Sadhotra calls upon youth to take part in sports

JAMMU, Dec 10: The Minister of State for Food and Supplies, Mr Ajay Sadhotra has called upon the youth to take maximum part in extra-curricular activities and sports competitions.

Speaking at an impressive youth rally at Bhure Chak in Mandal block, near here today, the Minister said youth constitute an important segment of our life and every endeavour should be made to promote their all faculties.

Mr Sadhotra who was addressing the youth at a function of two-day Rural Youth Sports Mela, said such melas provide ample chances to the youth to display their talents and should be organised more frequently. He said youth should be physically strong and morally upright as they have to shoulder much higher responsibilities in the near future.

The Minister asked the participating youth to carry with them the message of unity, love, compassion and patriotism and spread it throughout the country.

Earlier, students drawn from various schools participated in march past and god of honour was also presented by them.

Various cultural programmes comprising the items of folk-songs, dances and skits were presented. Competitions in kabbaddi, volley-ball, tug-of-war and other rural games were held The Government Higher Secondary School, Mandal won the prizes in Kabaddi and tug-of-war while Tawi Sports Club won the prize in volley-ball. The students of Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Mandal, Government Higher Secondary School, Suhanjana, New Kin Academy, Government High School Suhanjana, Government Middle School Bhure Chak won prizes in cultural programmes.

Sheep products Dev Board procures Rs 1.72 cr wool

JAMMU, Dec 10: The Jammu and Kashmir Sheep and Sheep Products Development Board has procured 3.24 lakh kilograms of wool valuing Rs 1.72 crores during the period April-November this year.

This information was given to the Minister for Animal and Sheep Husbandry, Mr Surjit Singh Slathia, during his visit of the Board office at Kartholi, today.

The Minister was told that the Board had made special arrangements for procuring the wool directly from the breeders including far flung areas of Paddar, Karnah, Gurez, Tangdar, Rangdoom, Marwah and Warwan.

He was told that the Board has so far achieved the 75 per cent of the procurement target of wool fixed for the current financial year and every effort will be made to achieve the hundred per cent of the fixed targets. The Board expects to purchase wool of the total value of Rs two crores during the current financial year.

The Minister while visiting the Wool Grading Centre was told that 2.40 lakh kilograms of raw wool has been graded at the two divisional grading centres during the current financial year thus achieving 50 per cent targets fixed.

The Minister was told that new construction works of the Board estimated to cost Rs 2.32 crores are nearing completion. The buildings under construction he was told include Divisional Grading Centre, Srinagar, Storage-cum-Grading Centre, Srinagar, Grading-cum-Storage Centre, Jammu, Office-cum-Wool Testing Laboratory, Jammu and renovation of existing Grading shed Srinagar for the establishment of Industrial Service Centre.

Apprising the Minister about the steps taken for promotion of marketing facilities for the woollen products it was stated that the Sheep and Sheep Products Development Board, organised Woollen Expo-98 for the first time in the State. This Expo was organised in collaboration with the Central Wool Development Board, Jodhpur. Sales exceeding Rs 50 lakhs were effected during the 15 days of Expo.

The Minister inspected Sheep and Wool Workers Training classes and Laboratory located in the complex.

Later addressing the workers the Minister stressed upon them to work with more dedication, zeal, determination and sincerity. He said though many improvements have been effected in the working of the Board still there is scope for further improvements. He expressed the hope that the functionaries and workers would rise to the occasion and work in greater co-ordination so that the better service is provided to the breeders and they are assured of good returns of their produce.

Referring to the demands put forth by the workers, the Minister said that Government is fully abreast of many of the problems and efforts will be made to meet their genuine demands and improving their service conditions at the earliest.

Dr V K Vig, Managing Director of Board highlighted the achievements registered by the Board during the recent past.

Self employment camp held at bari Brahmana

JAMMU, Dec 10: As part of the special campaign of Self-Employment Programme in Jammu district a self employment camp was organised at Bari-Brahamana, Block Headquarter of Purmandal yesterday.

About 300 unemployed youths attended the camp. The District Task Force Committee headed by District Development Commissioner, Jammu, Mr P K Tripathi conducted on spot interviews under J&K Self Employment Programme, PMRY, KVIB and IRDP. 109 candidates were interviewed out of which 90 candidates were selected, 29 candidates under J&K Self Employment Scheme, 10 candidates under PMRY, 34 candidates under KVIB and 17 candidates under IRDP were selected by Task Force. Loan proposals amounting to Rs 32.85 lakhs sanctioned on spot for setting up their own income generating units.

