contests Chamber claim JAMMU, Dec 26: A meeting of the J&K Motor Transport Companies Association was held under the presidentship of S Gian Singh. As per a release, the meeting discussed in detail a report published in Daily Excelsior today under the caption "Chamber depu visits Lakhanpur Toll Barrier". The transporters contested the claim of the Chamber that enforcement of 9 Metric Tonne load condition has lead to unnecessary hold up of the vehicles at the Toll Post. The Association said the 9 MT load restriction is a legal requirement as provided in the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, according to which load capacity of each load carrier has to be recorded in its Registration Certificate which is roughly 9 MT. It is on the basis of this legal provision that the Chief Minister, after having discussed the issue with the concerned authorities and personally visiting Lakhanpur had ordered enforcement of 9 MT load restriction strictly and imposition of fine on the vehicles carrying load more than 9 MT proportionate to the extent of overload, said the Association members. The association said further that the claim of the Chamber that this restriction leads to traffic hold-up at Lakhanpur is not correct. The transporters, therefore reiterated imposition of 9 MT restrictions more faithfully. They also mentioned that the general secretary of the association had visited Lakhanpur on December 23 and met the Deputy Excise Commissioner and ARTO there and had suggested better management of vehicles at the bridge and speedy clearance of sales tax formalities. Both the officers had appreciated the suggestion and promised its implementation. The transporters held that view that this restriction was necessary because apart from being a legal requirement it will help avoid accidents and creation of high vehicular pollution. The transporters therefore supported the claim of Chamber regarding speedy clearance of vehicles round the clock and early completion of the renovation and computerisation of the barrier at Lakhanpur. They were further of the view that the present foggy weather could be one of the reasons which had affected the rail and air traffic throughout Northern India. The meeting among others was attended by Mehta Rachhpal Singh, vice president and Mr Rakesh Gupta, general secretary of MTCA. |
