Kerala play crucial match against Assam today IMPHAL, Oct 28: After 3-2 win over Bengal in the opener, Kerala take on Assam in the second and last quarter-final league match in group a tomorrow for the semi-final berth of the 58th National Footaball Championship for L G Santosh Trophy. In Group B, last year semi-finalist Railways and Services also play their last match in the quarters at the Khuman Lampak Stadium at 1400 hours tomorrow. Kerala will play against Assam at the same ground at 1200 hours. S Ignetous struck twice and T Usman scored the winning goal that gave Kerala full three points on Sunday against Bengal, which placed the 29-times winner in a precarious position in the championship. While Bengal ended their league matches with three points from a 2-1 win over Assam in the opener on Friday, the match between Kerala and Assam became an interesting one in the group championship. But a draw is enough for Kerala to make it to the last four from the group. Coach M Peethambaran said Kerala are looking for full points from bottom rank Assam. Peethambaram said his boys are here to win the title and were keen to play against Assam as his striking line has a sting to pierce any side of the country. T Asif Saheer, S Ignetous and Usman were virtually terror to Bengal defence as they spread out play in both flanks to trouble rivals. With K Beenesh, Muhammaed Shafeeq, Vinu Joss and Sameer in back line, Goalie T G Purushothaman had hardly any trouble on Sunday. Conceeding the first goal against bengal was nothing wrong to Purushothman as the ball entered after hitting cross bar. Suresh Babu and Ajayan, especially the latter, were industrious to feed their frontliners which paved Kerala to a greater extent in 3-2 win over Bengal. Bengal coach Subrata Bhattacharjee again pointed out towards the organiser, All Manipur Football Association, for forcing his side to play all the matches under the scorching sun at noon. He also alleged poor refereeing against them in Kerala match and said on one occasion in the second half, a handball in the box was disallowed. It will be folly to underestimate Assam as far as Khuman Lampak stadium is concerned as the climatic condition here is similar to that in Assam. With Utpal Basumatary, Padum Rabha and Sanjiba Rongpi, the side looked a formidable one in the striking line. But it has also its weaknesses like lacking cohesion between midfielders and striking line. Assam can still come in the reckoning if they tumble the apple cart of Kerala in tomorrows match. Before 1-2 defeat to Bengal in the first quarter final league, Assam displayed entertaining football packing Andhra Pradesh and Bihar in an identical 3-0 margin in the preliminaries. Coach Ganesh Rai is still not a man to accept defeat. "We will not leave Kerala easily and anything can happen to upset major footballing states of the country" he said. Railways and Services also play their last match of the league tomorrow to decide the fate of Group B in which Maharastra topped with four points from two matches. Services in their first match against Maharastra drew 1-1, while Railways went down to Maharastra by a Naushad Moosa goal in first half. Railways, with majority of players from Bengal clubs, had displayed poor game against Maharastra on Sunday as their dependable right back and India international Satish Bharti of Mohun Bagan was awarded the red-card in the first match. They might face trouble in preventing the striking line from Services. Maharastra are looking forward to the outcome of the Railways and Services match tomorrow. Services coach T K Mazumdar said his side is still in the contest and looking for a bigger margin win over Railways for a semifinal berth. For Railways the match remained only of an academic interest but a big win for services might take the armymen into the last four. (UNI) |
Mark Waugh retires from international cricket SYDNEY, Oct 28: Mark Waugh announced his retirement from international cricket today within hours of being dropped from Australias team for the first Ashes test against England in Brisbane starting on November 7. One of Australias most elegant and accomplished batsmen of all time, Waugh told a packed news conference he would continue playing first-class cricket but accepted his days as an international player were over. "Having been left out of the current test team and the one-day team earlier this year, I feel my chances of playing for Australia at age 37 have led me to this decision," he said. "While I feel very disappointed not to be playing for Australia again, Ive been extremely lucky to have played for so long in such a great era of Australian cricket." Despite being one of Australias finest batsmen, Waugh had been under pressure to hold his place in the team after a lean run over the past year. He averaged just over 30 in his last 12 tests and had not scored a century since the last ashes test against England 14 months ago. "Im a fairly realistic person and I knew I needed to score more