning as a mark of respect to the former President.

During the seven day mourning till January 2, 2000, the national flag would be flown at half mast on all Government buildings throughout the country. (PTI)

Thakre warns Pak over plane hijacking

CHENNAI, Dec 28: With the hijacking of the Indian Airlines plane continuing to overshadow the BJP National Council meeting here, party president Kushabhau Thakre warned Pakistan to desist from harbouring any evil intentions on this country and desist from attempts to destabilise India.

Delivering the inaugural address at the two-day meeting of the National Council here, he said you (Pakistan) cannot even dream of attempts to destabilise nor threaten our sovereignty and integrity having been defeated thrice in conflicts, the latest being defeat in Kargil.

Charging Pakistan with being directly involved in the hijacking of the Indian Airlines airbus, he said though Pakistan has denied this we have to be alert against such machinations.

He said even though Pakistan was defeated in Kargil and had to pull back its forces from the Indian side of the Line of Control (LoC), Pakistan has not given up its anti-India designs.

Pakistan continues to sponsor cross-border terrorism and hostile anti-India propoganda and what has added a new dimension to the hostility is the military coup in Pakistan, he said.

Thakre said the developments in Pakistan are not without significance for our national security concerns.

Soon after seizing power, the military rulers of Pakistan allowed terrorist organisations to hold a conference that resulted in cries of Jehad against India. Many of these organisations, especially the Laskhar-e-Toiba, are known to be involved in terrorist activities in India, Thakre said. (PTI)

IMPHAL, Dec 28: Indo-Myanmar Border at Moreh in Manipur has been sealed following erection of an unauthorised fencing at no man’s land by Myanmarese authorities, delayed official reports said today.

The centre has been informed about the developments at the sensitive border town, they added. (PTI)

Punjab asked to pay interim relief in custodial deaths

NEW DELHI, Dec 28: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has asked the Punjab Government to pay interim relief of Rs one lakh in custodial deaths and ordered departmental action against the errant police officials.

The Commission was informed by a Senior Superintendent of Police, Ferozepur that Kartar Singh, arrested on September 29, 1995, died a natural death the next morning in the lock-up at Zira police station, a release from the NHRC today said.

According to an inquiry of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Ferozepur, involvement of police in the death of the victim was ruled out and instead it stated that death had occurred due to excessive intake of narcotic and psychotropic drugs.

The Commission observed the report made no allegation of illtreatment but post-mortem report revealed body injuries. The Commission directed its Director General (investigation) D R Karthikeyan to collect all material factors.

A report of the investigation division of the Commission said Singh was neither tortured nor beaten by the police while doctors stated cause of death as poisoning by zinc phosphide, a pesticide that can kill within 24 hours of consumption.

The Commission felt Singh took the poison before or around the time of arrest and said that had prompt action and medical help been arranged, he may have survived.

The circumstances brought on record, to say the least, are indicative of negligence on part of the police officials concerned to arrange for timely medical aid, the Commission observed. (PTI)

Differences crop up at BJP National Council meeting

CHENNAI, Dec 28: Differences cropped up in the BJP National Council meeting here today on the proposals for restricting the tenure of party president to a single three-year term and a mechanism for better coordination between the party and the Government.

The proposals are contained in the report submitted by a 10-member committee headed by BJP senior vice president Jana Krishnamurthy to suggest amendments to the party constitution.

The committee recommended a single three-year term for the party president against the existing provision in the constitution for two consecutive terms of two-year each.

However, when the issue came up for discussion today at the council, some of its members favoured the presidential tenure of two consecutive terms of three years each.

Another contentious issue was the setting up of a body to ensure effective coordination between the party and the Government.

Some members disfavoured the setting up of an eight-member Central Advisory Council for the purpose arguing it would become a super power body undermining the authority of BJP Central Parliamentary Board and the national executive.

A reduction in the membership fee was also suggested by some members who wanted it to be cut down from Rs 250 to Rs 100-150. (PTI)

Take nation into new century of new resolve: Modi

CHENNAI, Dec 28: BJP general secretary Narendra Modi today asked the party cadre to adhere to four H’s- heritage, harmony, human face and happiness.

Initiating a discussion on the Chennai declaration, he stressed the need for taking the country to a new century of new resolve - Nayi Shatabdi-Naya Sankalp.

He criticised the Congress that ruled for over four decades and said things which should not have happened, happened and those which should have happened, did not happen. Corruption became the order of the day during congress rule and many non-Congress Governments were toppled by the Congress regime.

Politics which was a mission at the time of independence, later became an ambition, he said, adding that only good people Should come to political arena in the new century and a great responsibility rested on the younger generation. Politics is not dirty but people have made it dirty, he said.

Modi said there was a time when parties like the Akali Dal and Shiv Sena were treated as untouchables. These parties had now joined the mainstream after aligning with the BJP. These parties are now functioning shoulder to shoulder with us, he said.

Referring to criticism that Prime Minister A B Vajpayee and Home Minister L K Advani were not seeing eye to eye on several issues, he said these are the only two tall leaders who are together in politics for the past four decades, a factor which was never witnessed even during Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s times.

The Chennai declaration, he said, should be taken to every citizen even in villages as a ‘catalytic agent’ for realising the party’s resolve for the new century. (PTI)
