8 smugglers held with contraband

Srinagar, Jan 23: Police today said its special team achieved a major success by arresting eight narcotic smugglers, four them involved in cross-LoC narcotic smuggling, in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district along with contraband consignments worth crores of rupees.
The SSP Kupwara, Shamseer Hussain, said that police while continuing with the special drive against drug abuse/sale of psychotropic substances in the district, arrested eight persons in two raids and recovered contraband consignments which include 1.5 kilogram of Brown Sugar, one kilogram of Heroine and 500 grams of Charas from their possession.
He said that initial investigation revealed that four narcotic smugglers who have been arrested from Karnah near zero line of LoC along with contraband consignments used to smuggle narcotic substances from across the LoC and then sell the same at different locations of the country.
The arrested persons from Karnah have been identified as Nisar Ahmad Chokar, Muhammad Khaleeq Sheikh, Ravees Ahmad Sheikh Karnah, and Khayal Ahmed. The SSP has said that link of narco -smugglers with the militancy funding cannot be ruled as the investigation is in initial stage.
He said further revealed that today special team of police also arrested four drug peddlers from Kupwara town and its adjoining areas. He identified them as Muhammad Sadiq, Shabir Ahamd Mir, Abdul Rashid Mir and Ghulam Ahmed Ganie.
“The team has recovered about 500 grams of charas and 500 grams brown sugar from their possession. Cases under NDPS Act have been registered and the investigation is in progress,” the SSP added.
