Crisis over, top Indian cricketers will play in Sri Lanka

KOLKATA, Sept 9: The month long crisis over the ICC sponsorship issue blew over today with Indian Cricket Board deciding to send its top players to the Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka after the International Cricket Council climbed down further and made a compromise offer.

The Indian team will be led by Sourav Ganguly and have all the top stars including Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag, Cricket Board president Jagmohan Dalmiya said after a lengthy worldwide tele-conference with ICC and the participating countries.

The dramatic resolution came after icc agreed to bear all the expenses that may arise out of legal complications flowing from the controversial contract that bars players from advertising for companies that have a clash of interest with the official sponsors.

While the Indian players struck a deal with the ICC, the board had taken a tough posture and had given the players time till 1400 Ist today to sign the contract or be left out of the team for Sri Lanka.

After the players rejected the Board’s ultimatum and conditions, BCCI’s Selection Committee met here and picked a second-string team to be headed by veteran all-rounder Robin Singh but witheld its announcement till the tele-conference was over.

The 14-member team announced by Dalmiya includes Dinesh Mongia, Mohd Kaif, Yuveraj Singh, Ajit Agarkar, Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, V V S Laxman, J P Yadav, Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh.

The players, who were given the two-day ultimatum on Saturday, finalised their strategy last night and sent a letter to the Board President expressing their inability to accept the conditions set by BCCI.

The players said it was not a question of money but one of "principles and integrity".

Following this, Dalmiya issued a brief statement in which he sarcastically referred to the players’ stand on principles and said the Colombo Tournament would be played very much for money.

He also directed the selection committee to go ahead with the job of choosing a second-string team, saying India was "morally and legally bound" to play in mini World Cup in Sri Lanka.

But he kept enough room for manouevre saying that the selected team would not be announced till the ICC concluded its tele-conference.

The details of the latest deal between ICC and BCCI are yet to be made public.

Tracing the day’s developments, Dalmiya said the tele-conference lasted two hours during which the issue of damage claim on the Board was discussed.

He said the Board had taken the unprecedented step of allowing the players to negotiate directly with the ICC and welcomed the outcome of those negotiations.

But surprisingly, Dalmiya said, the ICC came up with a damage claim and the Board had to go to the Working Committee.

"We then decided that only those players who sign the players’ terms will be eligible for selection. This morning, the ICC requested me to postpone the decision of the selection committee.

"But I said since only 72 hours were left for the tournament, let us go ahead with the scheduled meeting but we can withold announcement of the decision taken by the meeting till an agreement is reached between us," Dalmiya said.

Expressing happiness over the new agreement, Dalmiya said a model contract would be sent to the ICC and the redrafted agreement would be received by the Board in a couple of days which the players would sign.

He said any financial consequences arising out of the Champions Trophy would be borne by ICC Development International (IDI), the financial arm of the world governing body.

Dalmiya said the Board stood by its commitment to compensate the players for any claims made on them by their sponsors arising out of bar on personal advertising for 35-days — 18 days during and 17 days after the tournament.

About the 24 players who had signed the ICC agreement, he said the Board appreciated their gesture and would reward them suitably.

Dalmiya said in the world-wide tele-conferencing almost all the Chief Executives of the member countries participated to arrive at the decision to break the deadlock which had threatened the Champions Trophy.

"The things are now settled and we are quite happy at the conclusion", he said.

"Though we have not received anything in black and white now, we understand that terms as agreed upon between the players and the ICC and as decided at the tele-conferencing will reach us by tonight to formalise the entire thing", Dalmiya said, adding that this concession was granted by ICC for Champions Trophy only.

Asked whether he had any discussion with the players today, Dalmiya said he had spoken to skipper Ganguly on Saturday when the Board’s working committee had met in New Delhi.

He said he had a seperate talk with ICC Chief Executive Malcolm Speed after the tele-conference.

The Board President justified his stand of not going to London to speak to the Indian players and said even if he had gone there he could not have offered any concession to the players since it was an ICC contract.

"That is why at the expense of being criticised I allowed the ICC to speak directly to the Indian players", he said.

The team, which concluded its 83-day England tour today, would leave London tomorrow to participate in the Champions Trophy beginning on Thursday. (PTI)

More negotiations would be needed before World Cup

LONDON, Sept 9: Indian captain Sourav Ganguly today said the controversial players’ contracts, as it existed now, would require far more ‘negotiations’ to be set right for the World Cup next year.

