UDHAMPUR, Jan 15: The Indian Army organized various functions and paid homage to the Martyrs to mark the Army Day celebrations across the region today.
To mark the 71st Army Day, General Officer Commanding, Fire & Fury Corps, Lt Gen YK Joshi laid a wreath at the Leh War Memorial today to pay homage to the martyrs of the Indian Army.
All ranks of Corps and Leh Garrison were present for the solemn ceremony. The General Officer Commanding addressed all present at the ceremony and brought out the importance of Army Day, which is celebrated in recognition of Lieutenant General KM Cariappa, later Field Marshal KM Cariappa, OBE, taking over as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from Sir Francis Butcher on January 15, 1949. A short film “Indian Army – Pride of the Nation” was also screened on the occasion.
Lt Gen JS Nain, General Officer Commanding, Rising Star Corps accompanied by Maj Gen Sharad Kapur, GOC, Tiger Division paid tributes to martyrs at Tiger War Memorial, Satwari in Jammu today to commemorate 71st Indian Army Day.
The celebrations were attended by several serving and retired officers, Junior Commissioned Officers and jawans to pay homage to the brave soldiers who laid down their lives for the country. The ceremony revived proud memories of the supreme sacrifice of gallant soldiers and the indomitable spirit of Indian Army’s superb leadership and synergy.
Rashtriya Rifles units falling under the command of Counter Insurgency Force (Delta) today also celebrated Army Day in Ramban area today.
The main programme in this regard was organised at the headquarters of Counter Insurgency Force (Delta) today.
General Officer Commanding, CIF (D), Maj Gen Rajeev Nanda arranged a party for the local ex-servicemen, Veer Naries (widows of martyrs), mediamen, newly elected local Sarpanches and Panches. After remembering the valour of the martyrs and paying them homage, he also interacted with the guests, listened their grievances and suggestions.
Meanwhile, to commemorate the day, a series of events to include distribution of Solar lamps, lecture on water conservation and Ekta Committee meeting were organised in Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban districts. On this occasion, a wreath laying ceremony was also conducted at the statue of Naib Subedar Chuni Lal, Ashok Chakra, Vir Chakra, Sena Medal at Bhaderwah. Hundreds of locals including Ex Servicemen, Veer Naris, students and youth of the region attended the events.
Army Day was also celebrated by Army Public School, Jammu Cantonment with great zeal and enthusiasm. A special assembly was conducted by the NCC Junior Wing Girl Cadets of the school where in Cadet Chiteralekha and Cadet Harsha spoke on the occasion. Ratna Mallick, Principal of the school spoke on the importance of the day.
