CM for greater role of electronic media Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 30: The Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah has urged the electronic media to expand its reach and cater to the needs of the people living in far-flung areas. Speaking at a concluding function of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Radio Kashmir Jammu here this evening, the Chief Minister said, Radio has wider range than TV and it should shoulder its responsibilities to promote and propagate various languages like Gujri, Punjabi, Dogri, Kashmiri and Pahari. The Chief Minister hoped that the FM service launched in Jammu will one day continue round the clock as in the West. Referring to the promotion of art and culture in the State, Dr Abdullah said the Cultural Academy is setting up recording studios in Srinagar and Jammu. These will immensely help to give boost to the talent of the State whose voice can be preserved and presented through discs and tapes. He said, the artists of the State have a challenge to complete with artists of the country and they need such facilities. He asked the radio to provide much needed opportunities to the artists so that they can present their talent in a batter way. He said it is heartening that the Radio Kashmir Jammu is celebrating Golden Jubilee of Primary Service and Silver Jubilee of the youth service same year. Earlier, the Chief Minister honoured several distinguished personalities who have contributed for the better service of Radio Kashmir Jammu. These honoured personalities include Mr M D Mengi, Mr Ved Bhasin, Mr Balraj Puri, Prof Madan Mohan Sharma, Mr Pushkar Nath, Mr N D Jamwal, Prof Santosh Sharma, Mr Arash Sehbai, Mr Deedar Singh, Mr Ghulam Mohd, Mrs Bimla Devi, Mr Parkash Sharma and Mr S N Wakhlu. The Chief Minister also released a Souvenir on the occasion. He inaugurated the programme by lighting the traditional lamp. The Station Director, Radio Kashmir Jammu, Dr Ashok Jerath gave the resume of activities undertaken during the year. The main highlight of the programme was flute recital by eminent Rajendra Prasana. The function was the culmination of the year-long celebrations of the Golden Jubilee of the Radio Station, Jammu and Silver Jubilee year of the Yuv Vani service. It started with Saraswati Vandana by the artists of Radio Station and lighting of traditional lamp by the Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah. There was also Sehnae Vadan and popular folk singers Ghulam Mohammad Dhansalia and party sang bhajans. The programmes main attraction was the performance of renowned Flute artist Mr Rajinder Prasana with Mr Rashid Mustafa on the Tabla regalled the audience. The classical and pahari tunes on the flute were applauded by all present in the hall. |
Ajatshatru assures basic amenities to people Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 30: The Information, Science and Technology Minister, Mr Ajatshatru Singh has reiterated the Government's resolve to provide basic amenities to the people of the State within a minimum possible time. The Minister was addressed a public meeting at Dabbar Mehra Gujjar basti, in Balwal Block 35 kms from Jammu today. The Minister said that the Government was fully aware of the problems being faced by the people of kandi belts especially residing on high altitudes and drought prone areas. He said survey for the construction of a tube well for Dabbar Kandi area will be conducted shortly for ensuring potable supply of water to the people. He said the rought road constructed by the Rural Development Department upto Dabbar Mehra is being handed over to the PWD for its upgradation, Mr Singh assured that opening of new primary school as well as upgradation of existing schools in the area will be discussed during next meeting of the District Development Board, Jammu. He said a Women Welfare Centre will also be opened in the area for imparting training in various handicrafts besides initiating measures for betterment of the women folk in the area. Mr Singh is the first Minister who visited this backward Gujjar and Harijan basti situated above the river Chenab. The Member Legislative Council, Ch Mohammad Hussain and Ch Barkat Ali, National Conference worker while addressing the meeting demanded opening of a Health Sub-Centre and release of money against works done last year under various Rural Development Schemes. Besides, officers of the PHE, PWD and Rural Development Department, the Minister was accompanied by the District Development Commissioner, Jammu, Mr Tripathi. Later, the Minister visited the house of a NC worker, who passed away recently and expressed his heartfelt sympathies with the members of the bereaved family. |
BSF celebrates 33rd Raising Day Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 30: Border Security Force has completed 33 years of its existance since its inception on 1 Dec 1965. As world's largest Para Military Force, BSF which actively fought during 1971 Indo-Pak war has contributed in big way in combating terrorism and insurgency in J&K and North Eastern States besides guarding the border on Western and Eastern regions. Speaking on the occasion, Mr UC Chhabra, IG BSF Jammu Ftr stated that the Frontier has performed commendably and withstood the challenges on the border as well as in the militancy infested areas effectively. Several attempts of Pak to push in ANEs from across Jammu border and LC were foiled. During the past one year 90 infiltrators were shot dead while 938 smugglers/saboturs and other anti-national elements were apprehended. 24 BSF personal sacrificed their lives in countering insurgency and 42 bordermen received injuries. Concerted efforts of BSF with Pakistan Rangers have brought peace all along 187.5 kms long Jammu border and harvesting as well as sowing is in full swing right upto the IB. The includes about 30 percent of additional land which remained uncultivated due to heavy unprovoked firing of Pakistanis during last three years. Giving details, Mr Chhabra, said that BSF troops during the past one year had recovered 80 sophisticated arms including AK Rifles - 45 Nos, UMG - 01 No, Pistol - 34 Nos, Hand grenade - 147 Nos and large quantity of explosives and amns. Touching about co-ordination with other security agencies, Mr Chhabra stated that BSF had excellent co-ordination and co-operation with State Police, Army, RR and other sister agencies and several joint operations have been conducted on the information made available through BSF Intelligence channels as well as sister agencies which yielded excellent results. Touching upon the civic actions, IG BSF mentioned that BSF is people's friendly force and has human approach. BSF organised medical camps in remote border villages, distributed study and play material among school going children besides developing confidence, creating co-operation, sense of oneness and harmony with locals of the border belt. |
