DG Medical Servic vists Commandant Hospital Excelsior Correspondent UDHAMPUR, Aug 14: Lt Gen SC Verma, the Director General Medical Service (Army) and Colonel Commandant of the Army Medical Corps was on a two day visit to the Headquarters of the Northern Command. He visited the Command Hospital and other medical units in the station. The General had been posted here as a senior advisor in opthalmology so he is not new to the area and for him it was like a home coming. He spoke to the Junior Commissioned Officer and Jawans at a Special Sainik Sammelan organised at the Command Hospital and complim-ented the para medical staff for their performance during the OP Vijay. He conveyed the appreciation of the COAS and civil dignatories including the Prime Minister, Defence Minister and Home Minister. Speaking to the men, he informed that as against the existing 35 per cent married accommodation the authorisation would be 100 per cent the essential category so that the level of satisfaction and efficiency is enhanced. He said that a provision was being made to give compensation in lieu of quarters to trainees. The criteria for non technical commission was being rationalised so that the existing deficiency of the cadre is completed. He encouraged the rank and file to avail of study leave and enhance their professional acumen. This would go a long way in improving the quality of paramedical care in the hospitals. The DG informed that the existing nomenclature of certain trades in the AMC was being revised to designations at par with their equivalant trade in the civil hospitals. This would facilitate rehabilitation after retirement. While interacting with the officers he said that the technical upgradation of existing facilities with sophisticated equipment was on the cards and the regional refral centres in the Northern Command would compare with the best in the country in a time bound and phased manner. Air conditioned ambulances are being introduced into service shortly he added. He apprised the doctors that they could refer a patient for treatment to any civil hospital on India where the appropriate facilities are available at Government expense. After a detailed discussion with Maj Gen R Jaitly the Deputy Director of Medical Services in the Northern Command and after meeting the other appointments in the Headquarters he left for his headquarters at Delhi. |

Excelsior Correspondent UDHAMPUR, Aug 14: On the eve of Independence day the 50th Van Mahotsava was organised by the Social Forestry Department in collaboration with the New Era Eco-Club of Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1 Udhampur in the Vidyalaya premises. Mr Syed Mehboob Iqbal (KAS) District Development Commissioner District Udhampur was the chief guest. He inaugurated the function by planting a sappling, Lt Col Bimal Sarkar presided over the function. Students, teachers, the DFO and other dignatories present each planted a tree. Thereafter the Vidyalaya students presented a cultural show and presented their views on the bio degradation ecology and enviornment. A vote of thanks was proposed by Shri R C Dharmalasani, the Principal of the Vidyalaya to conclude the function. |

Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Aug 14: As a part of Tri-centenary celebrations of birth of Khalsa Panth, the Minister of State for Food and Supplies, Mr Ajay Sadhotra, inaugurated a massive plantation drive at village Simbal in R S Pura tehsil of Jammu district today. The plantation drive has jointly been sponsored by the J&K Rural Sports Club and the Social Forestry Department. On the occasion Mr, Sadhotra paid glowing tributes to the martyrs of the country who sacrificed their lives for defending the integrity and freedom of the mother land. Referring to the birth of Khalsa at Anandpora Sahib in 1699 AD, the Minister said that the message of brotherhood, secularism, peaceful co-existence, national integration, honourable living and patriotism disseminated by Guru ji Maharaj is a key to peace, tranquility and independence in the country. S Harbans Singh MLC who was also present called upon the people especially younger generation to act upon the principles given by great Gurus to usher, an era of peace and prosperity in the society. He said that great Gurus have taught us a lesson of dedicated service to society honest living and remembering his name. Referring to importance of plantations, Mr Singh appealed all the voluntary organisations to plant maximum sapling in their respective areas. The president of Rural Sports Club, Mr Narinder Singh said that the club has launched a vigorous campaign against social evils. He said that during the current monsoon, a target of planting about 50,000 saplings of various species has been fixed. Priority has been accorded to bring public places, cremation grounds, vacant lands, road sides and arid areas under the plantation. He also gave a brief resume of the activities of the club. |