runs," he said. "Theres not much chance of a recall and Im smart enough to work it out, so nows the right time to go." Waugh said he was not surprised when Australias selection chairman Trevor Hohns telephoned him on Saturday to say he had lost his place in the team to South Australian captain Darren Lehmann, the all-time leading run-scorer in the domestic interstate championship. Waugh and his twin brother steve were both dropped from the one-day team earlier in the year and speculation was rife that their test careers were also under threat. Steve secured his test spot with an unbeaten century in last weekends third test win over Pakistan but Marks position remained doubtful after he managed just 80 runs in the series. Looking relaxed in an open-neck shirt and black sports jacket, Waugh said he spent the weekend contemplating his future but had no regrets about his decision. "Its actually a bit of a relief," he said. "Theres been a lot of pressure on me in the last year and I havent really enjoyed my cricket as much. "Its been a bit emotional for me but Ive had a great career. Its got to come to an end and there are a lot of people worse off than me, so Im really grateful for what Ive achieved." Waugh made his test debut against England in 1991, scoring a century on his first appearance after being called up at the expense of his brother, and has held the number four batting spot almost ever since. He went on to play 128 tests, scoring 8,029 runs at 41.81, including 20 centuries and, as a brilliant slip fielder and part-time bowler, he also took a world record 181 catches, plus 59 wickets. Waugh was also effective in one-day cricket, where he was mostly used as an opener, scoring 8,500 runs at 39.35, including 18 centuries. He was a key member of the Australian team that won the 1999 World Cup, one of the highlights of his career. A beautifully balanced player who made batting look easy, Waugh was sometimes criticised as lazy for occasionally throwing his wicket away when bigger scores beckoned. But the lowest point in his career was undoubtedly in 1998 when he was fined along with Shane Warne after admitting taking money off an illegal Indian bookmaker in exchange for information about pitch and weather conditions. He was investigated, then cleared, by the sports anti-corruption committee and survived widespread calls for his sacking from the team, but the experience upset him deeply. (AGENCIES) |
Unprecedented
security during India, West KOLKATA, Oct 28: An unprecedented security arrangement has been made for the third and final test match between India and West Indies beginning here at the historic Eden Gardens from October 30. City Police Commissioner Sujay Chakrabarty said today that the number of police personnel being deployed this time was more than earlier occasions. Besides usual deployment, contingents of Rapid Action Force (RAF) and commandos would be posted in different strategic positions to meet any emergency situation. There would also be continuous clockwise police patrolling outside the stadium as long as the players would remain there, he added. Giving details of the arrangements, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Headquarters) Shibaji Ghosh said more than three thousand police forces would be deployed in and outside the Eden Gardens, the venue of the match and the hotel where the players would be residing. Taj Bengal, the hotel in South Kolkata, looks like a mini fortress with gun totting special protection group commandos armed with automatic guns and pistols keeping a strict vigil. There would be more than two thousand armed police forces including special protection group to maintain law and otder in and around Eden Gardens, he added. Mr. Ghosh informed that metal detectors were being installed at various gates of the stadiums while close circuit televisions were being placed in different blocks. Close circuit television sets would also be installed before the entraces to the players dressing rooms so that no unwanted person could enter there. The police has also put a ban on carrying any cracker, match box and water bottles or any other items which could be thrown into the ground. Even newspapers would not be allowed inside the ground so that no one could lit a bonfire during or after the match inside the stadium. "As such we are not apprehending any trouble during the match. But we are not taking any chance, specially after various terrorist activities in and around the country," Mr Ghosh added. (UNI) |
Inter-College Cricket
