tourney concludes

Dec 8:
A two-day volleyball tournament concluded here
today. Six teams drawn from rural areas of
Bufliaz, Draba, Fasilabad, Surankote, Potha,
Sanai and Lassana participated.
The Sector
Commander of Rashtriya Rifle distributed prizes
among the winners and runner ups.
Boxer
brings cheer for India
BANGKOK,
Dec 8:
Middleweight puncher Jitender Kumar provided the
best moment of the day for India in the Asian
Games when he stopped 1992 Barcelona bronze
medallist Ri Hum-Chol of North Korea in the first
round today.
The 22-year-old
Haryana fighter, a silver medallist in the
September Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games, opened
up a cut under the left eye of his rival with his
ferocious assault and was comfortably ahead 16-2
when the boxing bout was stopped to save the
Korean from further punishment.
The superb display
by Jitender came late in the day along with the
womens hockey squads 13-0 thumping of
hosts Thailand in their league opener to help
India end the day on a much brighter note after a
string of disappointing results earlier.
Manjinder Kaur
(3), skipper Pritam Rani (3), Kamla Dalal (2),
Jyoti Kullu (2), Sita Gussein (1), Suraj Lata (1)
and Surinder Kaur (1) were the scorers in the
Indian goal-spree.
Indian mens
tennis players, canoeist Vaga Ram and O K Dinghy
sailor Gautam Dutta provided the few bright spots
for India before Jitender Kumars and the
womens hockey squads excellent
display.
India swamped
Qatar 3-0 even without the services of their star
Davis Cup duo, Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi,
in the first round of mens tennis.
Canoeist Vaga Ram
finished third in his preliminary heats timing
five minutes 24 seconds and then qualified for
the final by claiming the second place in the
first semifinal by returning 4:25.27. (PTI)
India on
4th place in equestrian competition
BANGKOK,
Dec 8:
India were trailing at the fourth place in the
five-team field at the end of the opening day of
the three-day equestrian competition in the 13th
Asian Games here today.
In the dressage
test which was held today, the Indian quartet of
Imtiaz Anees, Amolkit Singh, Rajesh Pattu and
Palwinder Singh aggregated 211.60 points for the
fourth slot.
The leader in the
field was Japan with 149.60 points, followed by
host Thailand 171.40 points and Korea with 197.20
points. Malaysia were the last with 218.00
points.
In the individual
dressage test, Imtiaz Anees riding
Mirza collected 67.20 penalty points,
Amolkjit Singh astride Samrat earned
68.00 points but it was Rajesh Pattu on
Ringo who gave a rather dismal
display and could not control his horse and
conceded 88.2 penalty points. Palwinder Singh on
Nector also fared rather poorly and
garnered 76.40 penalty points.
The total
individual points are counted and make up for the
teams total tally.
But for the poor
showing of Rajesh Pattu and Palwinder Singh,
India would have finished third. The best
performance of the day came from Japans
Sachko Kodra who riding on Stars De
Riols conceding the minimum 45 penalty
points.
Tomorrow the
Indians will figure in the endurance event and
December 10th show jumping will be held at the
total points of all the three events will be
calculated to decide the medal winners. (UNI)
Bell to
make test debut against India
WELLINGTON,
Dec 8:
Opening batsman Matthew Bell will make his test
debut for New Zealand in the first cricket test
against India starting at Carisbrook, Dunedin on
December 18.
Bell, 21, was
today included in New Zealands largely
predictable twelve-man squad for the opening game
in the three-match test series.
Bell, of
Wellington, takes over from Bryan Young, who has
struggled for form after returning home as the
incumbent following New Zealands last tour
of Sri Lanka in July.

SER
upsets CLW
KAPURTHALA,
Dec 8:
South Eastern Railway (SER), Calcutta upset
defending champion Chittranjan Locomotive Works
(CLW) 1-0 on the second day of 59th All India
Railway Mens Hockey Championship being
played at Rail Coach Factory here today.
SER and CLW played
evenly and tried to dominate each other but could
not score in the first half.
On resumption, SER
displayed better hockey and through
centre-forward R.Mini scored a beautiful field
goal in the 42nd minute (1-0). In the dying
minutes of the game CLW tried hard to equalise
and wasted two penalty corners.
In the second
match of the day, Western Railway (WR), Mumbai
routed Wheel and Axleilant, Bangalore 6-0 in a
one-sided affair.
Centre-forward
Mukhtiar Singh scored four goals including the
tournaments first hat-trick, while Deepak
Gupta and Shanta Kumar chipped in a goal each for
the winners.
In a
keenly-contested third match, Eastern Railway,
Calcutta (ER) beat South Central Railway,
Secunderabad (SCR) by 2-1. Eastern Railway got
the lead in the 12th minute when left-out P.Ekka
scored a brilliant goal by an angular shot (1-0).
SCR eqalised through left-in Paul Moses (1-1). ER
earned a penalty corner in 28th minute and
right-back A.K. Singh made no mistake (2-1).
In the fourth
match, Central Railway, Mumbai thrashed Southern
Railway, Chennai 5-0 in a one sided match. (UNI)
