Jemima’s marriage heads to rocks as Imran Khan
meets old flame

LONDON, Oct 20:

Efforts to bring reconciliation between Pakistani star cricketer-turned politician Imran Khan and his estranged wife Jemima have failed and their marriage is now on the verge of collapse, British tabloid reports said.

Serious differences between the couple, once darling of London social scene, cropped up after Khan’s reported meeting with his six-year-old Lovechild from an affair with another socialite Sita White, the reports said.

Imran had previously disowned having fathered the girl during a court hearing.

The former Pakistani cricket captain stormed out of his London home after a bitter row with Jemima, when she refused to accompany him to the US on a fundraising tour for his cancer hospital, newspapers said.

Jemima had pleaded with Khan not to visit the US and be here to repair their troubled marriage, The Sun said.

The media has speculated that Jemima (23) and Khan (46) were living under intense pressures due to big age difference and clash of cultures.

The observer said Jemima, four months pregnant with their second child, reportedly broke down when asked about Khan’s storming out of home and their marital rift.

Media reports said that the rift had widened after Jemima had seen reports of her husband meeting his old flame and his lovechild. (PTI)

Symonds called into Australian team

SYDNEY, Oct 20:

Hard-hitting youngster Andrew Symonds has been called up for Australia’s cricket team for the ICC’s Mini-World Cup event at Bangladesh.

The former Gloucestershire star, who chose Australia over England at the end of 1996, replaces injured Tom Moody. Moody suffered a knee injury last week.

Symonds scored four Sheffield Shield centuries last season after previously failing to live up to his promise in the competition. He is an aggressive batsman and once hit a record number of sixes for Gloucestershire.

Symonds, who plays Sheffield Shield cricket for Queensland, was selected to tour Pakistan with England a but declined the opportunity in order to make a bid for Australian selection.

After being chosen for several Australia a matches, this is his first call up to the top limited overs side.

The ICC Trophy competition starts this weekend but Australia’s first match will be played on Oct 28 following the third test against Pakistan. (AP)

Grand Prix Tennis Tourney
Siemerink, Costa crash out in first round

LYON, Oct 20:

Albert Costa of Spain and the Netherlands’ Jan Siemerink, two seeded players, suffered shock defeats on the first day of the high-profile Lyon Grand Prix Tennis Tournament.

Costa, the world No. 16 and sixth seed here, was beaten by 19-year-old Frenchman Arnaud Di Pasquale, 7-5, 6-3 yesterday.

"Beating a top 50 player is my ambition for the year so I am delighted with the result," Di Pasquale said after the match. "I am not too well-known and perhaps I was underestimated, which worked to my advantage."

After taking the first set 7-5, Di Pasquale broke Costa’s serve to go 4-2 ahead in the second set after a Costa double fault.

Di Pasquale was full of confidence and served two aces - one a second serve - in the final game to win in just one hour, 18 minutes.

No. 5 seed Siemerink was beaten by veteran Italian Gianluca Pozzi in three sets.

Dutchman Siemerink, who recently won the Toulouse Open, seemed on course for victory after coasting through the first set, 6-2.

But a resurgent Pozzi, ranked 58 in the world — 43 places below Siemerink — quickly improved his first serve and put the No. 5 seed under pressure with a series of fine forehand returns.

After winning the second set 6-4, Pozzi won a vital service break in the third game of the final set and broke again to go 4-1 ahead.

Siemerink broke back immediately and, at 4-3, had a chance to go level with the score at 0-30.

But the 33-year-old Italian hit a stunning forehand to get back into the game and ran out a comfortable winner against a dejected Siemerink.

French No. 1 Cedric Pioline, a two-time lyon finalist, was the only seeded player to win Monday, winning a tough match against countryman Sebastien Grosjean 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-1 in two hours 12 minutes.

France’s Nicolas escude had little trouble qualifying for round two, overcoming Spain’s Juan Antonio Marin 6-0, 6-4 in less than an hour.

In a match between two promising 20-year-olds, Germany’s Tommy Haas beat Arnaud Clement of France 6-2, 6-7 (7-9), 6-4.

For the first time, the world’s top three players are at the 750,000 dollars Lyon Grand Prix ATP Tournament.

In the first round, world No. 1 Pete Sampras plays fellow American Todd Martin, while No. 2 Patrick Rafter and No. 3 Marcelo Rios also face US opposition.

Rafter takes on Steve Campbell, while rios plays Jeff Tarango. (AP)

‘Myke Tyson will get another boxing license’

NEW YORK, Oct 20:

A man he once fought and a promoter he is fighting expressed satisfaction that Mike Tyson will get another boxing license.

"It’s about time they gave the man’s license back," said Larry Holmes, who came out of retirement to get knocked out by Tyson in a title bid on January 22, 1988. "I wish him well."

Don King , whom Tyson is suing for 100 million dollars, also said he was pleased with the decision by the Nevada Athletic Commission.

"I am delighted Tyson will be able to fight again," said King, who’s accused of cheating the former heavyweight champ out of millions of dollars.