Tournament Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Oct 28: Post Graduate Departments of Law and Sciences today entered into the semi-final of the Inter-College Cricket Tournament by defeating Post Graduate Department of Arts in the first quarterfinal by 39 runs. Post Graduate Departments of Law and Sciences decided to bat first after winning the toss and made a total of 263 runs in 38.1 overs by losing all wickets in the 40 overs stipulated match. Ankur was the batsman who played marvelous cricket and continued to loft the ball wide and near. He contributed 51 runs in the total with the help of seven hits to the fence. Indians march ahead in both mens and womens section BLED (SLOVENIA), Oct 28: Continuing their good showing in the opening round, the Indian mens team carved out a facile 3.5-0.5 victory against Colombia in the second round of the 35th Chess Olympiad here but the womens team faced some difficulty in prevailing over Mongolia with a 2-1 margin. The mens team, who had defeated Wales by a similar margin in their first round encounter, are placed joint third with seven points, half a point behind joint leaders Cuba and Bulgaria who defeated Bangladesh and Albania respectively by an identical 3.5-0.5 margin yesterday. In the womens section, Russia took the sole lead with six points after crushing Croatia on all three boards for their second 3-0 victory. Eight teams follow the leader on 5.5 points each while India are placed joint 14th with 4.5 points. Grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran was the hero for India yesterday as he was the only one playing against a grandmaster from Colombia on the top board. Playing black against a highly-rated Alonso Zapata, Sasikiran gave an excellent display of his endgame prowess. The players earlier blitzed the opening moves of Ruy Lopez exchange variation and Sasikiran had little trouble in equalising in the ensuing middlegame. Guiding his piece to sought after squares in the rook and minor pieces endgame, Sasikiran won a couple of pawns and cruised to an emphatic victory. If there was some nervousness about playing the first game ever in the Olympiad, double GM norm holder Surya Shekhar Ganguly did not show it and outclassed international master Alzate Dario on the second board. Ganguly, playing white, kept things under control right from the opening and capitalised on an erroneous sacrifice to score easily. Back in the Indian team after Dibyendu Barua opted out owing to health reasons, GM Pravin Thipsay got the better of Uribe Mauricio with white pieces on the fourth board. The middlegame, arising out of a French advance, was fought hard by both the players but Thipsay retained his advantage with consistent threats against the black king. A tactical trick netted the Indian an exchange after which it was childs play for him. This was Thipsays second consecutive victory. The half point was dropped on the third board where IM R B Ramesh was held to a draw by Miguel Mosquera. Playing black, Ramesh stuck to his newfound love in the Sicilian Sveshnikov and got the dynamic equilibrium that favoured him in the final stages of the game. However, Mosquera fought well to get the draw that turned out to be the only saving grace for his team. Amongst the Indian women, woman grandmaster Subbaraman Vijaya-lakshmi also recnd straight win. Playing black on the first board against Bayanmonh Anhchimeg of Mongolia, Vijayalakshmi faced the Ruy Lopez and exchanges at regular intervals did not prevent her from gaining a substantial advantage in the endgame. The victory came after the Indian pocketed a few pawns. Mongolias best player Bathuyag Mongontuul was fielded on the second board and Aarthie Ramaswamy played it safe though she managed a miniscule advantage out of the Sicilian Paulsen with white pieces. The draw was agreed to in 30 moves. On the third board, Swati Ghate was lucky to salvage a draw in a lost endgame against Tuvshintogs Batchimeg who played white. Swati missed some threads in the early part of the game and found herself struggling against a passed pawn in the centre. However, the Mongolian returned the favour with a blunder that ended the game in a peace result through perpetual checks. In other important games of the day, worlds highest rated player Garry Kasparov of Russia put it across Aleksij Aleksandrov of Belarus comprehensively on the first table. For Russia, Alexander Grishchuk dropped half a point on board two as Alexei Federov put up stiff resistance but Alexander Khalifman and Peter Svidler did the needful for their team by scoring swiftly over Andrei Kovalev and Viacheslav Dydyshko respectively. (PTI) Irani Cup Cricket NEW DELHI, Oct 28: Having won their maiden Ranji Trophy last season, Railways are looking to add one more feather in their cap as they take on rest of India in the Irani Cup cricket match starting at the Karnail Singh Stadium here tomorrow. Railways have had a glorious run in the last two years, reaching the Ranji Trophy final on each ocassion. And if their performance against the touring West Indians in the three-day tour match is anything to go by, the six-month gap between the end of the previous season and the start of current one hardly seems to have affected the players form. "I have told the players that what ever happened last year is history. This is a new season and we have to start afresh again," said Railways Coach Vinod Sharma. The match against the Caribbeans turned