101st Indian Science Congress begins at JU

JAMMU, Feb 3: 101st All India Science Congress began at Jammu University, here today, amidst unprecedented security arrangements in and around the campus.
The five-day mega event was formally inaugurated by  Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh this morning in the presence of a galaxy of  VVIPs,  including Governor N N Vohra, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Union Minister for Science and Technology S Jaipal Reddy, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Dr Farooq Abdullah, Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand, other Ministers of the State Government, Legislators, bureaucrats, top Police officers  and prominent citizens.
More than 8000 delegates from within the country as well as abroad are participating in the Science Congress on the topic ‘Innovations in Science & Technology for Inclusive Development’.  Nobel Laureates Prof Y Lee is among participants  of the event.
In his presidential address during the inaugural session, Prof  R.C  Sobti, General President of Indian Science Congress, highlighted the efficacy and importance of Indian Science Congress for the growth and development of science and technology in the country.
Prof  Mohan Paul Singh Ishar, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu,   thanked all the dignitaries for squeezing their valuable time for the historic occasion and also thanked all the members of the civil society, conveners and members of the various committees, sponsors of the event, faculty staff, scholars and students for their whole hearted support.
Later, the first edition of India Vision 2020 Mega Expo 2014 was inaugurated by Jaipal S Reddy in the presence of Governor  N N  Vohra and Vice-Chancellor Prof  M P S  Ishar.
Large number of national/international delegates including eminent scientists, industry leaders, technocrats, policy makers, entrepreneurs, innovators and academicians were also present on  this occasion.
Various exhibitors will showcase their technologies, innovations, their achievements in implementation of science & technology during the coming days of exhibition. The  organizations, which  are displaying their state of the art technologies and products developed by them in the Mega Expo, include;  Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), Department of Sericulture, Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), Department of Horticulture, Agriculture, Fisheries, Floriculture, J&K State Agri Industries Development Corporation, Horticulture (Planning & Marketing),  Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agriculture Sciences and Technology, Horticulture Produce and Marketing Corporation, CCDU, JKEDA, Centre for Wind Energy, Kedest Tesfagiorgis, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, National Research and Development Council (NRDC), MP Council of Science and Technology etc.
On very first day of the Science Congress, panel discussions and special lectures were held.
In the evening a cultural programme was also organized for the visiting delegates.
Due to the bad weather, the organizers as well as the participating delegates had to face some difficulties in smooth conduct of the events on Monday.
Tomorrow, the former President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam is scheduled to inaugurate the Children Science Congress.
