2 Hizb militants killed in Kupwara encounter

SRINAGAR, Aug 2: Two militants of Hizbul Mujahideen involved in the snatching of rifle from the security guard of an MLA were killed in a brief encounter in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district today.
Security forces this afternoon established an ambush in Khumriyal area of Kupwara in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district. The militants opened fire after they were caught in the ambush and, in retaliation, they were killed in a brief encounter.
They were involved in the snatching of rifle from a cop, who was on security duty of former Minister and PDP MLA Haq Khan early this week. Click here to watch video
Police recovered the bodies of the duo along with an AK-47 rifle and an Insas rifle snatched from a cop on Tuesday in Kandhar village in Kupwara district.
Authorities suspended mobile Internet service in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district following the killing of two militants. They said that the step was taken as a “precautionary measure to maintain law and order in the district.”
A police spokesman said: “Two terrorists were today eliminated in Khumriyal area of Northern district of Kupwara. Security forces today in the afternoon had established a naka in the area. While the checking at the Naka point was going on, terrorists fired on the naka party which was retaliated by the alert security forces. In a brief encounter, two terrorists were successfully eliminated by the security forces”.
“The killed terrorists have been identified as Bilal Ahmad Shah, a resident of Shatmuqam and Zahoor Ahmad. They were affiliated with proscribed terror outfit HM. Both the terrorists were involved in several attacks on the security establishments and civilian atrocities in the area. Besides one AK 47 and one INSAS rifle was recovered back from the terrorists, which was yesterday snatched from a policeman in Kandhar area of Kupwara”, the spokesman said.
He said that no collateral damage occurred during the encounter. Police has registered a case and investigation into the matter has been initiated.
In the meantime, militants snatched service rifle from a bank security guard in Anantnag district of South Kashmir today.
Militants overpowered the bank guard and snatched his 12-bore rifle at a branch of Jammu and Kashmir Bank in Brakpora area.
