19 structures gutted

SRINAGAR, Apr 5: Nineteen structures including two concrete houses were gutted in a massive overnight fire at Kohnakhan Nowpora area of city here.
Deputy Director Fire and Emergency Services, Muhammad Akbar, told Excelsior over phone that at around 12:58 am, they received fire call from Kohakhan and immediately they rushed two fire tenders to the area. He said due to heavy fire, other fire stations were also alerted and in total 9 fire tenders were pressed into service.
“However, there was heavy fire and within no time 17 wooden structures and 2 concrete houses were gutted. But we managed to save other structures,” he said, adding that they faced severe difficulties during firefighting operation as the structures were located in the midst of Dal Lake tributary.
He said that the river station Nehru Park was also pressed into the firefighting operation. He said although there was no loss of life but one local youth fell unconscious and he was rushed to the hospital. “The cause of fire is being ascertained,” the official said. Due to inferno, scores of families have been rendered homeless while property worth crores went up in flames.
