White paper on ISI likely to be placed in Parliament: HM CALCUTTA, Dec 12: The Government is likely to place a white paper on ISI activities in the country during the current session of Parliament, Union Home Minister L K Advani said here today. "ISI base is not the right word. There are individuals acting on behalf of the ISI and they have been working for over the past 15 years throughout the country", Advani told reporters during a brief stop-over here on his way to Aizawl to inaugurate an airport there. He, however, declined to comment whether any politician was involved in ISI activities. Advani said the Government was well geared to counter the divisive activities of the ISI and already achieved a "major success" in combating it. (PTI) |
Kalyan describes Shuklas allegation as baseless AGRA, Dec 12: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh has described as baseless the allegation of the sacked State Minister for Education Ravindra Shukla that the Kalpa Yojna, under which the rendition of Vande Mataram and Saraswati Vandana were made compulsory in Government schools, had his approval. The Kalpa Yojna was finalised on September 5 only and hence there is no question of it being approved on June 6. The fact was that Shukla was trying to cover up his own misdeeds, Singh said. He told reporters last evening at Kheria Airport that Shuklas dismissal was not because of the Vande Mataram and Saraswati Vandana issue but becaue of the many irregularities and wrongs committed by him. He said Vande Mataram and Saraswati Vandana were constitutionally legal but they had not been included in the Kalpa Yojna as claimed by Shukla. The scheme had to get the approval of the Chief Minister after the necessary legal, financial and other sanctions. All this had not been obtained by Shukla, Kalyan Singh said. Singh alleged that Shukla had kept him in the dark about the Kalpa Yojna and had provided only incomplete information to him about it. It was only on November 28 that he had been told that Vande Mataram had been made compulsory. He said although the state had financial problems, the allegation that the state exchequer was empty and the Government was unable to pay salaries of employees was baseless. (PTI) NASIK, Dec 12: Mr Vinayak Sitaram Athale of Ratnagiri (Maharashtra), Dr Vishwanath Prasad Varma of Patna (Bihar) and Mr Samvedual Ramgopal Shastri of Bobbili (Andhra Pradesh) have been selected for the prestigious Ved vedand Sarda Sadugu Shri Gangeshwaranandji Pratishtan. The trustee of the Pratishtan Kisanlalji Sarda has said that the award which carries Rs 21,000 and a citation would be presented at a function to be held on January 24 on the occasion of 11th anniversary of Shri Guru Gangeshwar Ved Mandir. (UNI) JAKLI will cement association with Indian Navy on Dec 15 MUMBAI, Dec 12: One of the youngest and decorated regiments of the Indian Army, the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (JAKLI) will cement its association with the Indian Navy on December 15 in a ceremony on board Ins Ganga, in keeping with the highest traditions of Inter Service Cooperation. Raised in 1947-48 as a local volunteer force under late Sheikh Abdullahs leadership to fight the Pakistani raiders the JAKLI regiment became a regular regiment of the Indian Army after its heroic performance during the 1971 war. A little known fact about the regiment is that it draws its men from Jammu and Kashmir particularly the Kashmir Valley. Almost 50 per cent of the troops are Muslims. In the present times of religious fundamentalism and intolerance, the JAKLI regiment displays absolute harmony and is a proud torch bearer signifying "unity in diversity" in the truest sense. The JAKLI regiment was in the news recently when President K R Narayanan presented "colours" to the regiment at Srinagar on Oct, 10 1998. At almost the same time one of the battalions of JAKLI regiment successfully repulsed two Pakistani attempts to capture key strategic points in the Northern Glacier in the Siachen sector, an act which was complimented by the Raksha Mantri and Chief of the Army staff. MVM for inclusion of Maithili language PATNA, Dec 12: The Mithilanchal Vikas Manch (MVM) has demanded that the Centre initiate steps for early inclusion of Maithili language in the eighth schedule of the constitution besides evolving schemes for comprehensive development of the region comprising 18 districts of North Bihar. The Manch founder and former BJP state unit president Tarakanth Jha told newsmen here that the Manch would submit a memorandum to President K R Narayanan in February next year in support of its demands. It was now engaged in collecting 51 lakh signatures on the memorandum from people living in Mithila region. The region, ravaged with incessant floods and utter poverty, had been witnessing migration of labour as no developmental works were undertaken during the past 50 years even though it had elected six chief ministers, he said. The only single contribution to the region by the successive regimes in the state was "Daru" (liquor) and "Dalal" (broker) and nothing else resulting in closure of all the industries, he said. Mr Jha said perennial flooding of the region showed the political leaderships lack of concern for the people of the region over the years. Construction of reservoirs across the Kosi and other rivers from Nepal down the region could provide a permanent solution but the respective regimes were callous to the task, he said. The need of the hour was setting up of agriculture and agro-based industries in the region, he said. The Manch leaders further demanded that the State Government restore status quo ante by including Maithili language in the list of recognised optional languages in Bihar as was in practice till 1992. The then Chief Minister Laloo Prasad Yadavs misjudgement identified the language as that of Brahmins and imposed ban on its use as recognised language, he said. Maithili was one of the 17 recognised languages of the Sahitya Academy. The Manch, he said was committed to getting approval of all the political parties in favour of inclusion of the language in the eighth schedule for which two third majority was required in Parliament. Mr. Jha ridiculed the recent observation of the state BJP president Nand Kishore Yadav that the Manch was indulging in a "parallel political mission" in pursuing the cause of the region. In this context, he recalled the 1994 declaration of the state BJP executive and 1995 party manifesto in support of Mithilanchal cause. (UNI) |
UN constitutes international committee TIRUPATI, Dec 12: The United Nations has constituted an international committee to look into the status and needs of the elderly and formulate an agenda for research on ageing in the 21st century. HLD support to BJP will continue, says Chautala CHANDIGARH, Dec 12: The support of four Haryana Lok Dal (HLD) to the Vajpayee Government will continue despite the actions of the BJP which resulted in defeat of HLD nominees in Delhi and Rajasthan during the recent Assembly elections, party general secretary O P Chautala said here today. Addressing a press conference he said the support would continue as they believed in supporting a party which is in distress and passing through bad times. Former Delhi Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma pitted his supporters against three HLD nominees in Delhi while the BJP put up candidates against four HLD nominees in Rajasthan, Chautala said. He said that rising prices, infighting in BJP and non-performance were the other causes for defeat of BJP and its allies in the recent elections. (PTI) |