The Commission voted 4-1 to allow Tyson to box again. It had revoked his license and fined him three million dollars after he was disqualified for biting Evander Holyfield’s ears in their rematch on June 28, 1997.

"Taking the three million dollars was punishment enough," Holmes said. "He paid his dues with that."

As for Holyfield, he has often said he thought Tyson had paid for his mistake and should get a license.

"The primary victim of that mistake has forgiven him completely," said Jim Thomas, Holyfield’s lawyer. "Mike has had an exemplary career inside the ropes, with one major exception. Everybody deserves a second chance."

Mills lane, the referee who disqualified Tyson, did not wish to give an opinion.

"It’s the Commission’s call to do what they think is appropriate," Lane said. "They made this choice, now let’s move on."

King, through spokesman Greg Fritz, said allowing Tyson to return to the ring was the "fair thing to do."

"The Nevada State Athletic Commission is the greatest in the world and I believe they displayed wisdom and justice in allowing Mike Tyson to apply for a boxing license," he said.

There is talk of Tyson returning to the ring as early as December. He is under contract to showtime.

"We have a contract for a significant number of fights over the course of a significant amount of time," said Jay Larkin, senior vice president for boxing and entertainment programming for the cable network.

Whomever and whenever Tyson fights, Holmes believes the former champ could face a tough challenge.

" His toughest fight will be with the first opponent who gets into the ring with him who’s not afraid of him," Holmes said.

"His hole card has been tipped. Evander Holyfield showed how to fight Mike Tyson don’t run, stand in there and box him." (AP)

continues his winning spree

HYDERABAD, Oct 20:

Top seeded India’s Prahlad Srinath and second seed Rovai Federico of Sweden posted victories in contrasting style but it was the qualifier Saurav Panja who hogged the limelight when he scored an upset win against seventh seed Marian Leysek of Slovakia and sailed into the pre-quarters of the ITF-GVK Indian Satellite Tennis Circuit Second Oleg tournament being played here today.

Srinath who won the first leg at Mumbai couple of days back without much sweat on his eyebrow sidelined Praveen Sreenivasan at 6-4, 6-4.

Both the players shared eight games but it was in the ninth game that Srinath broke Praveen’s serve and held on to his own to win the first set at 6-4.

It was the same story in the second set which Srinath won at 6-4. It was clear that Srinath was having a feel of the court and that is the reason he took his own time to win the tie. Srinath will take on Vishal Gupta in the pre-quarters.

Second seed Rovai Federico in a match which lasted a little over 70 minutes struggled to oust Hungarian — Zoltan Boroczky at 7-6, (7-2), 6-2.

Both the players kept the ball at the baseline and at times rushed to the net to emerge clear winners. Both the players committed too many unforced errors. It was the second seed Rovai who committed lesses number of errors and won the first round.

In the crucial stages of the first set, Zoltan committed double faults. Adding to this, he had pain in his left knee because of braces. Moreover in the second set doctors had to attend on him to examine his knee. Former India’s junior national champion Saurav Panja scored an upset win over seventh seed Marian Leysek at 6-4, 6-1 which lasted about 60 minutes.

With today’s victory Panja avenged the defeat he had suffered in Mumbai in the hands of Marian.

In the second set Panja played like a champion and conceded only one game to win the set and match at 6-4, 6-1.

In another interesting tie, third seed Patrick Erhardt of Germany playing an aggressive game had to bring his best foot forward to beat a spirited fight from south paw Vinod Sridhar at 7-5, 6-4 even as fourth seeded Johan Dede of Sweden without much ado moved into the second round defeating qualifier Gerhard Fahlke of Germany 6-1, 6-3.

Unseeded Panja upset Marian Leysek

HYDERABAD, Oct 20:

Unseeded Saurav Panja of India upset seventh seed Marian Leysek of Slovakia 6-4 6-1 to move into the men’s singles pre-quarter finals of Indian ITF Satellite Tennis Circuit at Aplta-Saap tennis courts here today.

Panja began on a rousing note taking a lead of 4-1 in the first set. Leysek failed to counter the Indian’s powerful shots and lost the first set 4-6.

In the second set, Panja faced virtually no resistance and wrapped up the set, with some good baseline play at 6-1, and the match.

Other seeds to move into pre-quarters are— top seed Prahlad Srinath of India, Federico Rovai of Sweden, Patrick Erhardt (Germany) and Johan Hede (Sweden) - second, third and fourth seeds in that order.

In an evenly contested 90-minute encounter between Srinath and Praveen Sreenivasan, the latter gave the top seed a run for his money effectively countering his strong forehand to draw level at 4-4. But Srinath fresh from his exploits at the Mumbai leg of Indian ITF Satellite Tennis where he annexed the title, broke back in the next game to lead 5-4 and then held on to his serve to take the first set at 6-4.

Even in the second set, Srinath who led 4-2, had to put his best foot forward to outplay his opponent. Sreenivasan came back with vengeance with some delectable drop shots to make it 4-5. But Srinath called on his experience to pocket the set 6-4 and the match. (PTI)
