JAMMU, Nov 1:
Border Security Force (BSF) Srinagar outplayed Cantt Star 3-0 in the Ist Jammu Gold Cup Football Tournament organised by Jammu Gymkhana Sports Club, Jammu at Mini Stadium, here today.

BSF Srinagar hit all the three goals in second half of the match. During the first half of the match both the sides fought well to each other thus making it a goalless game. But in the second half BSF changed their strategy putting some extra efforts managed to score their first gold within the first 15 minutes. It was Mother Singh (10), who scored two goals, headed the well calculated pass into the goal post from the left side.

Lead by a goal, put the Cantt Star under pressure and they could not came out of that. Taking advantage of their one goal lead, BSF Srinagar added another goal in their total, when P Adhikari(23) hit a goal from the right side in the 58th minute.

The third and final goal was again hit Mother Singh, from the right side in the last ten minutes of the game.

In total 17 teams are taking part in the tournament was declared open by Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mr S K Mishra, IPS yesterday.

The teams included two from BSF, two from Army, besides J&K Forest, J&K Police, Vijay Club, Young Hero’s, Young Stars and Cantt Star.

In the first match, BSF Jammu thrashed Young Christains 5-0.

Others, who were present on the inaugural day included messrs BK Magotra, SM Gill, MLC, Ashok Sharma, Honorary treasurer and Jammu and Kashmir Football Association. Besides, Ajaz Qazmi, organising secretary of the club, Shiv Paul Sharma, Bishamber Singh, Yogesh Kohli, Arun Sharma, David Massiah, Harbans Lal and Mohan Lal,

A memento was presented to the chief guest, Mr Mishra by Mr B K Magotra. Mementos were donated by Bajwa Transport Company.

JAMMU, Nov 1:
Amit Singh Salaria (Budoka) and Nischal Mahajan (youngest girl) emerged as all round best in junior boys open and sub-junior girls categories in the two days 5th All J&K State Karate Championship which concluded here this evening at indoor sports complex, MA Stadium here. The championship was organised by Jammu and Kashmir Karate Association which is affiliated with Traditional Karate Federation of India.

Show of quick punch and kicks was there specially in the weight categories of above 50 kg to 66 kg. A good number of players got minor nose and elbow injuries and were given on the spot treatment by their counter parts.

Players were so enthusiastic they wanted to fight even after getting injured in their earlier fights. Parents were there to see their wards in action.

On the concluding day, Minister for Food, Supplies and Transport, Mr Ajay Sadhotra was the chief guest and distributed medals among the winners and runners up. Later, Minister was honoured with memento by the chairman of the association, Mr Omkar Singh. General secretary of the association, Er O R Katoch presented vote of thanks.

In girls category there was only one match was played in the weight category of 51 to 55kg today, wherein Neha Jalali got gold, while Sona Sethi won silver medal.

On the concluding day, Dr S Rao, Education Officer and incharge sports and games activity of the region distributed shields, medals and certificates of merit to the winners and runners up. He expressed his happiness over the successful conduct of the meet and complimented the staff members and PETs, Mr SK Sharma in particular.

In Table Tennis, Udhampur has won the title, while Pathankot got second place. Badminton title won by Jammu, while Pathankot got second place.

In Kabaddi, Jammu and Udhampur got first and second place respectively, while, in Kho Kho Jammu got first place, while second place went to Pathankot.

Daushyant of Udhampur and Sunny Duggal of Jammu were declared as best players in Table Tennis and Badminton respectively. While in Kabaddi, Manmohan of Jammu and Surinder Singh of Pathankot adjudged as best in Kabaddi and Kho Kho events respectively.

Special prize went to Akhil of Yol Cantt.

Ranji Trophy league MP take first innings lead

NEW DELHI, Nov 1:

Madhya Pradesh bowlers ran through the Railway batting to ensure a vital 40-run first innings lead and were 51 for two in their second knock on the third day of their Central Zone Ranji Trophy league tie at the Karnail Singh Stadium here today.

Railways, overnight a promising 108 for two in reply to MP’s first innings tally of 266, failed to consolidate and were dismissed for 226, about half-an-hour before tea.

