5 cops, photo journalist hurt during anti-encroachment drive

JAMMU, Dec 4: Five policemen, including three officers, a photo journalist and a JCB operator were among six persons injured in clashes with people during an anti-encroachment drive launched by the Jammu Development Authority (JDA) in Gole Gujral area near here, today.
The JCB of JDA was also damaged by the mob when they tried to demolish a illegal structure raised on JDA land in Gole Gujral area by nomadic Gujjars today.
As the JDA officials along with machinery and police reached the spot the illegal occupants of JDA land assembled there and attacked them.
JDA officials accompanied by police personnel had launched the drive to remove illegal structures constructed by the nomadic Gujjars in Gole Gujral area of Jammu, a police officer said.
As they were removing the encroachment, a large number of members from the Gujjar community, carrying rods, sticks and bricks, attacked the anti-encroachment team, he said. Five policemen, a JCB operator and a photo journalist were injured.
A JDA official said that the leg of JCB operator has been fractured and he was admitted in hospital.
The residents also pelted stones and bricks on the team and the photo journalist covering the drive.
However police has not registered a case against any body and no one has been arrested. The police however made a restraint and it did not use force otherwise the number of injured could have been more and the situation could have taken the critical turn.
