to declare NEW DELHI, Dec 10: Senior Congress leader Maninderjit Singh Bitta today welcomed Canadas decision to declare LTTE and some Sikh extremist organisations as terrorist outfits and urged the Canadian Government to extradite to India terrorists hiding in that country. In a statement here, Mr Bitta demanded an investigation on many terrorists from Manipur, Assam, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir could have taken shelter in Canada on forged passports/identification under Canadas liberal laws. Strongly condemning the killing of Mr Tara Singh Haer, editor of an Indo-Canadian newspaper in Canada recently, Mr Bitta said various Gurudwaras in Canada were virtually under the control of Sikhs promoting Khalistan and funds collected were diverted to terrorist organisations. These funds were used to buy RDX, PTN, arms and ammunition and deadly explosives to revive terrorism in India. Mr Bitta, who has survived many terrorist attacks, said there were more global terrorist organisations active in Canada than in any other country of the world. He said more than 50 extremist organisations who were using Canada as their operating base, were currently being investigated by the Canadian Government. This decision of the Canadian Government should have, therefore, been taken much earlier. He said that now the impact of terrorism was being felt all over the world and a fresh political thinking was required to create a world free of terrorism. Mr Bitta, former President of the Youth Congress, said attempts were again being made to assassinate prominent leaders and spread terrorism in India after the assassinations of former Prime Ministers Mrs Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi and former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh. (UNI) HC restrains CPI, CPI-M from observing Bihar bandh today PATNA, Dec 10: Patna High Court today restrained the CPI, the CPI (M) and five other political parties from observing bandh in Bihar tomorrow, saying a bandh infringed upon the fundamental rights guaranteed under the constitution. The court also directed the Bihar Government to deploy adequate forces in the state tomorrow to maintain law and order. The direction was given by the division bench comprising Chief Justice B M Lal and Mr Justice S K Singh on a public interest petition filed by a social activist Ram Prasad Singh. The bench, after hearing the counsel for the petitioner and the state, held that prima facie political parties had no right to call or enforce a bandh which infringed upon the fundamental rights. The court also referred the Apex Courts ruling in the CPI (M) versus Bharat Kumar case prohibiting a bandh. The court issued show cause notices to all the respondent political parties. (UNI) |

Uproar in Orissa Assembly over summons to JD member BHUBANESWAR, Dec 10: The Orissa Assembly today witnessed uproarious scenes over the summons issued to a Janata Dal MLA by a local executive magistrate to appear before him for violating orders under Section 144 of CRPC. Both opposition and treasury bench members strongly objected to the notice issued to MLA Surendranath Naik, while leader of the JD Legislature Party, Narasingha Mishra, said it amounted to gross breach of privilege. The members sought a ruling on the matter from Speaker Chintamani Dyansamantara, who assured the members that he would advised the member not to present himself before the magistrate during the day as per the directive. Mishra, raising the issue during zero hour, alleged Government officers had started taking the house for granted. Naik, who had launched a fast unto death demanding withdrawal of the hike in power tariff and water cess on December 7, was asked by the Speaker to shift out of the Assembly premises. The member then sat on fast for a day in front of the Assembly gate on Sachivalaya Marg where orders under Section 144 of the CRPC had been promulgated in view of the ongoing Winter session of the house. Mishra objected to the executive magistrate issuing the directive when he was not empowered to do so. If the order was violated, which I do not think had happened, the magistrate should have complained before the judicial magistre about the violation of his order, he said, adding the power to summon was vested in the judicial magistrate. Arun Dey (Ind) said the magistrate should not have issued the summons when the house was in session. Reminding the Speaker that Naik had shifted outside the Assembly premise on his advice, Balgopal Mishra (Ind) wanted to know what prevented the authorities to arrest Naik when he was on fast violating the law. While Ganeswar Behera (Cong) suggested the matter, which was serious, should be referred to the privilege committee, Nalinikanta Mohanty (JD) demanded the magistrate should be summoned to the house and reprimanded. JD member Ashok Das said the officer should be suspended. We will not allow the house to function, he said. Prafulla Chandra Ghadei (JD) pointed out that the notice for violation of law should not have been served on Naik since he was sitting on fast alone. It should have been directed at other MLAs and partymen who surrounded him, he said. (PTI) |
Severe security check up in HC following bomb hoax NEW DELHI, Dec 10: A Massive security check was conducted in Delhi High Court today, without proceedings being disturbed, following a telephone call that three bombs have been planted in the court building. The call turned out to be a hoax. Even as cases were being argued, dog squads and personnel of the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) swept the court rooms and the administrative wing. Surprisingly, the lawyers who were busy discussing their cases could not realise that a security check was on. According to police, an anonymous caller rang up the Control Room early in the morning from a Public Call Booth (PCO). Immediately, all services were rushed to the high court. Two fire tenders, two Central Accident Trauma Services (CATS) ambulances, four PCR vans and a large number of BDS staff were deployed for the job. Later, senior Delhi Police officials also reached the spot. Police said, the PCO from where the call was made has been identified, but the caller could not be traced. (UNI) |
