11th State Volleyball Champ
Jammu outplays Kathua in inaugural match

JAMMU, Dec 8: Jammu district outplayed Kathua 3-1 in the opening league match of 11th Jammu and Kashmir State Volleyball Championship (men and women) which begun at GGM Science College grounds, here today.

The championship was inaugurated by the Principal, GGM Science College, Prof Vijay Parkash Gupta, while Mr G R Beig, Administrative Officer, J&K Sports Council presided over the function.

Around 200 players of eleven teams from different districts of the state are participating in the championship including JKAP. The championship is being organised under the auspicious of J&K State Sports Council.

In the opening match, Neelam Singh, Raj Kumar and Jagdish of Jammu district played an excellent game, while Bharat Bhushan of district Kathua gave gallant fight before they lost the match.

The second match was played between district Srinagar and Pulwama. Srinagar won the match in straight sets of 3-0. District Udhampur also won its first league match defeating Baramullah 3-0.

In another match, Rajouri district down district Budgam 3-0.

The score: Jammu bt Kathua 15-5, 10-15, 15-4, 15-5; Srinagar bt Pulwama 15-5, 15-6, 15-9; Udhampur bt Baramullah 15-12, 15-9, 15-4; Rajouri bt Budgam 15-5, 15-11, 15-8.

In another match, Kamal Kant Khanna also made his entry into the Snooker quarter-finals beating Ramesh Koul 3-1, while Sanjeev Gupta beat Ankur Mahajan 3-1.

Young Stars enter final

JAMMU, Dec 8: Young Stars entered the finals of Ist Sher-e-Kashmir Football Cup Tournament defeating Kadian XI by a solitary goal in the first semi-final played at Mini Stadium here today.

Both the teams fought each other till the only game of the match came in the 87th minutes of the match. Kadian XI which dominated the field in the last 20 minutes of the match got a gold chance when referee awarded a plenty kick in the 82nd minutes of the match.

But Young Stars’ goalkeeper, Sonu Kumar Sawhney stop the free kick by George Masih and foiled the attempt turning the match to its existing position. Now, it was Young Stars turn, who made their solitary goal in the dieing minutes of the match. The only goal was made by Shabir Ahmed, who succeeded in his plan after making two attempts at the same place.

Two yellow cards were shown by the referee to Baljeet Singh of Kadian XI and Manzoor and Sanjay Manhas of Young Stars.

Earlier, Kadian XI had to play with Jammu and Kashmir Bank in the second semi-final but all of a sudden after a protest from Kadian Club the fixture was changed. However, the Kadians could not get benefit of change in the match fixture and lost to Young Stars in the first semi-finals today.

Mr Charanjeet Singh Wazir, veteran footballer was the guest of honour in the match.

Maqsood leads Poonch College victory over DC Kishtwar

JAMMU: Fine all-round performance by Maqsood Ahmed help Degree College Poonch to beat Degree College Kishtwar by 162 runs in Pool ‘A’ match in the Inter-College Cricket Tournament being played at Jammu University ground, here today.

Maqsood earlier scored 66 runs facing just 53 balls with the help of one six and three boundaries and later clinched four important wickets for Poonch College.

After winning the toss, Poonch scored 254 runs for the loss of eight wickets in stipulated quota of 40 overs. Prithpal Singh scored brilliant 85 runs, while Asif contributed 39 runs hitting two huge sixes and two boundaries.

Chasing the target of over six runs per over, Kishtwar College could not reach the century mark and lost all its wickets for 92 runs in 19.5 overs. Opener Sajid was run out when he playing a good innings at 15 including three boundaries. While, Arshad and Maqsood were the other two highest scorer with 19 and 12 runs respectively.

Khan inaugurates cricket bat manufacturing unit

JAMMU, Dec 8: The Chairman Jammu and Kashmir Bank, Mr M Y Khan inaugurated a Cricket Bats Manufacturing Unit at Miransahib in R S Pura tehsil of Jammu district here this morning. The unit has been established by a young enterpreneurs M/s Sunil Sports at a cost of Rs 8 lakh under Special Employment Centrally Sponosred Scheme of the Khadi and Village Industries Board. The unit will provide employment to 22 persons of the area at its initial stage.

The Chairman, Khadi and Village Industries Board, Mr G N Naik who was the chief guest presented a cheque of Rs 2.40 lakh as margin money to the Chairman, Jammu and Kashmir Bank on the occasion.

Speaking at the function, Mr Naik said that under this scheme 150 cases were sanctioned and sponsored to various banks during the first eight months of the current financial year. He said currently 72 schemes falls under the Board and are meant for the rural artisans. He appealed the educated unemployed youth to come forward and avail the benefis from these schemes rather than hankering after Government jobs.

Mr Naik revealed that the Union Government has agreed to provide more funds under this scheme for the upliftment of socio-economic standard of the people living below the poverty line. He said two districts of ths State viz Jammu and Anantnag have been brought under the ambit of this scheme in the first phase and the other districts will be covered on priority basis. He asked the functionaries of the concerned agencies to speed up the activities and work with zeal and dedication so that the benefit of the scheme reaches to the poor masses.

