JJSF extends ultimatum
over exclusion
of disputed chapter
Excelsior Correspondent
JAMMU,
Oct 28:
Students protesting against anti-Maharaja remarks
in a school curriculum book, today extended their
last date of ultimatum to the J&K Board of
School Education, by another 10 days, for
removing controversial chapter from the book.
Now the last date
of the ultimatum has been set on November 7 as
education institutions will remain closed from
November 2 to November 6 in view of Puja
holidays.
Earlier, the Jammu
Joint Students Federation - which is spearheading
the agitation against anti-Maharaja remarks in
school curriculum book for class IV, had
threatened violent protests if the State Board
authorities did not exclude the controversial
chapter by October 28.
Meanwhile,
students of GGM Science College and SPMR
Commerce, led by JJSF activists, boycotted their
classes and held demonstration in favour of their
demand for exclusion of the controversial chapter
from Saras Bharti.
Some JJSF
activists, including Pushvinder Singh, also
addressed the demonstration and vowed to get the
controversial chapter excluded from the school
curriculum book.
They alleged that
the J&K School Education Board authorities
were forcing students to resort to violent action
and warned that the State Government would be
responsible for any untoward incident if their
demand was not conceded within the ultimatum
period.
Raising slogans
against the State Education Board authorities,
the JJSF activists took out a procession in the
city. They also got classes boycotted in
Government College for Women, Parade and then
dispersed peacefully.
The spark of
agitation against anti-Maharaja remarks also
engulfed the schools in outskirts of the city as
students of Higher Secondary School Domana,
Government Higher Secondary School Bishnah and
some private schools, also boycotted their
classes and held demonstrations.

from Domana school reached GGM Science College

Pro Swadeshi organizations hold
rally against
liberalization,
privatisation
Excelsior Correspondent
JAMMU,
Oct 28:
Three pro Swadeshi organizations Bharatiya
Mazdoor Sangh, (BMS), Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS)
and Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM) have warned the
Central Government to do away with its economic
and liberalization policies which, they said were
inimical to the national interests.
Addressing a
public rally at Parade Ground here today, the
senior BMS leader S Laxman Ravinder Singh took
the Central Government to task for playing with
the cause of working class and farmers of the
country.
The rally was held
in protest against the Central Governments
industrial and economic policies. It started from
the Jammu Press Club and after passing through
various markets converted into a public meeting
at Parade Ground.
The demonstrators
with banners and placards in their hands shouted
slogans against the disinvestment and
liberalization policies of the Central
Government.
Mr Singh said in
case the Government does not review and change
its present economic policies it will face the
wrath of the working class and farming community
who will launch a nation wide agitation to
protect the interests of poor masses of the
country.
He alleged that
signing of GATT Pact and invasion of
multinationals, World Bank and IMF is a threat to
the country. It will result into the closure of
Indian factories and retrenchment of the workers.
Holding former
Finance Minister and senior Congress leader, Mr
Manmohan Singh responsible for the present
economic policies, he said the process started in
1991-92 during the Congress rule.
But these policies
were continued by Mr Deve Gowda and Mr I K Gujral
who claimed themselves to be the champions of
farmers and working class during their Government
also. The policies have even been persued by the
present NDA Government headed by Mr Atal Behari
Vajpayee which resulted in public resentment and
anger, he added.
Lambasting the
National Conference (NC) which ruled the J&K
for last six years, he alleged that it failed to
do any thing for the farmers and working class.
Instead of solving the problems of the workers
they looted the state exchequer, he added.
While taking the
new political combination in J&K to task, he
said the new Government has not taken over yet
and the tussle has started over the sharing of
portfolios. How such a political dispensation can
solve the problems of the people when they have
many intra party contradictions.
"It is not
known what good they will do to the masses by
releasing the terrorists. Will such a policy help
in curbing the terrorism," he asked?
Addressing the
rally Mr Vijay Chandal, state BMS chief said this
rally is an eye opener for the Central and State
Governments who are persuing the anti people
economic policies blindly.
He demanded that
the Central Governments industrial pension
policy be implemented in J&K immediately, EMS
Hospital be completed at Bari Brahmana, working
in Provident Fund offices be improved, salaries
be released in favour of SRTC and Super Bazar
employees without further delay.
Earlier addressing
the rally Mr Pawan Baru, organizer Swadeshi
Jagran Manch (SJM) strongly criticized the
Central Government anti farmers and anti working
class economic policies.
He urged the
Government not to work as per the dictates of
World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF)
and do away with the economic policies which have
been implemented on the directives of these
organizations.
He said the Indian
farmers face a threat with the entry of foreign
agriculture products and the globalization,
privatisation and computerization has made the
workers idle.
The rally among
others was also addressed by Messrs Rajinder
Singh state president BKS its zonal secretary,
Joginder Singh and general secretary Shiv Dev
Singh.