In MP’s second knock, opener Harvinder Sodhi (24 batting) and Prashant Dwivedi (13 batting) were crawling after the dismissals of opener J P Yadav (2) and skipper Chandrakant Pandit (1). MP were ahead by 91 runs with a day to go.

The over-defensive approach could perhaps be due to key batsman Amay Khurasias inability to bat high in order. The left-hander did not take the field in the morning due to fever and hence can come only at number five.

None of the Railway batsmen could cross the fifty-mark. Sanjay Bangar, overnight on 46, added two more runs before edging medium-pacer Harvinder Sodhi to Abbas Ali at the slips his 48 came in three-and-a-half hours (183b, 4x4, 1x6).

Only skipper Prahlad Rawat (47 - 149m, 114b, 5x4) contributed anything substantial among the others as the last eight wickets tumbled for the addition of only 113 runs.

For MP, Sodhi (2/26), left-arm spinner Sunil Lahore (2/42), off-spinner Rajesh Chauhan (2/64) and leg spinner Narendra Hirwani (2/71) shared the spoils.

HYDERABAD, Nov 1 :


Tamil Nadu batted throughout the day scoring 372 for eight in 174 overs as the the four-day Ranji Trophy match between the visitors and hosts Hyderabad ended in a draw here today.

With this TaNil nadu gained five points and Hyderabad gained three points from this encounter.

Resuming at 193 for three wickets, Tamil Nadu batted through till the end of the ninth mandatory over to call off play and signal the end of the match.

Overnight batsman Sharath continued from where he had lefton the second day and batted till the start of the mandatory overs but was unlucky to be out just two runs short of his century.

Debutant wicket keeper batsman T R Arasu (54 not out) capitalised on the presence of his skipper’s company in adding 89 runs for the eighth wicket in 132 minutes in 34.4 overs. Arasu unbeaten innings included a six and seven fours off 131 balls in 169 minutes.

183 runs defeat to J&K

Left arm off-spinner Navdeep Singh sent Jammu and Kashmir crashing to an innings and 183 runs defeat on the fourth and last day of the Ranji Trophy league encounter against hosts Punjab at the Gandhi grounds here today.

Navdeep who claimed four wickets yesterday added another two this morning to return with career best figures of six for 55. The Chandigarh player had a haul of eight wickets in this match.

This was Punjab’s second successive innings victory in as many Ranji matches while, for J and K this was their second loss. In their first match of the current season.

Punjab had defeated Himachal Pradesh at Una while J and K had lost to the Services in their first encounter.

Moving from overnight score of 133 for seven, the J and K second innings folded up within half an hour of play today for the addition of just 23 runs. While Navdeep claimed the wickets of Vijay Sharma and Rajkumar, off spinner Sandeep Sawal got rid of Vivek Singh.

The first to go was Vivek Singh (14) with the scoreboard reading 152. He played forward to a turning delivery of Sandeep Sawal and was caught in front of the wicket.

Besides Navdeep the other successful bowlers for the hosts were Sandeep Sawal who captured two wickets and Harvinder Singh and Kailash Sawal who shared one a piece. Sandeep Sawal who made his Ranji debut here had a haul of five wickets in the match.

On a day of upsets, Chotu Ram Zamindar (CRZ) school, Sonepat stunned fancied Lyallpur Khalsa School,Jalandhar 1-0 to set up a title clash with Army boys sports company, Danapur in the 27th junior Nehru Hockey Tournament here today.

In the first semifinal, army boys sports company upset favourite Birsamunda Vidyapitha, Rourkela (Orissa) 5-1.

The final is scheduled to be played tomorrow.

Lyallpur Khalsa school, who had chalked out three successive big wins in the quarterfinal league, were surprised by Sonepat school.

CRZ which struggled to make it to the last four grade scored the all important goal in the 21st minute through Harish Kumar and then defended the lead till the end.

Harish captalised on the defensive lapse of the rivals and shot home the goal which turned out to be the winner.

The way Lyallpur boys played it looked as they had already peaked in the quarterfinal league. They muffed chances galore and could not produce the same form which they had displayed in the earlier matches.

CRZ boys after taking the lead beefed up their defence and the Jalandhar boys found it tough to penetrate the congested rival defence.

