Gen Kanwar for vigil to fight proxy war by Pak

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, Dec 21: Major General H S Kanwar, Chief of Staff of Nagrota Corps has called for more vigil and determination to fight the proxy war by Pakistan, who did not dare to face the strong Indian Army.

Addressing at the passing out parade of 203 recruits at the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Rect Training Camp at Dhansal about 35 kms from here today, the General said that through infiltration Pakistan started this type of proxy war to avoid their defeat. He said Pak evil designs will not be allowed to succeed and was taught a good lesson in Kargil operation by the Indian Army.

He told the new entrants that they are joining one of the strongest Army in the world and the best Regiment of the Indian Army, the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment. He called upon them to shoulder their responsibilities with dedication and discipline to raise the name of their regiment and the Indian Army as a whose which has been recognised as on the top by the people of the country in reposing confidence in them.

Earlier, Major General Kanwar reviewed the passing out parade and took the salute at the march past.

He also awarded medals to three recruits for their best performance. Rect Harman Singh was given Rinchin Medal for best in firing while Rect Resham Singh was awarded Rana Singh Medal for best in drill and Rect Dheeraj Kumar received Maqbool Sherwani Medal for best in PT.

While narrating the achievements of the JAKLI regiment, Colonel R K Singh, Commandant of the JAKLI Recruiting Training Camp said that the regiment has earned four Battle Honours, one Param Vir Chakra by Sub Major Bana Singh, who also graced the occasion, MVC-II, VrC-39, Shaurya Chakra 6, Jeevan Raksha Padhik-3, Sena Medals-83, PVSM-one, AVSM-Five, VSM-six, UYSM-one, Commendation Cards-220 and Mention-in-Despatches.

For its distinguished service in all theaters of operations in the country and service abroad the President of India has conferred twelve colours to the Regiment in Oct 98.

The partition of 1947 was followed by the invasion of the State of Jammu and Kashmir by Pakistan in the vain hope of over running the State on the basis of communal affiliations. The people of Jammu and Kashmir, in unison, rose to defend their motherland and the self defence bodies thus formed in Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh region were reorganised into J&K Militia which has now evolved into the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry.

The Regiment draws its recruits exclusively from the State of Jammu and Kashmir with a balanced representation of all regions and communities. The amity and brotherhood within the Regiment is symbolised in the synthesis of the Mandir, Masjid and Gurudwara where irrespective of personal faith the best example of "Kashmiriyat" is evident.

The nationalistic and patriotic feelings expressed by people of Jammu and Kashmir against the separatist view projected by the national media is best exposed by the class composition of the Regiment. This can also be seen in the composition of the passing out course where out of 203 recruits, 129 are from Jammu/Doda region, 74 from Kashmir valley.

The willingness and eagerness of the people on the frontiers of the Kashmir valley to join the national mainstream is exemplified in the representation of small pockets of population in the Regiment.

Passing out parade today is the culmination of rigorous training that goes towards making a soldier out of a raw Rect. After due verification of his antecedents he will be attested and thereafter considered a full fledged soldier of the Indian Army.

The new loc for JAK LI Regiment Centre is coming up in Srinagar which when completed will be the biggest and most modern centre in India. Presently, due to lack of trg infrastructure, the training battalion has to perforce move down to Dhansal in the winter months so that the training of recruits is not affected by the extreme cold climate in the Valley.
