6 yrs RI awarded to narco smuggler

JAMMU, Sept 28: 1st Additional Sessions Judge Jammu M A Chowdhary today awarded six years rigorous imprisonment and fine of Rs 50,000 to a narco smuggler namely Jagroop Singh, son of Babu Singh of Saddar Bazar, Ludhiana, who was arrested on December 2, 2008 along with poppy straw.
After hearing APP Ajay Singh Manhas appearing for the State, the court observed, “drug abuse has became a major problem for the society over the years. The cases against drug peddlers indicate interstate and international drug rackets targeting cross sections of the society including school kids as well”.
“The illicit drugs have a high addiction potential and there is gradual increase in their intake, getting the users dependent on these drugs both physically and psychologically”, the court further said, adding “the deadly menace is required to be checked through strengthening the legal enforcement”.
With these observations, court awarded six years rigorous imprisonment and fine of Rs 50,000 to the accused.