Speaking just before the current crisis on sponsorship issue was resolved, Ganguly said, "we don’t know how the agreement is going to be for the World Cup. If it is the same as has been given to us for this (Champions) Trophy, a lot more negotiations would need to be done because there are a lot more sponsors for the World Cup."

The ICC World Cup, cricket’s showpiece event, is due to be held in South Africa next year in February-March.

Ganguly said the players could not sign the ICC contract because that would have amounted to breaking their existing contracts, which is illegal.

"As everyone knows, breaking existing contracts is illegal. That’s what we told ICC. To expect them (the sponsors) to do that (restrain from conflict advertising) for the whole period of time (30 days after the tournament) is pretty difficult," he said.

"Its got to be a give and take policy because we have existing contracts," he said. (PTI)

Dravid rewarded for his herculean efforts
Series undecided as rain forces a drawn
result in fourth test

LONDON, Sept 9: The ‘series-deciding’ fourth cricket test between India and England ended in a draw here today after the fifth and final day’s play was abandoned due to rain.

Not a single ball could be bowled on the final day today due to persistent showers and the four-match series ended in a 1-1 deadlock.

England were 114 without loss in their second innings at close of play yesterday after India were all out for 508 to concede a narrow seven run first innings lead.

England had won the first test at Lord’s by 170 runs while India registered their biggest away victory in the third test at Headingley when they defeated England by an innings and 46 runs.

The 1-1 draw meant India’s long wait for their first series victory outside the sub-continent had been prolonged. India’s previous victory came way back in 1986 in England when Kapil Dev’s team won the series 2-0.

After their sterling performance at Headingley, the Indians had raised hopes of ending the long drought with a win here. However, even without rain, a draw looked the most plausible result after the first innings had consumed more than three and a half days with just a seven-run advantage in favour of England.

Rahul Dravid was declared the man of the match as well as India’s man of the series for his consistent performance. Dravid, who capped his dream run in this series with a career-best 217 in this test, aggregated 602 runs from six innings at an average of 100.33.

Michael Vaughan, who like Dravid completed 600 runs in this series and 1,000 runs this year, was named England’s man of the series.

But despite his batting exploits, which include four centuries this summer, Vaughan said the most memorable moment for him in this series came when he clean bowled Sachin Tendulkar in the third test. "I think getting Sachin out was pretty special," he said. Vaughan had dislodged the off the off-stump of Tendulkar with a brilliant delivery that deceived the batsman in flight and spun in sharply to go between the bat and pads.

Indian captain Sourav Ganguly said his team had "moved up a few steps" during this series. "But we still have to improve. We are still looking for a series victory.

"We batted pretty well throughout this tour. I think we should have bowled a bit better. But then it is a very inexperienced attack. England were a very tough side and I think we fought well," Ganguly said.

England captain Nasser Hussain said his team could have attacked a bit more in the fourth test but "with a batting line-up as awesome as the indians have it was a bit threatening". (PTI)

Jayasuriya still undecided for ICC Tournament

COLOMBO, Sept 9: Sri Lankan skipper Sanath Jayasuriya, who is recovering from a shoulder injury, is still undecided on whether to play the first match against Pakistan on the opening day of the ICC Champions Trophy Cricket Tournament beginning September 12.

Talking to newspersons here, he said he was still not 100 per cent fit and was trying his best to make himself available for selection.

Being the hosts, the expectations of him playing was high. "But I did not feel any pressure since the tournament was held in our country. I am trying my level best...I started batting two days back, "Jayasuriya, who had sustained the injury during the final of the Morocco Cup a fortnight back, said.

"If I am not fit, how could I play, he said.

Meanwhile, team physio Alex Kontouri said, "Sanath was showing lot of improvement. We have to utilise the maximum time available before the match to make him fit. He is working very hard. At the moment the chances are 60-40," he added.

It’s not a one-day series or a test match. It’s a very important tournament. We have to wait and see.’’

However, vice-captain Marvan Attapattu was confident of his skipper becoming fit for the tournament’s pipe-opener.

About the team’s chances, Jayasuriya said home conditions might favour them. But did not believe that his team starts as a favourite. The first match against Pakistan is very important.

He said, "we cannot underestimate them. On a given day they can play extremely well."

Coach David Whatmore said, we need to put our best foot forward and win them.

However, he felt that the team who were more suited to the conditions in the sub-continent might be feel comfortable and can fancy their chances.