Building centre management holds meeting Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Aug 14: A meeting of the Board of Management of Building Centre, Jammu to suggest ways and means to gear up its acivities and to popularise the cost effective in building material in the State was held here today. The Housing and Urban Development Minister, Moulvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari who is also the Chairman of the Board of Management of Building Centre, Jammu presided. The meeting was apprised that a comprehensive mass compaign to popularise the cost effective building technology among the masses would be undertaken through print and electronic media. The Government departments should place order for purchase of building material from the Building Centre for construction purposes. Adequate stock would be provided to the Building Centre to make it fully functional. Speaking on the occasion the Minister stressed the need for popularising the cost effective building materials among the people. He asked the concerned officers to organise demonstration camps of the low cost building technology to attract and motivate people towards the cheaper building material. The meeting was informed that building centres at district levels would also be made functional to popularise cost efective building technology among the masses. The HUDCO would organise seminars to make the building centres more effective and functional. RKJ organises musical concert on I-D eve Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Aug 14: A lively musical concert was organised by Radio Kashmir Jammu (RKJ) at Abhinav Theatre here on the eve of the Independence Day. The concert which started on a somber note, was later stimulated by top Punjabi singer Barkat Sidhu who rendered famous Punjabi numbers. The other singers later followed the suit. The jam packed hall was seen brimming with the activity when the audience joined the singer like Shah Hussain Kaifi on the number Rabba Mera Hal Da. Earlier ,the concert started with a patriotic song in Dogri dedicated to the Kargil martyrs. Various local artists also presented the Dogri folk and prayed their homage to the martyrs through their songs. Vijay Malla, Archana Jalali, Anita Sharma, Upma Sharma , Raman Singh, Nirbhay Singh, Pawnesh Singh and Rakesh Singh Manhas were some of the local artists who took part in the musical concert. On the occasion, Himachal folk dance was also presented by the artists. The show was anchored by RKJs announcer of repute Mrs Madhvi Sharma . Excelsior Corespondent JAMMU, Aug 14: Indian Youth Congress President, Mr Manish Tewari has approved the reconstitution of Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Youth Congress Committee, as proposed by Mr Yogesh Sawhney,State YC President. While Mr Mohd Amin Bhat will be the president for Kashmir province, Mr Gurmeet Singh has been elected as Senior Vice President, a press statement said. Messrs G H Khan, Ashok Sharma and Arvinder Singh were elected as vice presidents. Messrs Ashwani Puri, Nazir Ahmad, H S Sidhu, Neema Stanzin and Mehraj Din Zargar were elected as vice president cum spokesperson. Eight general secretaries were also elected. They include A M Paddar, H C Sharma, G R Khandey, Raj Kumar, Babul Gupta, Khalid Salim, Manmohan Singh and Tirath Ram. Mr Surinder Gupta has been elected as treasurer. The Pradesh Youth Congress will have 13 secretaries. They are Javed Ahmad, Vinay Verma, Baljit Singh, G M Lone, Noiney Wangchuck, Anam Choudhary, Afzal Khandey, Tariq Sheikh, Vijay Padha, Ravinder Slathia, Chattar Saini and Darshan Mehra , the release added. |
3 attempt suicide Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Aug 14: One person was killed while as eight others were injured in different road accidents while as three persons including two women made an abortive attempt to end their lives in separate incidents during the past 24 hours. According to police reports, a youth identified as Randheer Singh (SPO) son of Khajuroo Singh of village Khour was killed when his motorcycle was hit by negligently driven truck at Akhnoor. Some passers-by immediately rushed to the spot of accident and shifted the injured to Government Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Police have registered a case in this connection and seized the truck. The driver of the truck was also arrested on charge of negligent and rash driving. Meanwhile, a truck driver was critically injured when his truck skidded off the road and turned turtle at village Digdool of Doda district late last night. Police said the driver was under the influence of liquor when the accident occurred. He was shifted to Doda Hospital where doctors referred him to GMC Hospital, Jammu in view of his deterioating condition. Doctors attending him stated their condition as critical. He has been identified as Bhajan Singh son of Gopal Singh of Mahore. In another accident, two persons including a teen-ager sustained serious injures when their Tata Sumo was hit by fast-moving non-civilian vehicle at Bari Brahamana here this afternoon. The injured were rushed to hospital and admitted. Their condition was stated to be improving. They have been identified as Yog Raj son of Kasturi Lal of Rajpura and his daughter Garjee Sharma. A case has been registered a case in this connection and started investigation to nab the absconding driver. Three more persons were injured in different road accidents reported from the various parts of Jammu province. They were shifted to hospital and admitted. They have been identified as Bachan son of Atha Mohd of Gujjar Nagar, Mohd Azaz son of Mohd Afzal of Prem Nagar, Jammu and Rakesh Kumar son of Prem Nath of Sidhra. In a bid to end their lives, three persons were consumed some poisonous substance at their residence in separate incidents. Identified as Sheela Devi wife of Sain Dass of Parmandal, Sanjeev Kumar son of Behari lal of Kot Bhalwal and Kasturi Devi wife of Khajan Chand of Bishnah were shifted to hospital when spotted unconscious by family members. Doctors attending them immediately washed their stomach and provided them superficial treatment. Their condition was stated to be improving till the last report came in. The cause behind this extreme step is yet to be ascertained. |
