JAMMU, Dec 27: Fog again disrupts the play on the second day of the four day Ranji Trophy match being played between Jammu and Kashmir and Delhi at M A Stadium, here. Only 145 minute play took place today.

Delhi resumed its innings from overnight score of 81 for seven at 11. 40 in the morning and ended the innings at a score of 148 in 54.3 overs. 67 more runs were added today in 54.3 overs.

In reply to Delhi’s small total, Jammu and Kashmir score 35 for two. Openers, Vivek Singh and Nissar Khan made a good start and took the score to 33. Both the batsmen were playing confident shots.

Vivek, who was bowled by Sandeep Angurala, made seven runs after facing 40 balls in his 50 minutes stay on the wicket. While at the other end, Nissar Khan was hitting the ball hard and was playing on 21 runs including three boundaries.

After the dismissal of Vivek, captain Sanjay Singh promoted the tale-ender batsman Surinder Singh, who met the same fate on the same total of 33 runs.

Then Kanwaljeet Singh took the charge, he too had a difficult time in facing right arm leg spinner, Sandeep Angurala and complained of bad light to the umpire.

Even after Kanwaljeet’s repeated pleas to the umpires, two overs were played. Thereafter, decision was taken to abandoned the match for time-being. But ultimately, the umpires called off the match after bowling 35 overs to Jammu and Kashmir.

In the beginning, Delhi used its three medium pacers, Ashish Nehra and Amit Bhandari and Aakash Malhotra but without any success. A shift from three fast bowler to spinner, Sandeep Angurala help Delhi to break the openers and create pressure.

Earlier, Sandeep Angurala, who played a long inning remained on the crease 102 minute contributing valuable 38 runs. Amit Bhandari (17) gave a good support and added 47 runs alongwith Sandeep for the last wicket partnership.

J&K star bowler, Surinder Singh, who restricted Delhi at 81 for seven clinching four wickets yesterday, took another wicket of Amit today.

Vijay Sharma, who got two wicket yesterday, bowled Ashish Nehra this morning.

Australia will resist calls for life bans
on Warne, Mark Waugh

MELBOURNE, Dec 27: Australia will resist calls for life bans on test stars Shane Warne and Mark Waugh when cricket’s governing body meets next month to discuss gambling in the sport.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Khalid Mahmood was today reported as saying that Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka would lobby the International Cricket Council (ICC) at its meeting in New Zealand to slap life bans on Warne and Waugh.

The Australian pair apologised earlier this month for providing pitch and weather information to an illegal Indian bookmaker while on tour of Sri Lanka in 1994.

The duo were fined by the Australian Cricket Board in February 1995 in action kept secret until early December.

The bookmaker scandal and the impact of gambling on cricket is on the agenda of the ICC meeting on Jan 10 and 11 in Christchurch.

Mahmood said ICC member nations from the subcontinent were set to turn up the heat over Waugh and Warne.

"The subcontinent was unanimous that the guilty players should banned for life when we met at New Delhi ten days ago," Mahmood said.

"At least three countries (Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka) will be pressing the ICC to step in, investigate the charges and clamp life bans on those found guilty."

Any ban would have to be approved by a majority of the nine ICC executive board members with Australia certain to resist.

ACB Chairman Denis Rogers and Chief Executive Officer Malcolm speed could not be contacted today but both have said the board considers the Waugh and Warne controversy closed.

They have declined to supply documents relating to the ACB’s investigation in 1994-95 into Waugh and Warne to a Pakistan judicial inquiry into match fixing.

Two days before the ICC meeting, Waugh and Warne will give testimony before the Pakistan inquiry sitting here.

PCB legal adviser Ali Sibtain Fazli and Lahore High Court registrar Abdus Alam Khawar will travel to Australia to hear the testimony because Waugh and Warne were reluctant to travel to Pakistan, and attempts to set up a live video link failed. (AP)

Services crawl to 313 for 8

NEW DELHI, Dec 27: C D Thomson made a slow, unbeaten 58 as Services crawled to 313 for eight wickets in their first innings at close on the severely truncated second day of their North Zone Ranji Trophy Cricket tie against Haryana at the Harbaksh stadium today.

Thick fog ruled out any play in the morning session and Services, resuming at their overnight 201 for 5, added just 112 runs losing three more wickets in two sessions of play.

Thomson and J P Pandey (20 batting) had added 42 runs for the eighth wicket when play was halted 20 minutes beyond scheduled close due to enveloping haze and poor light.

Thomson, 29 overnight, continued sedately as services, needing to win this final tie for a superleague spot at Haryana’s expense, showed no enterprise.

Haryana bowlers struck with the second new ball as Vineet Jain had Amit Nadkarni caught by Jitender Singh at first slip for 43 (7 x 4) and fellow paceman Parinder Sharma removed Sanjay Sirsat (12) before off-spinner Pankaj Thakur trapped Syed Javed (16) leg before to make it 271 for 8.

But Pandey and Thomson stay put to push the scorepast the 300-run mark. Thomson was dropped by Shafiq Khan at silly point playing forward to left-arm spinner Pradeep Jain while Pandey was caught off a no ball from Vineet Jain.

