Langer aims to keep England on the back foot

PERTH (Australia), Oct 27: Western Australia will strive to keep England on the back foot in their tour match starting tomorrow Australia opener Justin Langer has said.

"The whole summer for us is about winning the Ashes. From my point of view I hope England gain no momentum because cricket is about momentum," Langer told a news conference today.

Langer will captain Western Australia in the three-day fixture. England lost their opening one-day match to an invitational side on october 22 and were then outplayed in a drawn two-day game against Western Australia.

The tourists’ preparations for the five-test series against Australia, starting in Brisbane on November 7, are also in disarray. Opening batsmen Marcus Trescothick (shoulder) and Michael Vaughan (knee) plus strike bowler Darren Gough (knee) and all rounder Andrew Flintoff (groin) are all nursing injuries.

Although Durham fast bowler Stephen Harmison was lampooned in the Australia media after bowling eight wides in one over during England’s 58-run loss to a Australian Cricket Board chairman’s XI, Langer said the 24-year-old had impressed him in county cricket as a bright prospect.

"He bowled like the wind. While he might not be getting it right at the moment, you are always wary of someone with that pace and bounce," Langer said. (AGENCIES)

LG Santosh Trophy
Bengal go down to Kerala, Maha beat Rlys

IMPHAL, Oct 27: Defending champions Kerala pipped strong contenders Bengal 3-2 while Maharashtra Got past last year’s semi finalists Railways 1-0 in the quarter-final matches of the 58th National Football Championship for LG Santosh Trophy here today.

Poor defence cost Bengal dearly as they surrendered their early lead through Chandan Das in the opening session and failed to hold on after Sandip Das drew parity in the second half of the group a match played at the Khuman Lampak main stadium.

Kerala rode on a double strike by S Ignatius and a winner by Usman minutes before the long whistle to earn full points against their formidable opponents.

The match was also marred by frayed tempers and two Bengal players, Das and Anupam Sarkar were shown yellow cards for arguing with the referee.

In a group b encounter, Maharashtra notched up a solitary goal victory through Nausad Moosa in the 37th minute.

The match began on a dull note with neither team being able to penetrate the rivals’ defence.

Railways wasted a close chance when Subhash Chakravarty shot wide from an advantageous position in the 20th minute.

The winning goal came soon after with Moosa, waiting in the opponents’ box to receive the corner kick, headed home past the Railways custodian.

Three minutes later, Railways missed a gifted chance to restore parity when Stephen Dias, having only the Maharashtra goalkeeper to beat, shot wide off the mark.

Railway, however, suffered a jolt in the second half as referee Benjamin D Silva gave marching orders to Satish Bharati for rough play.

Earlier, in the Bengal-Kerala match, Chandan Das gave Bengal the early lead in the 20th minute by netting in from a Surya Bikash Chakravorty cross.

Kerala fought back to score an equaliser and made it 1-1 in the 31st minute through S Ignatius who headed home a cross from Abdul Hakim.

With the scoreline being 1-1 at the breather, Kerala soared into the lead in the 59th minute when Ignatius scored his second goal after receiving a cross from Ashis Saheeer. Refusing to budge under the pressure, Bengal drew parity in the 79th minute. (PTI)