JJSFs strike call flops, no
untoward incidents
Excelsior Correspondent
JAMMU,
Oct 28:
Life across Jammu remained completely undisturbed
on Monday, even as activists of the Jammu Joint
Students Federation (JJSF) had laboured hard to
accomplish their targetthat is,make all and
sundry observe complete hartal.
Hartal call had
been given a day earlier by the JJSF against the
Congress High Commands decision to allow
the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief,
Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, to head the coalition
Government in the State.
After the call was
formally given at a news conference by the chief
of the JJSF, Mr Rajinder Singh Jamwal, it was
natural for the law and order machinery to press
itself in motion, clearly to ensure peace and
tranquility in the event of any mishap or
untoward incident.
When the people
woke up in the morning, the presence of police
personnel in a number of vulnerable places just
didnt surprise them. Reason: Deployment of
policemen in strength on occasions when
individuals or groups of people have something up
their sleeve, is neither abnormal nor unexpected.
Organisers as well
as sympathisers of the Jammu bandh
had it when majority of the people dropped the
brick on them by defying the call for a complete
strike.
Everything seemed
normalfrom commercial transport activity to
trade to functioning of educational institutions
and of Government and private organisations and
undertakings across Jammu.
So much so, places
of entertainment witnessed, as usual,
tension-free and trouble-free atmosphere during
the day.

back-stabbed people of Jammu region: Sadhotra

hungry face of Congress has been exposed before

during their entire election campaign, Congress

Congress played regional card, he said, adding,
"for sharing power with Mufti they (Congress
leaders) played with the emotion of Jammu people
to whom they had exploited during the election
campaign". Mr Sadhotra said that Congress

"Congress is only pro-power and for lust of
power this party can join with any group or any

silent over providing justice to Jammu region
Cong-PDP announce concession for
terrorists: Gupta
Excelsior Correspondent
JAMMU,
Oct 28:
Senior BJP leader and Union Minister of State for
Defence, Prof Chaman Lal Gupta has described the
Common Minimum Programme drawn by the Congress
and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to run their
coalition in Jammu and Kashmir as ambiguous,
contradictory and unrealistic.
Addressing the BJP
activists here, Prof Gupta said that on the one
hand there was much talk about restoration of
peace but on the other several concessions have
been promised to the terrorists and killers of
innocent persons. He pointed out that the
Congress-PDP has announced concessions for the
kins of the terrorists but there has been little
mention to help the destitudes caused by
terrorism.
Taking a strong
exception of abolishing of POTA and withdrawal of
cases registered under this law, Prof Gupta said
that about 200 cases under POTA have been
registered in the State. Many of such cases
pertain to the massacres like those of Rajiv
Nagar, Dudasan Bala and about several other
incidents of blasts and killings. Terrorists and
their associates booked under POTA also include
many Pakistani, Afgans and other foreigners.
Whether all these would go scot free, he wondered
and further said that this agenda also provides
for freedom to those politicians who have been
getting funds from abroad through various Hawala
channels to finance terrorism.
About the regional
disparities, Prof Gupta said that nothing
concrete has been proposed to bring to an end to
the step-motherly treatment being extended to
Jammu and Ladakh regions for the past over 50
years except talking about to grant the post of
Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu as if this would
solve the entire problem of regional imbalances.
He said that
unless the whole political mantle is changed and
Jammu is granted its due share in political
structure of the State, the regional disparities
as also the tension that had developed, cannot
end. The basic thing is that Jammu is having
about 4 lakh more electorates and nearly double
the geographical area than Kashmir Valley but
still Kashmir Valley has been provided as many as
47 seats.
Prof Gupta asked
both Congress and PDP that whether they are
prepared to grant Jammu region the representation
on basis of its strength of electorates and
geographical area before talking something else.
On this vital issue why this agenda is totally
silent ?
He asked the BJP
activists to gear up to meet the challenges ahead
because the BJP is the legacy of a movement which
was launched by late Pandit Prem Nath Dogra with
the objective of defending Jammu and Kashmir as
an integral part of the country by frustrating
any design of forces inimical to India, and at
the home front to bring to an end to the regional
discrimination so as to ensure justice to all the
people and regions irrespective of their caste
and creed.

