JAMMU, Nov 30: The Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah has urged the electronic media to expand its reach and cater to the needs of the people living in far-flung areas.

Speaking at a concluding function of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Radio Kashmir Jammu here this evening, the Chief Minister said, Radio has wider range than TV and it should shoulder its responsibilities to promote and propagate various languages like Gujri, Punjabi, Dogri, Kashmiri and Pahari.

The Chief Minister hoped that the FM service launched in Jammu will one day continue round the clock as in the West.

Referring to the promotion of art and culture in the State, Dr Abdullah said the Cultural Academy is setting up recording studios in Srinagar and Jammu. These will immensely help to give boost to the talent of the State whose voice can be preserved and presented through discs and tapes. He said, the artists of the State have a challenge to complete with artists of the country and they need such facilities. He asked the radio to provide much needed opportunities to the artists so that they can present their talent in a batter way. He said it is heartening that the Radio Kashmir Jammu is celebrating Golden Jubilee of Primary Service and Silver Jubilee of the youth service same year.

Earlier, the Chief Minister honoured several distinguished personalities who have contributed for the better service of Radio Kashmir Jammu. These honoured personalities include Mr M D Mengi, Mr Ved Bhasin, Mr Balraj Puri, Prof Madan Mohan Sharma, Mr Pushkar Nath, Mr N D Jamwal, Prof Santosh Sharma, Mr Arash Sehbai, Mr Deedar Singh, Mr Ghulam Mohd, Mrs Bimla Devi, Mr Parkash Sharma and Mr S N Wakhlu.

The Chief Minister also released a Souvenir on the occasion. He inaugurated the programme by lighting the traditional lamp.

The Station Director, Radio Kashmir Jammu, Dr Ashok Jerath gave the resume of activities undertaken during the year. The main highlight of the programme was flute recital by eminent Rajendra Prasana.

The function was the culmination of the year-long celebrations of the Golden Jubilee of the Radio Station, Jammu and Silver Jubilee year of the Yuv Vani service. It started with Saraswati Vandana by the artists of Radio Station and lighting of traditional lamp by the Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah.

There was also Sehnae Vadan and popular folk singers Ghulam Mohammad Dhansalia and party sang bhajans. The programme’s main attraction was the performance of renowned Flute artist Mr Rajinder Prasana with Mr Rashid Mustafa on the Tabla regalled the audience. The classical and pahari tunes on the flute were applauded by all present in the hall.

Ajatshatru assures basic amenities to people

JAMMU, Nov 30: The Information, Science and Technology Minister, Mr Ajatshatru Singh has reiterated the Government's resolve to provide basic amenities to the people of the State within a minimum possible time.

The Minister was addressed a public meeting at Dabbar Mehra Gujjar basti, in Balwal Block 35 kms from Jammu today.

The Minister said that the Government was fully aware of the problems being faced by the people of kandi belts especially residing on high altitudes and drought prone areas. He said survey for the construction of a tube well for Dabbar Kandi area will be conducted shortly for ensuring potable supply of water to the people. He said the rought road constructed by the Rural Development Department upto Dabbar Mehra is being handed over to the PWD for its upgradation, Mr Singh assured that opening of new primary school as well as upgradation of existing schools in the area will be discussed during next meeting of the District Development Board, Jammu. He said a Women Welfare Centre will also be opened in the area for imparting training in various handicrafts besides initiating measures for betterment of the women folk in the area.

Mr Singh is the first Minister who visited this backward Gujjar and Harijan basti situated above the river Chenab.

The Member Legislative Council, Ch Mohammad Hussain and Ch Barkat Ali, National Conference worker while addressing the meeting demanded opening of a Health Sub-Centre and release of money against works done last year under various Rural Development Schemes.

Besides, officers of the PHE, PWD and Rural Development Department, the Minister was accompanied by the District Development Commissioner, Jammu, Mr Tripathi.

Later, the Minister visited the house of a NC worker, who passed away recently and expressed his heartfelt sympathies with the members of the bereaved family.

BSF celebrates 33rd Raising Day

JAMMU, Nov 30: Border Security Force has completed 33 years of its existance since its inception on 1 Dec 1965. As world's largest Para Military Force, BSF which actively fought during 1971 Indo-Pak war has contributed in big way in combating terrorism and insurgency in J&K and North Eastern States besides guarding the border on Western and Eastern regions.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr UC Chhabra, IG BSF Jammu Ftr stated that the Frontier has performed commendably and withstood the challenges on the border as well as in the militancy infested areas effectively. Several attempts of Pak to push in ANEs from across Jammu border and LC were foiled. During the past one year 90 infiltrators were shot dead while 938 smugglers/saboturs and other anti-national elements were apprehended. 24 BSF personal sacrificed their lives in countering insurgency and 42 bordermen received injuries.

Concerted efforts of BSF with Pakistan Rangers have brought peace all along 187.5 kms long Jammu border and harvesting as well as sowing is in full swing right upto the IB. The includes about 30 percent of additional land which remained uncultivated due to heavy unprovoked firing of Pakistanis during last three years.

Giving details, Mr Chhabra, said that BSF troops during the past one year had recovered 80 sophisticated arms including AK Rifles - 45 Nos, UMG - 01 No, Pistol - 34 Nos, Hand grenade - 147 Nos and large quantity of explosives and amns.

Touching about co-ordination with other security agencies, Mr Chhabra stated that BSF had excellent co-ordination and co-operation with State Police, Army, RR and other sister agencies and several joint operations have been conducted on the information made available through BSF Intelligence channels as well as sister agencies which yielded excellent results.