The function among others was attended by Mr Ram Chand Bhagat, MLA, R S Pura, Mr R L Sharma, Divisional Officer KVIB, General Manager, J&K Bank, Mr Mushtaq, Dy General Manager, Mr Ajit Singh and prominent citizens of the area.

BANGKOK, Dec 8: Middleweight puncher Jitender Kumar provided the best moment of the day for India in the Asian Games when he stopped 1992 Barcelona bronze medallist Ri Hum-Chol of North Korea in the first round today.

The 22-year-old Haryana fighter, a silver medallist in the September Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games, opened up a cut under the left eye of his rival with his ferocious assault and was comfortably ahead 16-2 when the boxing bout was stopped to save the Korean from further punishment.

The superb display by Jitender came late in the day along with the women’s hockey squad’s 13-0 thumping of hosts Thailand in their league opener to help India end the day on a much brighter note after a string of disappointing results earlier.

Manjinder Kaur (3), skipper Pritam Rani (3), Kamla Dalal (2), Jyoti Kullu (2), Sita Gussein (1), Suraj Lata (1) and Surinder Kaur (1) were the scorers in the Indian goal-spree.

Indian men’s tennis players, canoeist Vaga Ram and O K Dinghy sailor Gautam Dutta provided the few bright spots for India before Jitender Kumar’s and the women’s hockey squad’s excellent display.

India swamped Qatar 3-0 even without the services of their star Davis Cup duo, Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi, in the first round of men’s tennis.

Canoeist Vaga Ram finished third in his preliminary heats timing five minutes 24 seconds and then qualified for the final by claiming the second place in the first semifinal by returning 4:25.27. (PTI)

India on 4th place in equestrian competition

BANGKOK, Dec 8: India were trailing at the fourth place in the five-team field at the end of the opening day of the three-day equestrian competition in the 13th Asian Games here today.

In the dressage test which was held today, the Indian quartet of Imtiaz Anees, Amolkit Singh, Rajesh Pattu and Palwinder Singh aggregated 211.60 points for the fourth slot.

The leader in the field was Japan with 149.60 points, followed by host Thailand 171.40 points and Korea with 197.20 points. Malaysia were the last with 218.00 points.

In the individual dressage test, Imtiaz Anees riding ‘Mirza’ collected 67.20 penalty points, Amolkjit Singh astride ‘Samrat’ earned 68.00 points but it was Rajesh Pattu on ‘Ringo’ who gave a rather dismal display and could not control his horse and conceded 88.2 penalty points. Palwinder Singh on ‘Nector’ also fared rather poorly and garnered 76.40 penalty points.

The total individual points are counted and make up for the team’s total tally.

But for the poor showing of Rajesh Pattu and Palwinder Singh, India would have finished third. The best performance of the day came from Japan’s Sachko Kodra who riding on ‘Stars De Riols’ conceding the minimum 45 penalty points.

Tomorrow the Indians will figure in the endurance event and December 10th show jumping will be held at the total points of all the three events will be calculated to decide the medal winners. (UNI)

Bell to make test debut against India

WELLINGTON, Dec 8: Opening batsman Matthew Bell will make his test debut for New Zealand in the first cricket test against India starting at Carisbrook, Dunedin on December 18.

Bell, 21, was today included in New Zealand’s largely predictable twelve-man squad for the opening game in the three-match test series.

Bell, of Wellington, takes over from Bryan Young, who has struggled for form after returning home as the incumbent following New Zealand’s last tour of Sri Lanka in July.

SER upsets CLW

KAPURTHALA, Dec 8: South Eastern Railway (SER), Calcutta upset defending champion Chittranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) 1-0 on the second day of 59th All India Railway Men’s Hockey Championship being played at Rail Coach Factory here today.

SER and CLW played evenly and tried to dominate each other but could not score in the first half.

On resumption, SER displayed better hockey and through centre-forward R.Mini scored a beautiful field goal in the 42nd minute (1-0). In the dying minutes of the game CLW tried hard to equalise and wasted two penalty corners.

In the second match of the day, Western Railway (WR), Mumbai routed Wheel and Axleilant, Bangalore 6-0 in a one-sided affair.

Centre-forward Mukhtiar Singh scored four goals including the tournament’s first hat-trick, while Deepak Gupta and Shanta Kumar chipped in a goal each for the winners.

In a keenly-contested third match, Eastern Railway, Calcutta (ER) beat South Central Railway, Secunderabad (SCR) by 2-1. Eastern Railway got the lead in the 12th minute when left-out P.Ekka scored a brilliant goal by an angular shot (1-0). SCR eqalised through left-in Paul Moses (1-1). ER earned a penalty corner in 28th minute and right-back A.K. Singh made no mistake (2-1).

In the fourth match, Central Railway, Mumbai thrashed Southern Railway, Chennai 5-0 in a one sided match. (UNI)
