Improve moral education Sir, Just to get admissions to some of the "elite' missionary schools, one has to use influence and pay a large donation. This is the beginning of the story of regular extortion and money collection drives for "social and justifiable causes." After graduating, one's ambition is to get a Government job and a plum "posting" where one can make a quick buck. Also, if the person is a he, then his objective is to get a working wife and maximum dowry. This is what most of our educated people aspire! On the top of this, we have more than 50 percent of illiterate peole after 50 years of independence. Among those who are educated, there is a high-level of unemployment and underemployment. Congress and Congress backed Governments ruled us most of the time. Are not the education policies of the Congress and Congress backed Governments a disaster? If we examine the society and the State of the nation in general at least with more literate people the social ills and social and economic inequalities should have been reduced. If the general conditions have deteriorated and the corruption is at a high level, is there any justification for continuing the present education system? Now let us come to the education system in Western countries. Here, the US is supposed to be the leader in Western education system. In the US, education system is said to be responsible for churning out citizens without any moral values. The US has more than two thirds of marriages ending in divorces. In India, one may not understand the affect of such a high percentage of divorces. It is the kids of women who suffer most. Though a high percentage of women are working, the abuse of women by different means is at a high level. The family has gone down the tubes. The children are brought up in day cares. As a result, one can notice the total absence of the values and a high-level of weird crimes. Many people place these problems on the failure of religion and education system. Some of the biggest complaints of US corporations are that students don't have the basic reading and writing skills and they are unemployable. Everybody is attacking the education system for the lack of moral values and breakdown of family. Or else how can you explain the sexual escapades of a highly educated and intelligent person like President Clinton? However, more appalling is that the general public is least concerned about the moral conduct of the first citizen. Our missionary schools have been blindly aping the failed Western education system and touting it as a successful model. They forget that we have a far richer and greater tradition, values and cultural ethos than the one they are trying to blindly copy. In the missionary schools, in the name of discipline obnoxious and outdated practices are thrust on students. Teachers in many missionary schools are not even fully qualified to be teachers. The education they impart have no relevance to the real India and job market. The students in missionary school lack the mathematical and science skills. In many cases, even their English is not-up-to the mark. We are carrying on the legacy left behind by the British. The British wanted a bunch of babus who would do the dirty jobs for them. For Congress party education was never a priority. Overall results of these muddled and blinkered education system and policies have only created poorly "educated" people who are not socially and morally responsible citizens. When Dr Murli Manohar Joshi is trying to reform the current rotten education system, the blind opposition of Congress and Marxists is most deplorable. In some of the polls conducted on the Internet, Dr Joshi's proposals got overwhelming support. If some people think that Dr Joshi is wrong, then those who make such assumptions are in their own little world and are ignorant of the ground realities and feelings of the people. A teacher and intellectual such as Dr Joshi is doing exactly what he is supposed to do. Failure to implement his proposals immediately will be regarded as his failure! Yours etc... |
Sushma Swaraj Sir, It refers to resignation of Sushma Swaraj from her newly-won seat of Delhi Assembly by retaining her old seat of Lok Sabha. Such a selfish move of an individual political deceiving her voters was on expected lines. It is not understood why public money is uselessly wasted for unnecessary by-elections caused for selfish interests of politicians. Law must be enacted that no persons may be allowed to contest from more than one constituency or for both Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha. Even a sitting MP or MLA must resign first from his/her earlier seat before filing nomination for the other seat. To discourage non-serious candidates, Election Commission may be authorised for timely review of security - amounts. Persons losing security may be disqualified to contest any direct election for next six years! But opportunity to rectify technical mistakes in nomination forms may be given after scrutiny to discourage filing of nominations by dummy candidates. To eliminate frequent elections, terms of state assemblies whose terms are to expire upto one year before or after Lok Sabha elections, may be automatically increased or reduced by upto one year for ensuring elections of such assemblies with Lok Sabha. Regular and by-elections of Rajya Sabha can be simultaneously held by electing persons with higher votes for full terms, and with subsequent lower votes for part terms. Provision of Vidhan Parishads in states may be abolished, since these serve no useful purpose other than burdening exchequers for employment of extra politicians at public cost. Yours etc..... |
Education Sir, This is in reference to the news item (IGNOU & NCERT) to reach door step which appeared in Daily Excelsior dated 2.12.1998. According to news item IGNOU and NCERT will reach more than 500,000 students in country and abroad through their Distance education and correspondence education system. This is a welcome step taken by IGNOU &NCERT authorities. Today if we look at the present education scenario of India we can easily find that formal education system has failed to cope with the emerging needs and demands of the individuals and the aspirations of the society. India is a large country with a large population and there are millions of such people who are capable but could not get education due to lack of facilities. And to ensure educational opportunity to every one non-formal education has become must. In non-formal education, distance education and correspondence education assume a vital place. In this type of education system, students enjoy advantage of studying at their own place and in their own independent way. There is no inter -action between the students and teachers. Students and teachers are linked through TV Radio, correspondence, printed material, internet, doubt clearing letters etc. etc. In words of professor Holmberg Distance education is the various form of study at all levels which are not under continuous immediate supervision of tutor present in lecture room or on the same premises, but which nevertheless benefit from the planning, guidance and tuition of a tutorial organisation. Main aims of such education system are:- *To provide education to those who could not get education due to poverty. * To enable people to learn and earn * To eradicate adult illiteracy * To universalise primary education * To improve professional and academic qualification, and many more. * Success achieved so far by this system of education makes people to put more faith in this system because formal system of education has failed to achieve the target. Lastly I feel that when population of our country is growing at a tremendous rate and nor economy is in poor condition then only non-formal system of education can prove a significant step towards better education. Yours