Though Jalandhar side had more share of attacks they failed to get the goal and had to bow out of contention.

Earlier army boys sports company, put behind 2-5 rout they had suffered at the hands of Lyallpur school yesterday and played fast game.

In a match in which both the teams played same style of hockey, adopted identical tactics and strategies, the score at half time was 1-1.

Gabriel Herenj put danapur ahead in the 12th minute when he scored off a penalty corner. Birsamunda equalised in the very next minute with a furious counter and Mangra Minz sent the ball home (1-1).

In the second half Biraj Tete scored two goals (in 43rd and 61st minutes) while Arvind Kumar and Alexius Tirkey chipped in a goal each in the 53rd and 58th minute to complete the tally for Danapur. (UNI)

Lu-Wen-Teh completes wire-to-wire victory in Ericsson Classic

TAIPEI, Nov 1:
Taiwan’s Lu Wen-Teh completed his wire-to-wire victory in the 200,000 dollar Ericsson Classic but only after a dramatic sudden-death play-off against Felix Casas of the Philipipines and Mexico’s Carlos Espinosa.

On the par four last at Formosa first golf club, triumphed after his sand wedfge approach from 90 yards on the second play-off hole hit the flagstick and dropped down to six feet. From there he holed out for a birdie to claim the first place cheque 32,,300 dollars.

Espinosa also had a chance to birdie the hole but his attempt from 20 feet narrowly missed while casas had ruled himself out of contention after snap hooking his tee shot 150 yards left into water.

It was a complete reversal of fortune for casas who moments earlier, on the first play-off hole, watch agonishingly as his chip from just of the green for a birdie liped out of the hole.

The drama wasn’t confined to just the play off in what is the 14th leg of this year’s Omega Tour. Lu had led after each of the first three days but appeared to have lost his chance of victory after finding water on the par three 15th and taking a double bogey.

Casas and Espinsoa led on seven under by one from lu with three to play before casas and Lu birdied 16 to leave the Filipino out in front by one.

The action then started on the 377 yard 18th when Lu and Espinosa both holed Birdie putts from about 20 feet to force the tournament into overtime.

The three runaway leaders, playing the the same flight, finished tied on eight-under-par 280 after Lu and Casas carded two-under -par 70s and Espinosa a three-under-par 69. (UNI)

Calicut men and Pune women emerged victorious to don the crown in the All India Inter University Badminton championship here today.

Calicut men drubbed Punjab 3-0, while Pune knocked out Punjabi 2-0 for the title. In the matches for the third and fourth places, Sardar Patel men pipped Pune 3-0, while last year winners Nagarjuna edged out Calicut 2-0.

For Calicut, Diju whipped Rajat Johal 15-3, 15-6 to give the lead. Later Sanave Thomas scored a facile 15-4, 15-2 win to leave the team just match away from the title. The two combined later and outgunned Amandeep and Sunil 15-5, 15-2.

Ketaki Takkar of Pune put the team in the lead beating Navdeep Kaur 11-3, 11-3. Later Ketaki teamed with Kranti Sane and toyed with Meeta Bhandari and Navdeep Kaur 15-2, 15-2 for the title.

BANGALORE, Nov 1: A timely knock of 141 from opener Arun Kumar helped Karnataka draw their South Zone Ranji Trophy cricket league match against Andhra today and gain five points by virtue of their first innings lead.

Put on the defensive by the stiff target of 405 for an outright win, Karnataka managed to finish their second innings at 300 for five at the M Chinnasamy Stadium here.

The Ranji champions were in trouble after losing opener Sujit Somasundar (11) and Fazal Khaleel (0) with the score on 41 when Vijay R Bharadwaj came in.

Arun Kumar, playing his 29th match, scored his sixth century and added a valuable 203 runs for the third wicket with Vijay (75).

Arun Kumar stayed at the create for 331 minutes and hit 17 fours and a six during his knock, before he was run out.

The scenario changed as Vijay made his exit at the start of the mandatory overs, bowled by Madhukar, and H T Girish Rao, who came in next, was soon out for five.

Sensing his chances, Andhra skipper Amit Pathak applied pressure tactics and brought close-in fielders. But, a Vijay scored an beaten 38, including nine boundaries, prevented any further damage.
