Srinagar, Jan 13: Twenty shops, two banks and a Post Office were gutted in a devastating fire that broke out here in City Centre on Court Road today.
Reports said that flames and smoke started billowing out of the old Majestic Hotel building at the Court Road area near Lal Chowk and it spread quickly. The fire spread to shops, bank branches and the Post Office housed within the complex.
The fire tenders rushed to the spot and started dousing the flames. However, huge blasts could be heard from the building due to explosion of over a dozen LPG cylinders. The fire tenders prevented from spreading to other buildings in the area. Punjab National Bank, Vijaya Bank and Post Office Court Road and 20 shops were gutted. The loss is said to be in crores of rupees.
A police spokesman said that fire broke out at Court Road Lal Chowk in the jurisdiction of Police Station Maisuma, Srinagar. “The fire engulfed the buildings of Punjab National Bank, Vijaya Bank and Post Office, resulting in damage to all the structures and 20 shops. Fire was brought under control by fire tenders and local police. However, no loss of life or injury was reported in this incident”, the spokesman added.