Vineet Jain sent down many short pitched stuff and was guilty of bowling 16 no balls.

Brief scores: Services 313 for 8 in 123.2 overs (Sarabjit Singh 65, C D Thomson 58 batting, Amit Nadkarni 43, Vineet Jain 2/87, Parinder Sharma 2/42, Pradeep Jain 2/67). (PTI)

India let Kiwi batsmen off hook

WELLINGTON, Dec 27: Indian bowlers once again failed to wipe out the tail after fighting back to regain initiative as New Zealand built an 82-run first innings lead with three wickets in hand at close on the second day of the second test at the basin reserve here.

Dismissed for a modest 208 yesterday, India led by leg spinner Anil Kumble forced their way in the post-lunch session to leave the Kiwis at 209 for seven at tea-break. But their inability to drive home the advantage was exposed as Dion Nash and Daniel Vettori posted an unbeaten 82-run eighth wicket stand to pull their team to 290 for seven at stumps.

Nash, unbeaten on 56, and Vettori, batting on 35, built up what could emerge a very crucial stand to give New Zealand the upperhand after the hosts had resumed at 52 for one.

India, needing to effect early breakthrough on a wicket which is showing all signs of assisting spin, began well by removing both overnight batsmen Matt Horne and skipper Stephen Fleming to leave the hosts at 132 for three at lunch.

Kumble, who was the most impressive and returned three for 67, alongwith the fiery Javagal Srinath and Venkatesh Prasad captured four wickets after lunch to raise strong visions of India making up for their poor batting but looked a tired lot in the final session to let their rivals move towards their target of posting a lead of around 120 runs.

Left-hander Fleming was he first to go, run out to a fine pick and throw by Ajay Jadeja as the Kiwi skipper went for a second run on playing Srinath to the onside. His 42 came off 96 balls and contained four boundaries.

Kumble then dismissed Horne (38 - 129 b, 4 x 4) by deceiving to bowl him off-stump with a googly as the batsman played back after the opener had survived two difficult chances when Rahul Dravid at slips just failed to reach a snick and Jadeja could not reach an uppish hook.

Horne occupied the crease for 190 minutes which sapped the energy of the limited Indian attack.

On resumption, Srinath greeted the Kiwi batsmen wit hostile spell. The lanky pacemen even bowled Nathan Astle, then on 24, off an inside edge only to find it was off a no ball. He rattled the batsmen with bouncers, striking Craig McMillan on the helmet grille and then Parore on his shoulder.

He was finally rewarded after Saurav Ganguly’s delayed response to a chance at forward shortleg by McMillan saw the fielder replaced by Rahul Dravid. Dravid came up with a fine catch off the very next ball to remove McMillan (24).

After Srinath’s nine-over spell (1 for 27), Prasad and Kumble returned and were rewarded with two quick wickets, Kumble trapped Adam Parore (2) leg before and Chris Cairns (3) fell playing Prasad uppishly to Sachin Tendulkar at mid off.

Kumble then too the most important wicket from from the far end when he bowled the well-entrenched Nathan Astle (56-137 b, 6 x 4, 1 x 6) after he had celebrated his fifty by carting off-spinner Harbhajan Singh over long off for a six.

Both Nash and Vettori confidently took on a tiring Kumble and Harbhajan Singh, still struggling with his rhythm. Once vettori smashed the teenager for two fours, Azhar went in for the second new ball at 233 which did not yield any reward.

Bill to include sports in concurrent list on anvil

BHOPAL, Dec 27: The Government is considering the introduction of a Bill to include sports in the concurrent list during the coming budget session of Parliament, Union Minister of State for Youth and Sports Affairs Uma Bharti said here today.

Many of the problems facing sports in India arose from the subject not being on the concurrent list, and thereby out of the Centre’s purview, the minister said at a press meet here, adding that she hoped a Bill on the matter would be introduced during the budget session.

With most sports federations being autonomous bodies, it was difficult for the Government to have a major say in the selection of teams, Uma Bharti said.

She said following her efforts, Punjab, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat had agreed to the proposal for including sports in the concurrent list.

The minister identified Interference from politicians and bureaucrats as the major reason for lack of proper development of sports in the country.

Politicians are the bane of Indian sports, she said, adding that politicians from all parties interfered in sports activities. (PTI)

UP-Railways one-day tie abandoned

KANPUR, Dec 27: Poor visibility due to fog caused the abandonment of the Central Zone one-day cricket match between hosts Uttar Pradesh and Railways here today.

The two umpires S K Bansal of Delhi and Alok Bhatacharya of West Bengal after three inspections of the pitch finally decided to call off play.

Meanhwile, Uttar Pradesh will look to gain vital first innings lead against Railways in the four-day Ranji Trophy tie to fetch a berth in the super league.

The hosts have so far bagged 13 points in the Central Zone league matches while the rival Railways have 14.

The weather was likely to play a vital role as the city was in the grip of a cold wave.

Though both the teams had nets today and were confident of a good show, the UP Manager Chaudhary Asif Ali said that his side will adopt do or die tactics to go all out for a win. (PTI)