Touching upon the civic actions, IG BSF mentioned that BSF is people's friendly force and has human approach. BSF organised medical camps in remote border villages, distributed study and play material among school going children besides developing confidence, creating co-operation, sense of oneness and harmony with locals of the border belt.

JAMMU, Nov 30: A group of 28 school children, hailing from rural and remote areas of Kashmir valley, on two weeks tour to Punjab State christened as ‘Aman Yatra’ left for Jalandhar from here, today.

During their halt at Jammu, the Tiger Division of the Army organised their visits to places of historical interests and entertainment like Amar Singh Palace, Bagh-e-Bahu Children Park, Radio Station and Doordarshan Kendra. The children also paid tributes at the War Memorial at Satwari Cantonment.

A volleyball match was also held to inculcate in them the spirit of competition. Three teachers accompanying the students, said that they were all praise for the Army hospitality and also for organising such tours for children to visit other parts of country and to acquaint them with the vastness of the country and rich cultural traditions and unity in diversity. The students will also be taken to Golden Temple in Amritsar, besides other places of historical interests.

The tour, which is sponsored entirely by the Army, other than adding to their education and broadening their horizon, the boys will see for themselves the situation in other parts of the country vis-a-vis Kashmir and thus their desire to join the national main stream will be enhanced.

Coal reserves found at Baryal Ransoo

JAMMU, Nov 30: Rich reserves of high quality coal have been found at Baryal Ransoo in Udhampur district. Enriched with 80 per cent carbon, the coal carries just five per cent ash.

Presenting the sample of coal and other mineral resources extracted in the area to the Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah here this morning, the Minister for Industries and Commerce, Mr Bodh Raj Bali said that as per preliminary investigations about 25,000 Metric Tonnes of coal is available in a limited area which may go up after a detailed exploration is undertaken. Samples of Bauxite and high grade lime stone were also presented to the Chief Minister.

The Additional Chief Secretary, Industries and Commerce, Mr Mohammad Shafi Pandit was present on the occasion.

The exploration, investigation and analysis of the mineral resources at Baryal have been conducted by the JK Minerals (JKM) in collaboration with the Regional Research Laboratory, Jammu. The coal tested in the area is best in the State, according to the Managing Director Jammu and Kashmir Minerals Ltd, Mr Abdul Ahad.

Expressing his happiness over the coal found at yet another place in the State, the Chief Minister asked for expeditious exploration by the Coal India and other central agencies. He urged the Industries Minister to take up the issue with all concerned earnestly for the purpose. He congratulated the JK Minerals for successful investigation and exploration of coal, bauxite and limestone at Baryal.

Mr Abdul Ahad said, the site at Baryal would be got included for exploration in next years' programme by the concerned agencies in its meeting slated in February next. These agencies have agreed to conduct further investigation and exploration. He said, Baryal is another area after Kalakote which is enriched with coal.

JAMMU, Nov 30: The Cine Arts—a local film unit has distributed prizes among the dancer and singers, who have excelled in a musical programme "Ham Se Hai Zamana " to be telecast on the Doordarshan Jammu from tomorrow.

The unit has also honoured a number of persons, who have contributed in the successful production of the programme.

The programme which has been made to boost the hidden latent of young generation has got hectic response from the various educational institutions and music clubs of Jammu, said Mr Sunil Koul, one of the producers of the series.

Programme has a variety show including solo and group dances besides song competitions among the young budding artists of Jammu.

The producers of the series, Messrs. J R Ahuja, Sham Sharma, Vinod Pandita and Sunil Koul on behalf of Cine Arts extended their heartiest gratitude to all the participants, sponsors, especially to Mr P N Pandita, Mr Arun Bakshi, Mr Madan Rangeela, Naresh Bali and Ravi Sawhney.

The main theme of the programme was to give exposure to the young budding artists of Jammu.

Chenab Cultural Sangum redesignated

JAMMU, Nov 30: Chenab Cultural Sangum was re-designated as "Koushar Markazi Forum Jammu’ in a meeting held under the chairmanship of eminent veteran Kashmiri poet Bashir Bhaderwahi and new office bearers were elected after dissolution of the old committee.

As per a release, this action was taken to broaden the dimensions and areas of activities of the Forum and providing adequate representation to Kashmiri writers residing in various parts of Jammu province. The gathering expressed its serious concern over indifferent attitude of the semi-Government organisations like Television and Radio towards Kashmiri writers of Jammu division.

It was decided to launch struggle to get conceded long pending demands which included opening of Kashmiri Department in Jammu University, establishment of Kashmiri wing in Cultural Academy Jammu for development and promotion of Kashmiri language, introduction of Kashmiri language in the educational institutions of Kashmiri speaking areas as a compulsory subject, due representation to Jammu division Kashmiri writers in the general council, offices and other branches of J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, sanctioning of special subsidies to new publications, providing special monetary assistance to published Kashmiri works, purchase of published books by the Central and State Governments, enhancement of timings of Kashmiri Programmes by Jammu TV and Radio, preservation of folk literature and development of artistic skills like calligraphy, enhancement of annual grant-in-aid to the literary organisations, to press for maximum representation of Kashmiri writers of Jammu region in the Central and State and divisional level programmes on TV and radio, strengthening and upgradation of Jammu, Doda and Rajouri sub- offices of Cultural Academy besides preparation of objective oriented action plans, introduction of family pension scheme for families of deceased and poor writers and artists and struggle for unity among the various literary organisations.

The meeting also elected new office bearers besides nomination of a 20 member working committee.
