2 militants trapped, grenade attack on CRPF

SRINAGAR, June 20: Two militants of Hizbul Mujahideen were trapped in a Sopore village in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district this evening after security forces launched a cordon and search operation following reports of presence of a group of militants hiding in the village.
Sources said that Army’s 22 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operations Group of Jammu and Kashmir Police, Sopore and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) laid a siege of Pazalpora village in Sopore area this evening.
The operation was launched on a tip off about presence of two militants of Hizbul Mujahideen Gulzar Ahmad and Basit in the village. The security forces have cordoned off the house in which the militants are hiding and are waiting for the assault.
The authorities, in the meanwhile, directed telecom companies except BSNL to shutdown mobile towers in Baramulla and Sopore with immediate effect. The mobile internet services has also been snapped to prevent any protests in the area.
In the meantime, militants this evening fired two UBGL grenades at 180 battalion of CRPF at Tral Babla. However, there was no damage. Security forces immediately launched searches in the area but the militants had fled away.
And in Srinagar, police today recovered arms and ammunition from Old City area of Srinagar. However, no one was arrested.
Sources said that police station Kral Khud recovered one pistol, four pistol magazines and four grenades from Babdemb area of Srinagar. They said that the arms and ammunition were in rusted condition and were stored by militants. However, no one was arrested in this connection. Police have registered a case and investigations are going on.
Sources said the Army and police’s Special Operation Group conducted search operation at Khrewan village near Mir Bazar area of Anantnag district today. However, no militant was arrested during the operation and it was later called off.
Another search operation was conducted at Sheikh Mohalla in Namlabal area of Pampore in Pulwama district this evening. A police official said that the operation was launched by Army and SOG. “The searches are underway and so far no one has been found there,” he said, adding that the situation is under control and there was no one law and order problem.
Meanwhile, clashes broke out at Frestbal area of Pampore between protesters and security forces today. The clashes broke out on the occasion of ‘Chahrum’ of a local militant namely Adil Mushtaq who was killed last week at Kulgam district in an encounter. Police used teargas shells to disperse the stone-throwers but they remained unfazed and continued pelting stones for several hours. No one was reported injured.
Security forces resorted to aerial firing at Churat village of Kulgam district today evening after their vehicle was stoned by youth. Police said that the vehicle developed some snag and stopped midway on road. As some youth spotted the vehicle, they pelted stones on it and to disperse them, the forces opened fire in air, the police added. No loss of life or injury was reported from area.
In the meanwhile, a Special Police Officer (SPO) was beaten to pulp by people at Arampora locality of Ganderbal today. Police said that the SPO namely Riyaz Ahmad had gone to offer prayers at Arampora mosque and when he came out of the mosque, he was thrashed by ‘miscreants’. “The injured cop has suffered fractures and he has been hospitalized at Bone and Joint Hospital Barzulla,” said the police.