On the general impression that the Lankans were not playing well in overseas conditions as compared to home conditions, whatmore admitted that the team did not not play to its expectations during the recent series in England. "We have identified the reasons for the poor show. If we put them together we can do well whatever be the conditions," he added. (UNI)

Sampras beats Agassi to win fifth US Open

NEW YORK, Sept 9: Defying the odds, age and fatigue Pete Sampras beat fellow tennis legend Andre Agassi 6-3 6-4 5-7 6-4 to win the US Open final and claim an unprecedented 14th career grand slam.

Winless since Wimbledon 2000, Sampras ended a 33 tournament drought in Storybook Fashion.

Looking like the Pete Sampras of old rather than an old Pete Sampras, the 31-year-old American served with power and volleyed to perfection adding a fifth US Open title to his seven Wimbledon crowns and two Australian Open victories.

With the September 11 anniversary just three days off and the "heros flag" recovered from the rubble of the World Trade Center fluttering overhead, Sampras’s win followed a victory by Serena Williams in Saturday’s women’s final capping off a patriotic feel good weekend for Americans.

Sampras won the toss and chose to serve, firing in two aces as he held to love in the opening game.

Agassi’s serve is a fearsome weapon too, though, and he also held comfortably. It was not until the fifth game, and 18 consecutive points with serve, that the receiver — Agassi —won a point against serve.

Sixth seed Agassi forced Sampras to deuce in that fifth game but the holder of a record 13 grand slam titles fought him off to edge ahead 3-2 as a shadow crept across the Arthur Ashe Stadium Court.

Agassi’s third ace enabled him to level at 3-3 but Sampras unleashed his fastest serve of the championship in the next game, a 132 miles per hour ace.

Two sloppy forehand volley errors allowed Agassi a glimpse of hope, but Sampras slammed the door in his face with his eight ace in four service games. Three huge forehands from Sampras rocked Agassi onto his heels in the eighth game and a deft chip and charge on the Agassi serve gave the 17th seed a break for 5-3.

The most accomplished server in the sport needed just that one opportunity.

He missed two set points and saved a break point with a second serve ace before punching a backhand volley into open space to clinch the set 6-3 in 29 minutes.

Sampras carried the momentum into the second set breaking Agassi at the first opportunity when the Las Vegan’s backhand return sailed wide.

The 13-time grand slam winner then held serve to love, reeling off 10 straight points before Agassi could finally get on the board struggling to keep from going down two breaks.

Serving with power and volleying to near perfection, Sampras went three service games without dropping a single point while Agassi continued to wobble.

The relentless pressure resulted in another break opportunity for Sampras in the seventh game and he would not squander the chance, surging ahead 5-2 when Agassi’s normally deadly forehand return drifted long.

With Sampras serving for the set, Agassi went on the attack clawing back one break and holding to cut the deficit to 5-4.

After serving up 12 aces in the opening set, Sampras had just four in the second but two of those came while serving for the set, taking him to a 2-0 lead. The third set saw both players settle into a rhythm easily holding serve until Agassi would take the initiative getting the first break opportunities with Sampras leading 3-2.

Sampras, though, would save two of Agassi’s three break chances with thundering aces, his 21 and 22nd of the match, then holding serve with yet another unreturnable rocket.(AGENCIES)

2nd State Sport Climbing Championship concludes
Abhimanyu Sherpa retains Boys, Ashutosh

Excelsior Sports Correspondent

JAMMU, Sept 9: Abhimanyu Sherpa of MHAC School Nagbani today retained the Boys title and Ashutosh Sharma of S D Tara Puri School clinched Men’s title on the concluding day of the second J&K State Sport Climbing Championship.

Deepak Kumar of Jammu and Purshotam Chand of Vivek Niketan, High School Udhampur also climbed the wall and secured second and third positions respectively. Much was expected of Abhimanyu Sherpa, last year’s champion, but he failed to negotiate a tricky climbing move and finished medal less.

However, in the boys final, Abhimanyu struck an awesome form. His climb was an astonishing exhibition of power and technique. He climbed immaculately from one hold to the other, making excellent climbing moves and topped the wall in just three minutes against the alloted time of five minutes.

The spectators were held spell bound during his climb. Ashutosh Sharma, the Men’s Champion could not repeat his performance and finished third. Rafiq Mughal of Vivek Niketan High School, Udhampur climbed three holds less than the top and clinched second position.
