Suspension of work at Besco’s unit in city

KOLKATA, Jan 30:  A suspension of work notice was put up at wagon divison of Besco Ltd’s Ballygunj unit here citing losses incurred due to continous agitation and obstruction of willing workers from joining work by a new faction of workers union.
The worker’s quashed the allegations as ‘baseless’ and accused the company mangament instead of employing regular workers they engaged a contractor to pay low wages.
“The company uses a contractor D S Associates to employ people at Rs 157 a day. We had been demanding since long to look into the wage rates but management never paid any heed to our demands,” an agitating labour union leader said.
“When we demanded to sit at the discussion table, management used pressure tactics like rampant transfers and other methods and now they have closed the unit,” he said.
Workers were seen agitating at the factory gate.
Company director Madhusudan Tantia could not be reached for comments. (PTI)
