2 yrs RI to JE in corruption case

SRINAGAR, Aug 29: The Presiding Officer of Court of Additional Special Judge, Anti-Corruption, Kashmir, Jeema Bashir today convicted Altaf Ahmad Chisti, the then Junior Engineer, Mechanical Irrigation Division Sopore and awarded him rigorous imprisonment for a period of two years besides fine of Rs 2,00,000 for the commission of offence punishable under Prevention of Corruption Act.
The case against the then JE was registered with Police Station, Vigilance Organization, Kashmir January 25, 1999 in consequence to a preliminary enquiry during which it was proved that the accused had taken 53 GI Pipes of 4” dia temporary for digging the tubewells in the year 1993 and misappropriated the same.
The value of the misappropriated pipes was worked out at Rs 1.84 lakh. The investigation in the instant case was closed as proved and challan was produced before Court on December 19, 2002.
After about 11 year long trial, the Court has convicted the accused and sent him to Central Jail, Srinagar for undergoing the sentence. The Vigilance Organisation was represented by Syed Sarir Ahmad Andrabi, Senior Prosecuting officer  in the case during final arguments.