out to be a boon for Sharma, in that he was able to discover two stop-gap opening batsmen accidentally. With Amit Pagnis fracturing his thumb during practice on the morning of the match and J P Yadav injuring his middle finger while fielding, Sharma asked Murali Kartik and Shreyas Khanolkar - both lower order batsmen to open the innings. "I was confident of them doing well because both had played the second new ball well in the past couple of years," Sharma said. His hunch turned out right as Khanolkar and Kartik went on to make 167 runs for the opening wicket, the former scoring a century in 92 balls. That has left Sharma "sleepless for the last two nights" on deciding the playing eleven. The all-round aspect has been the unique character of this Railways team that had defeated tough opponents like Tamil Nadu, Bengal and Baroda in the knockout stages last year. The last three wickets have consistently contributed 200 runs with players like Kartik, Kulamani Parida and Harvinder Singh adding useful runs regularly. "I am really lucky to be coaching this team. The players, coming from various parts of the country, have shown tremendous team spirit. They are aware of their responsibility and work hard towards their sucess," Sharma said. But captain Abhay Sharma is aware of the teams weakness. "Our middle order has to produce more runs. We should not be leaving it to the tailenders too often," he said. The inclusion of Jacob Martin should solve much of their problem. Martin joined Railways last year but since he had played a match for Baroda already by that time, he had to wait for his transfer till the new season. The rest of India, led by the dashing Yuvraj Singh and containing some established names, is also a formidable unit. In the 42-year history of the cup, Rest of India have lost to six different opponents, with Mumbai getting the better of them on 14 occasions. The dates of the match overlap with that of the third test between India and West Indies - which starts on Wednesday in Kolkata - and it could mean less attention for this encounter. Yet, the players - particularly those from the rest of India - themselves have a lot to play for. The Mumbai opening batsman Wasim Jaffer conceded that he was back to square one after being dropped from the test team, and made no efforts to hide his disappointment at not being picked for the West Indies series. A good knock here and the upcoming Ranji matches could convince the selectors of his value on the New Zealand tour. Rohan Gavaskar is another player who would be hoping that his six-year toil in the domestic scene - and being the son of a legend at that - would finally bear fruit. "The fact that being in the rest team, any player in this match for that matter, shows that I am in the reckoning. Let me play a good knock and see how it goes," he said. Tinu Yohannan gets another chance to prove that he is the support bowler for Zaheer Khan India is searching for, as does Railways Harvinder Singh. Rakesh Patel and Irfan Pathan Jr., both from Baroda, are the other two bowlers to watch out for although it remains to be seen if rest play three seamers on the Karnail Singh track which has always been batsman-friendly. Likewise, hosts Murali Kartik and Sarandeep Singh from the rest are hoping to pose themselves as the answer for third spinners spot in the test team. Railways are expected to retain the team that played the West Indies in Pune, while rest will finalise their playing eleven tomorrow. (PTI) Politics polluting sports in India: Kapil LUCKNOW, Oct 28 : Ace allrounder Kapil Dev today lamented that politics in sports is polluting the healthy environment of the games. " Politics should be kept away from sports as it is the purest aspect of human nature which encourages the feelings of love, brotherhood, peace and unity", he said. Talking to media here, Kapil said he himself felt unhappy on the intervention of politics in sports from time to time leading to some kind of problems for talented sportspersons. He, however, refused to give any further detail on the subject saying everyone knows what he wants to say. Calling upon young sports talents to strive to give a good performance, Kapil said they should continue to bring laurel for the country in different games and not in cricket only. He admitted that peoples interest in sports is increasing in the country and now they are realising the importance of sports in ones life. It is a very good indication, he further added. Commenting on the expected performance of the Indian cricket team in the coming World Cup in South Africa next year, Kapil said " every Indian is certain that the present team is doing very well and if they continue to play well, the cup should be ours". He, however, claimed that the real test for the team would be its fitness and cordination in the World Cup. Kapil Dev would be inaugurating the five day international Sports Olympiad (Exspo) 2002 here this evening being organised by the City Montessori school. (UNI) |
