New Zealand on top in first test HAMILTON, NEW ZEALAND, Dec 19: New Zealand continued its remarkable comeback in the first cricket test against the West Indies by claiming four wickets in the opening session on day four today. But rain allowed just 16 minutes after the break before play was abandoned. An extra hour will be added tomorrow morning with New Zealand well placed. The Windies made a perfect start to the test, getting to 282 for one on the opening day, but it has been all new Zealand ever since. After bowling the tourists out for 365 the Kiwis replied with 393 as Chris Cairns led the way with 72. Cairns continued his fine match today by grabbing the first two wickets as the Windies slumped to 62 for four at lunch, a lead of just 34. Cairns bowled first innings century maker Sherwin Campbell for a duck and followed up by getting Shivnarine Chanderpaul caught behind for another duck soon after. Both wickets fell without a run on the board and more was to come. Dion Nash got the prize scalp of Brian Lara, caught behind for one, with the total on three before Adrian Griffith and Ricardo Powell took the tally to 36. Daniel Vettori then removed the dangerous powell for 30. Griffith faced 76 balls for his 11 runs to lunch while Jimmy Adams was not out 13. They both moved to 14 before persistent rain moved in to help the Windies keep defeat at bay. Cairns had 2-11 off 11 overs including five maidens. (AP) |

156- run lead HOBART, Dec 19: Indian bowlers were denied an opportunity to get into form ahead of the second test against Australia as they were ground into the dust by the Tasmanians, who reached a strong 472 for four on the penultimate day of the four-day cricket match here today. By close, Tasmania had built a 156-run lead on the visitors 316 for nine declared, with Dan Marsh unconquered on 118 and Shaun Young on 32. Home skipper Jamie Cox and Marsh led the pounding of the Indian attack, knocking up centuries on an easy bellerive oval wicket that saw 306 runs being scored during the day. Resuming at 166 for no loss, the opening pair of Cox and Deanne Hills put on 205 for the first wicket before hills was beaten by VVS Laxman throw to the bowlers end while attempting to steal a sharp single. He made 84. It was the fifth double century stand and the 21st of hundred or more between the two established openers. India gained another success in the first session when Michael Divenuto edged a catch behind to Nayan Mongia off Vijay Bharadwaj after making 12. But Cox batted strongly and, with John Dykes, raised 50 runs for the third wicket. Coxs dominating innings ended when he heaved a catch to Venkatesh Prasad at mid-on off stand-in skipper Sourav Ganguly. He batted for 400 minutes and 278 balls, hitting 13 fours. After the 300 of the innings came up off 621 balls, the runs started coming in faster, thanks to Marsh. The stocky batsman, son of former Australian stumper Rodney Marsh, drove, pulled and hoisted Indian bowlers to all parts of the ground to raise his third hundred in four first class games. Marsh batted for 188 minutes, hitting eight fours and a six off the 123 balls he faced. The fourth success of the day for the Indians came in the post-tea session when Bharadwaj won a leg-before appeal against John Dykes. The batsman made 61 runs, completing his half century in 142 minutes and 110 balls with six fours before he missed a straight delivery. Dykes had put on 104 runs for the fourth wicket with Marsh. The Indian attack was not helped by a sleeping pitch on which the bowlers bowled as well as the conditions permitted. Coach Kapil Dev defended his bowlers insipid display and instead criticised the route the tourists were following on the current tour, AFP adds. I cant understand why we were made to play this game in Hobart, Kapil said. Its cold here and the wicket is flat, very different from what we will get in the second test in Melbourne. There was little the bowlers could do. It was not easy to take wickets, he said. (PTI) |

Squash Tourney MUMBAI, Dec 19: Vishal Kapoor of H R College, bagged the boys under-17 title with a fluent 9-3, 9-3, 9-7 victory over Sahil Vora of Cathedral and John Connon in the 3rd leg of the Air India-Sram Junior Squash Tournament at the Cricket Club of India on Sunday. It was another memoriable day for the Kapoors as Vishals brother Mihir, also of H R College, triumphed in the under-19 category with a 9-2, 9-6, 9-5 win over Faran Machra. Sahil Vora struggled to find the form which got him through to the final. He committed unforced errors too early in the opening game to allow Vishal a comfortable 8-2 lead. With Vora still unsettled Vishal quickly surged to a 1-0 advantage. The situation did not improve for Vora in the second game. Vishal returned every stroke with quiet determination as Vora seemed to run out of ideas. A couple of nicks early in the crucial third game helped Vora come back into the match for a brief moment. But Vishal continued to apply pressure with aggressive play and took an 8-2 lead. It all seemed over for Vora but Vishal hit the tin for his rival to close in at 5-8. A couple of brilliant forehand strokes by Vora saw him further narrow the margin at 7-8 and a keen contest lay in store. But Vishal earned his service back at that crucial moment and unleashed a fierce forehand winner to clinch the game and the match. Deepali Anwekar and Alisha Mashruwalla continued their domination among the girls by winning the under-19 and under-15 titles respectively. Deepali beat Priyanka Yadav 9-2, 9-5, 9-2, while Alisha beat Natashe Fall 9-4, 9-1, 9-5. Similarly, Vikram Malhotra of Maneckji Cooper held sway in the boys under-11 category with a comfortable 9-0, 9-4, 9-3 triumph over arch rival Vir Seth of Cathedral and John Connon. Virs brother Nikhil too was not so lucky as he conceded a walk over to Sandeep Jangra of Jindal. Vikas Jangra also of Jindal overcame opening game hiccups to claim the boys under -15 crown after a 10-9, 9-2, 9-3 victory over a determined Rishabh Singhvi. Hrh prince Tunku Imram, president of the Malaysian Cricket Association was the chief guest and gave away the prizes. (UNI) |
Churchill brothers to clash with FC Kochin today MARGAO, Dec 19: Churchill brothers would be looking to score their third straight win when they lock horns with F C Kochin in the fourth edition of the National Football League tomorrow. Goa league champions Churchill playing the second match on home ground hold advantage over their rival mentally as they beat them 4-0 in Rovers Cup. Their performance against Dempo (5-0) and Mahindra (2-0) has fetched six points. Churchill has a compact team with good bench strength. Recruitment of two players from Ukraine, Mykola Shevchenko (sweeper) and Andril Malchevky (striker), has added strength in the defence and upfront and coach Danny McLennan has plenty of option in the starting line up for tomorrows clash at the Nehru stadium, Fatorda. Striker Francis Silveira, the leading scorer with five goals from two matches, is in brilliant form and the rival defence led by Dhanesh, Mahesh Gawli, Safique and Feroz will have a sleepless night thinking how to keep him at bay. Silveira will be assited by Malchevky, who did not have a good match against Mahindras. Churchills mainstay in defence, Osumanu Hussien, who has a thigh injury, is a doubtful, but the coach is not worried as newcomer Shevchenko, who had a good time against Mahindra, would play in his position as stooper back. Kochin, the first professional club of India who stood sixth last year in national league, started this season on a sour note with a series of debacle where they lost to Churchill 0-4 in Rovers Cup and 0-1 against Salgaocar in the Durand Cup prompting coach Bharatan to resign.