The District Development Commissioner also conducted extensive tour of kandi areas of Purmandal block. The DDC visited villages, Anthem, Tutain-di-Khui, Mana Chakral, Kupper and Bain Bajalta.

Mr Tripathi took stock of developmental works under way in these areas. The Xen PWD Div No. 4 was directed to expedite work on Bain Bajalta Kupper road and Kana Chakral to Shandidoom road so that these far flung areas could be connected with the main stream. The DDC inspected middle school, Anganwadi Centre and Ayurvedic dispensary at village Anthem. He also visited High School, Kana Chakral. The DDC inspected filteration plant and lift irrigation scheme at village Kupper.

People met the DDC and apprised him of their problems. Mr Tripathi impressed upon the functionaries of agriculture, PWD, Power, PHE and Education to attend the problems of people promptly.

The next self employment camps will be held at Vijaypur on 16-12-1998, at Khour on 28-12-1998 and at Akhnoor on 30-12-1998.

Mr Tripathi was accompanied by Chief Planning Officer, Mr R K Verma, Project Officer, DRDA, Mr A K Kachoo, Chief Agriculture Officer, Assistant Commissioner (Development) Officers of PHE, PWD, Power, Irrigation, Health and Education during this tour.

Besides, expenditure incurred on purchase of tools, equipments, vehicles, books and constructions of buildings for Industrial Training Institute during the same period.

The Committee has also asked for the names of suppliers/contractors who have supplied equipment/material and the authority which have approved the purchases. The committee has also asked for incumbency list of the officers of Director Technical Education, Dy Director Technical Education, Srinagar and Jammu and the dates from which the officials/officers are working in these offices. The Department has also been asked to furnish the list of books purchased for ITI Jammu/Srinagar during the year 1988-89 to 1995-96 alongwith the names of officers who have made these purchases. The committee has directed the Technical Education Department to furnish the list of equipments/tools, machinery with are un-utilised and un-installed in 37 Industrial Training Institutes as on 30-12-1998.

Pujaris, Baridars holding dharna at Katra Bus Stand

KATRA, Dec 10: The Baridars and Pandits of Mata Vaishno Devi shrine have continued their strike in support of their demand of subsistence with zeal and zest.

As per a release, the Pujaris and Baridars who used to eke out their livelihood through the offerings at the holy shrine of Mata Vaishnodevi shrine have continued their dharna and relay fast because they have been deprived of their fundamental livelihood.

The people from all walks of life are converging daily at the site of dharna of Baridars and Pundits of Mata Vaishno Devi shrine and console the agitating members of the deprived community.

The speakers at the dharna of Baridars at Bus Stand, Katra stated that they were not against the Shri Mata Vaishnodevi Shrine Board, but their main grouse was that they were being mis-understood.

They said they were not the rivals of Shrine Board in any sense but were being dubbed as such.

They said their struggle was only for securing the sustenance of poor Baridars and Pujaries, who have remained all along dependent on offerings of the devotees at the shrine.

The Baridars have pleaded that the Government should, while initiating measures from the development of the shrine, also consider the subsistence of the poor Baridars and Pujaris of the holy shrine.

RKJ, DD work affected due to employees’ strike

JAMMU, Dec 10: Normal work of Radio Kashmir Jammu (RKJ) and Doordarshan was badly affected on the first day of the 72 hour strike launched by the Programme Staff Association (PSA) of All India Radio and Doordarshan, Jammu unit.

No fresh recordings and dubbings took place today and the scheduled programmes got deviated and were substituted by the music. The artists were not also attended as they went back without being recorded, a PSA release issued here said.

It said that the agitation is to be intensified till the authorities concede the demands of the employees.

The Association has launched 72 hour strike today as a nation-wide strike. The Broadcasters and Programme Planners have been demanding implementation of pay scales already agreed to by by the Prasar Bharati Board.

The Association release said that almost one year has passed when the new scales for Transmission Executives and Programme Executives were accepted, but they are yet to be implemented.

The country wide agitation began with lunch hour demonstrations and gate meetings at all AIR and DD Kendras from December 1. The sit in dharnas were also organised inside the premises of all capital stations, including at Radio Kashmir Jammu.

