Tyson won’t fight ‘anytime soon’

NEW YORK, Apr 27: Mike Tyson will not decide on his boxing future until after his release from a maryland jail.

He must still serve 60 days for violating probation for a 1992 rape conviction in Indiana and the earliest he can get out is in June.

"After Mike’s release we will sit down and discuss his boxing future," Finkel said.

Tyson’s last fight was January. 16, when he knocked out Francois Botha in the fifth round of a fight in Las Vegas. (AP)

Pak team leaves with hopes high

ISLAMABAD, Apr 27: We are on song, the morale is high and every player is looking forward to contribute his best in the World Cup, Skipper Wasim Akram said as Pakistan team left without coach Javed Miandad for England today.

Akram, who played a crucial role in Pakistan’s World Cup triumph in 1992 and vindicated the selectors’ faith in him with successes after being given the reins again late last year, vowed to do well in the mega event to regain the cup.

But the crisis-ridden team, which rallied superbly after plumbing the depths with defeats at home and away to win the first-ever Asian Test championship and two recent triangular tournaments in India and Sharjah, will be without the services of the man behind the show, the six World Cup veteran - Miandad.

Miandad resigned controversially last week citing personal reasons amidst reports of a rift between him and the players.

His resignation has yet to be accepted. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Khalid Mahmood said the matter would be placed before the Board’s council meeting on May 1.

Chances of Miandad joining the team later were, however, minimal despite the issue being raised in front of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif at a reception hosted for the team.

Admitting that differences between him and the players existed, the former batsman said he would reconsider his decision if PCB got the players to reconcile.(PTI)

Stoltenberg, Chang win first-round matches

DULUTH, (GEORGIA) Apr 27: Michael Chang took a step toward extending his eleven-year streak of winning at least one singles title, the longest currently on the ATP tour and fourth in tour history.

In a first-round match last night in the AT-and-T challenge, the fourth-seeded American beat Gianluca Pozzi of Italy 6-4, 6-2.

"Anytime you’ve had success somewhere, it’s always good to come back," said Chang, who won consecutive AT-and-T titles in 1994-95.

"Atlanta is such a great tennis town, so that makes it even better. The people always come out and give great support."

Second-seeded Jason Stoltenberg of Australia beat American Paul Goldstein 6-4, 6-1 in an afternoon match in the clay-court event at the Atlanta Athletic Club.

Chang’s six-year run of finishing no worse than sixth on the ATP tour ended when he closed 1998 at No. 29. A sprained ligament in his left knee and a left wrist injury plagued chang for most of the year, but he still managed victories in Boston and Shanghai after getting hurt.

This year, despite a No. 43 ranking, chang feels in great shape physically, but has won only eight of 16 matches and has reached the semifinals only once - at San Jose, California, in February.

"The best way for me to get better and regain confidence is to play tennis," Chang said. "Unfortunately for me, I’ve either lost early or haven’t been really happy with the way I’ve played."

Stoltenberg, ranked 32nd, used his big serve to dominate. After a relatively close first set, the 1998 AT-and-T runner-up took a 5-0 lead in the second set before Goldstein won a love game.

Czech Petr Korda continued a frustrating year by losing 7-5, 6-1 to Uraguay’s Marcelo Filippini. Korda, who escaped a suspension from the ITF despite testing positive for steroids at Wimbledon last year, won the first game of the second set, then fell apart.

"I lost the desire to play tennis for a while," Korda said.

"It’s still very important to me - definitely not as important as my family - but something I definitely want to do well."

Filippini won the AT-and-T in 1997 - his only American victory and his fifth worldwide.

In other first-round matches, Sweden’s Magnus Larsson beat Belhium’s Johan Van Herck 6-3, 6-2, and Armenia’s Sargis Sargsian stopped American Chris Woodruff 6-4, 6-4. (AP)