Labour Union discusses problems of employees Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Aug 14: A meeting of J&K State Central Labour Union and its affiliated units was held under the chairmanship of its provincial president Mr Shiv Sharan Sharma here today to discuss the various problems related to public sector employees. While addressing the meeting, Mr Sharma appealed to the State Government to release the salaries of Government, public sector employees at earliest so that they would not suffer more. He also demanded release of COLA besides payment of the pending installments of 5th Pay Commission before the Raksha Bandhan festival. He appealed to the employees to render full support to the National Conference party during the parliamentary elections being held shortly. In the meeting, Mr Dileep Lovana and Ajit Singh Adyal, president and general secretary of J&K SRTC (SCLU) expressed full faith under the dynamic leadership of Mr Masood Andrabi, state president SCLU and Mr Shiv Sharan Sharma, provincial president of SCLU and assured them full support. Mr Sudershan Sharma, president Jammu Joint Workers federation made a hard demand for the construction of labour sarai, dispensary, bathroom and laterine at Ware House and Bus Stand, Jammu. Cultural programmes mark Independence Day evening Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Aug 14: On the eve of the Independence Day various functions were organised today to mark the occasion. Independence Day was celebrated with great pomp and show at the Army Preparatory School, Udhampur. Brig T S Chouhan was the guest of honour. A variety cultural heritage was presented to the parents and guests by the tiny tots. This programme was charged with patriotic fervor. Brig T S Chouhan wished all present a happy Independence Day. He complimented Dr (Mrs) Archana Kalra, the Principal and the staff and students for the excellent performance. He said that the standard clearly reflected the dedication of the staff and the interest of the parents. Mrs Kunti Chouhan distributed the incentive gifts to the participants at the conclusion of the function. A function on the eve of Independence Day was held at Jagriti Balwadi Sangam premises opposite Dewan Mandir, G P O Road. More than 200 tiny-tots of the Balwadi displayed various patriotic items on the occasion. Mrs Susheela Sharma, chairperson of the Jagriti Balwadi Sangam was the chief guest. Children painted the national flag. Students of May Fair Academy celebrated Independence Day today with enthusiasm. Students organised a little but beautiful function of cultural programme in the premises of school. Chairperson of School, Mr V K Nanda presided over the function. A function was also held at Shiva Public School in connection with the Independence Day. A colourful cultural was organised in this connection. Principal of the School, Mrs Sudarshan Kumari, presided over the function and Mr Sunil Dimple, was the chief guest on the occasion. Gupta blames Cong for violence Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Aug 14: Former Member Parliament and BJP nominee for Udhampur Parliamentary constituency, Prof Chaman Lal Gupta accused the Congress and its fellow travellers of being responsible for communal, regional and other tensions prevailing in the country. According to a press release, Prof Gupta was addressing a public meeting at Jasrotah, 70 kms from here in connection with his election campaign. Prof Gupta claimed that the Vajpayee Government at Centre despite difficulties have played historical role in sorting out many problems confronting the nation. "Congress and fellow travellers hatched conspiracy to pull down this Government as they were afraid of their doom in the success of Vajpayee", he said and alleged that by doing so the conspirators have committed the crime of imposing big burden of another untimely elections over the country. Listing achievements of the Vajpayee Government, Prof Gupta said in short span of just 15 months beside braving all misnomored and malicious propaganda, the BJP led Government has restored communal harmony and sorted out 50 years old tension between Tamil Nadu and Karnatka over the issue of Kaveri Water. He described the Lahore Bus Yatra of Prime Minister, Mr Vajpayee as a historic step in bid to have friendly relations. Referring to the problems of the State, he pointed out that it was Congress leadership which accepted two nation theory of Jinnah, ignoring all their commitments of secularism. Referring to the regional discrimination against Jammu and Ladakh, BJP leader said that while the Jammu was having greater number of voters and almost double of the area but Jammu has been provided just two Lok Sabha seats. HWEP organises national integration camp Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Aug 14: National Integration Day celebrated in the premises of the Industrial Training Institute, Hiranagar. The function was organised by Hiranagar Welfare Extension Project, Border Area. According to a press release, Mr Chanker Singh father of Kargil martyr Lakhwinder Singh presided over the function which started with vandana followed by lightening of the lamp by the president. Welcoming the audience, chairperson of the project, Dr K Walli emphasised on the need of unity and brotherhood for the overall development of the country. Patriotic songs were sung by the craft trainees, employees of the project as also by the students of the Higher Secondary Hiranagar. Patriotism virtually gripped the audience when craft trainees employees led by the chief organiser, Mrs Jyotika presented famous patriotic song "Aia meray wattan ke logo". Principal of the Higher Secondary School, Mr B L Kachroo highlighted supreme sacrifices of the soldiers at Kargil, Batalik and Drass sectors during Operation Vijay. Mr Rajkumar recited a Dogri poem on national integration while Tehsildar settlement emphasised the need to eradicate castism from the society. Paying tributes to Kargil martyrs including his own son, Mr Chankar Singh asked the youth to get inspiration from the martyrdom of martyrs. Some money was also collected in the function to donate the same to the families of the Kargil martyrs. |
