Sources said that the number of casualties inflicted on Pakistani troops could be around 20. They said that the four posts were completely destroyed and it was response to the killing of a soldier and mutilation of his body in Macchil sector yesterday.
Residents in Keran sector of the LoC today woke up to heavy mortar shelling between India and Pakistani troops, a day after Army warned appropriate response to the killing and mutilating of body of soldier Mandeep Singh of 17 Sikh Regiment by militants in adjacent Macchil sector.
Army yesterday warned after the killing of Singh that “This act will invite an appropriate response.”
At Keran, a BSF jawan Jagjeet Singh of 21 battalion was critically injured today after their post was hit by a mortar shell. He was removed to hospital for treatment.
Two women Shaheena and Hameeda were also injured in shelling in the area. Several LoC bunkers and residential houses were damaged on both the sides of LoC in Keran sector in the intense border shelling.
A Border Security Force (BSF) personnel and a militant were killed in Macchil sector since yesterday.
The Inspector General of BSF (Kashmir) Vikash Chandra said that a BSF constable Nitin Subhash was injured critically last evening when an explosion inside the chamber of the long range weapon led to a recoil while he was firing in retaliation to ceasefire violation from across the LoC. “Subhash was injured due to recoil and was admitted to a medical facility where he succumbed late last night,” he said.
28-year-old Subhash, hailing from Sangli in Maharashtra, had joined BSF in 2008 and is survived by his wife and two sons aged four years and two years.
Army said that in yesterday’s attack in which one Army jawan was killed in Macchil sector, one militant was also killed by Army as they foiled the infiltration bid. The militants before fleeing back had mutilated the body of the soldier.
In the meantime, Army paid tributes to Mandeep Singh who was killed yesterday at the LoC during wreath laying function at BB Cantt today.
An Army spokesman said here: “Army, in a solemn wreath laying ceremony at BB Cantt, Srinagar today paid homage to this braveheart  who attained martyrdom in Macchil sector yesterday in an operation in which one terrorist was also killed while a group was attempting to infiltrate under cover of fire from Pakistan Army posts.

He is survived by his young wife, serving in Haryana Police, whom he had married only a couple of years back in 2014.