Ladakhi
language making good strides
in Himalayan regions
Excelsior Correspondent
LEH,
Oct 28:
Two Ladakhi scholars Nawang Tsering Shakspo and
Thupstan Paldan have said that Ladakhi language
and scripts are making a good stride in Himalayan
regions including Baltistan.
This was disclosed
by Nawang Tsering, Editor-cum-Cultural Officer,
J&K Cultural Academy, Leh, who just returned
after attending 8th Himalayan Language Symposium,
held in Berne, the capital of Switzerland,
organised by University of Berne from September
19, 2002.
According to
experts, Ladakhi belongs to the Sino-Tibetan
language phylum of the Tibetan-Burman line, in
the western branch of the Tibetan language
family. Puriki and Balti also belong to the same
language group.
He said Bod-yig
script of Tibet came to Ladakh some time in 8th
century and at that time Ladakh was known as
Western Tibet. The lower portion of Ladakh
bordering Kashmir and Baltistan was known as
Purik (Pod-rigs) which literally means people
like that of Tibet.
During those days,
the Tibetan language was prevalent in those area
who were having the faith in Buddhism. With the
Islamisation in the 14th century, the people of
Baltistan and Purik (Kargil, Suru Valley, Sod,
Paskyum, Chingam etc) adopted Islam and with that
these people lost contact with Ladakhi script and
literature. Balti language was written in Urdu
thus Tibetan script vanished from these areas.
Mr Nawang and Mr
Paldan said here in Ladakhi literary forum said
here that six scholars of Baltistan mainly
hailing from Skardo, the chief town of Baltistan,
who participated in the symposium were of the
notion that the Balti language which is actually
the western branch of Sino-Tibetan language is
facing difficulty to write in persian and in
pronunciation and said that introduction of
Pod-yig (Ladakhi script) in brewing up in the
literacy field in Baltistan.
The Balti scholars
said at the symposium that to bring Tibetan
script in Baltistan, Balti Primer using Tibetan
script have been brought out by the Baltistan
Culture Foundation and are being introduced in
Skardo and Khapulu.
Seventy scholars
hailing from different Himalayan regions
including USA, UK and other European and Asian
countries participated in the four days long
symposium. Ladakhi participants gave their thrust
towards use of classical Tibetan for writing
modern Ladakhi.

Bitta urges Cong-PDP to
reconsider its decision on POTA
HYDERABAD,
Oct 28:
The Congress-PDP coalitions decision not to
implement Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) in Jammu and
Kashmir was fraught with dangerous consequences for the
country, former youth Congress president and Chairman of
All India Anti-Terrorist Forum (AIATF) Maninderjit Singh
Bitta warned today.
Urging the party high
command to reconsider its decision, Bitta
told reporters here that his forum would approach
President A P J Abdul Kalam seeking his intervention to
strengthen implementation of anti-terror law in the
border state.
We should not make a
mockery of martyrdom of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.
Any softening of stand on terrorism will prove dangerous
for the country, Bitta, who survived terrorist
attack in 1993, said.
Stating that all political
parties should keep aside their power
politics and unitedly wage war on terrorism, he
said if POTA is withdrawn from Kashmir where
Pakistan is fomenting terrorism, where else in the
country is this law necessary?
Bitta, who survived a
major bomb attack on Youth Congress headquarters in Delhi
on September 11, 1993, said the sacrifices of several
policemen, party workers and common public should not be
allowed to go waste.
Kashmiris have

should not be frittered away by taking a lenient approach
towards terrorism, he said. (PTI)

when some local people noticed him and mistook him as a
Kale Kachewale gang member. They catch hold
of the Sadhu and assaulted him.
As the word spread that a
member of the gang, which had let loose a reign of terror
in the City and outskirts for past over a fortnight, has
been captured, one of the youth stabbed him on the arm
causing him a serious injury.
Meanwhile, police officers
including SP City (South) Raghubir Singh and SHO Gandhi
Nagar Inspector S S Samyal rushed to the spot and shifted
the injured Sadhu to hospital. Later, some local people
also confirmed that the Sadhu was putting up in the
locality for last couple of years.
Tension gripped Shiva
Chowk for about two hours. People dispersed after they
realised that the man in question was a Sadhu and not a
Kale Kachewale gangster.