Mangat Ram calls on Governor

JAMMU, Dec. 10: Mr Mangat Ram Sharma, Ex-MP called on Governor, Mr Girish Chandra Saxena and discussed with him various problems pertaining to J&K State.

As per a release, Mr Sharma congratulated the Governor on the commendable works being executed by the Mata Vaishno Devi Ji Shrine Board for the facilities of yatries besides for the development of its surroundings.

He stressed upon the Governor to ask the State Govt. to hold Panchayat elections at an early date so the rural development funds would be utilized in a proper way and population of rural areas would feel that they are being looked after in proper manner and this would also give a feeling of satisfaction to them.

Mr Sharma urged the Governor that the work on Agriculture University of Mata Vaishno Devi should be executed so that long pending demand of Jammu region is fulfilled.

He further impressed upon the Governor that State Govt. should be asked to incorporate representatives of opposition in District Development Boards for ensuring representation of every sections of the society.

He further requested the Governor that contracts of development works be given to genuine persons and chit system adopted by ruling party MLAs be stopped forthwith as it is being said that by the chit system funds are being misused and corruption has become order of the day.

Mr Sharma stressed upon the Governor that State Govt. should be directed to consult all opposition parties and take their advice in fighting terrorism and militancy in the State. He said that this is a national problem and it should be fought unitedly by all pro-India parties. NC alone cannot fight this menace as they have no such capacity.

State Governor assured Pt. Mangat Ram Sharma that problem would be discussed with State Govt. and action taken in the matter would be looked into.

KPs pledge to keep struggle against rights violation on

JAMMU, Dec 10: On the 50th anniversary of Human Rights Declaration, the Kashmiri Pandit Community has resolved to keep the struggle against the violation of their rights on.

In a statement issued here today, Mr Ashwani Kumar Changroo, convenor Panun Kashmir Movement (PKM) who is also the Director of Human Rights Wing of Kashmiri Pandit Political Steering Committee (KPPSC) has expressed deep concern over the neglect of the community by the successive Governments.

He said as the 50th anniversary of universal declaration of human rights and the convention of prevention and punishment of the crime of genocide is being celebrated all over the globe, it is ironical but a fact that a large number of people all over the world continue to face the severe violation despite the world’s march towards a new environs of human rights.

Mr Changroo said the application of human rights needs to be viewed in the context of universal commitments including the convention on the prevention and the punishment of the crime of genocide and universal declaration of human rights.

He said it is obligatory for India to safeguard the liberty of its citizens.

He said half a century’s time should have been established fool proof protection of human rights and sad and tragic situation of genocide should have been eliminated. But alas; even today the Kashmiri Pandit

community is suffering from violation of human rights, genocide, ethnic cleansing, apartheid and discrimination.

He said not only this but the community which is the aborigines of Kashmir with 5,000 years written history stand completely liquidated from their ‘Homeland’ .

He said however, the community understands the importance of international conventions and expresses hope that their country and world community which empahises the new world order will sooner than later awake to the trauma of the suffering community which has become refugee in its own country.

He said with great despair in the hearts the community looks at future with hope and expectation.

He said the scars of the community are deep rooted as it has lost the cultural moorings, places of reverence, bondages of traditions and roots than the loss of properties and wealth.

Mr Changroo said the representatives of KPs have been highlighting the violation of human rights by Islamic fundamentalists and militants at every fora and would continue to do same in future.

He said PKM which is spearheading the movement against the human rights violation of the community for the last five years has sent its delegation to participate in the NHRC meet at Delhi.

ASKPC concern over rights violation

JAMMU, Dec 10: All State Kashmiri Pandit Conference (ASKPC) held a meeting on the Human Rights Day today to recall the sacrifices of hundreds of Kashmiri Pandits who were killed during the past ten years of turmoil in the valley.

The meeting recalled how the human rights of the community were violated when its intelligentia, teachers, scholars , doctors and engineers were hounded out and their house razed to the ground.

The meeting also assailed the callous attitude of the administration towards the plight of the community. It was regretted that the students were the most sufferers and their rights were being violated as they were not being allowed to continue their studies.

The meeting further said that the educated youth of the community have been totally ignored and they were not given chance in the Government jobs.

It was pointed out that no representation was given to the KP youth in the just released list of the teachers for Baramulla and Pulwama districts.
