Eden pitch to be firm and sporting: Curator

KOLKATA, Oct 24: The re-laid track at the Eden Gardens, the venue of the third test between India and West Indies, would be firm and have even bounce, though rain has delayed the preparations, Curator Prabir Mukherjee said here today.

"We are working hard to give the public a sporting wicket where both the bowlers and batsmen will get an equal assistance. But the late monsoon showers have caused delays in the preparations," Mukherjee told PTI.

The groundsmen were now giving finishing touches to the pitch, which contains grass, and vigorous rolling was being done.

"Though the wicket might not be a green top, the grass in the track after the usual mowing would be allowed to remain," he said.

When pointed out that in the past pitches had to be made bald before start of matches as per the wished of various Indian captains, Mukherjee said "I have no idea that present skipper Sourav Ganguly has made any such request."

He said though the wicket was untested, the ‘right’ behaviour of the practice pitches, which has been similarly re-laid, had given him the confidence that the track would be firm and have even bounce.

The BCCI has relaid the tracks of major international centres including Eden Gardens to prepare fast, bouncy pitches, as encountered by the Indian team abroad.

But the tracks at both Mumbai and Chennai, the venues of the first two tests against the Caribbeans, were slow turners and ended in Indian wins inside four days.

Mukherjee, also member of the grounds and pitches committee of the Indian Cricket Board, said a newly laid pitch would start giving the best results after six months. "The freshly prepared wickets have not had that much time," he added.

He, however, discounted fears that due to the nagging rains in Kolkata, the track at eden might be an underprepared one. "We will definitely complete the entire task in time," he said.

Asked what would happen if there were more rains, Mukherjee said that the ground had very good covering arrangements.

Cab president Jagmohan Dalmiya has already voiced concern about the pitch, saying that the rains have hampered the preparations.

The Bengal probables would play a trial match at a pitch by the side of the one scheduled for the test tomorrow.

Sourav Ganguly is expected to play in the match to get some batting practice ahead of the coming test. (PTI)

Chris Gayle hits century to comfortably place Windies

PUNE, Oct 24: Opener Chris Gayle struck a superb century as West Indian batsmen finally struck form ahead of the third test in Kolkata, reaching an imposing 297 for two at close on the first day of the three-day match against Ranji Champions Railways here today.

When stumps were drawn for the day, Darren Ganga was batting on a solid 66 while Marlon Samuels was yet to open his account.

Railways bowlers were virtually sent on a leather hunt as Gayle (154) and Ganga added 225 runs for the second wicket to take the West Indies’ total from 71 for one to 296 when a tired looking Gayle was bowled by pace bowler Harvinder Singh towards the fag end of the day.

Earlier the visitors, who took the field resting skipper Carl Hooper, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Mervyn Dillon and Pedro Collins, won the toss and stand-in captain Ridley Jacobs elected to bat.

The Caribbean openers straightaway went into overdrive and were propelled by a quickfire half-century by opener Wavell Hinds who scored an exact 50.

Though off-spinner Kulamani Parida tasted success early dismissing Hinds caught by Jacob Martin in the slips, Railways hopes to further dent the confidence of visiting batsmen vanished as Gayle and Ganga returned after lunch and batted fluently.

The duo tackled the three main spinners - Parida, Murali Kartik and Tejinderpal Singh with ease and scored at will. They used their feet well and often played the sweep shot to maximum effect.

Gayle, who was playing second fiddle when Hinds was on fire, took charge after the dismissal of his partner and played some glorious shots all round the wicket.

The stylish West Indian hit 23 fours and two huge sixes, one each off Parida and Kartik, in his marathon 294-ball knock that lasted almost six hours.

Gayle was particularly severe on Harvinder whom he drove through extra covers for two boundaries in one over before flicking the off-spinner Parida to the square leg fence.

Gayle who got a life when he was dropped by kartik off his own bowling when on 19 made the Railways’ bowler pay dearly for the fielding lapse.

Kartik hoping to make a come back into the Indian team had nothing to show for his efforts ending the day with figures of 29-0-79-0.

None of the Railways bowlers impressed and they sorely missed all-rounder Sanjay Bangar who was asked by the cricket board to rest ahead of the third and final test starting in Kolkata on October 30.

At the other end, Ganga, a last minute replacement for star batsman Brian Lara, played the sheet anchor role to perfection.

Ganga also played some delightful shots square off the wicket and entertained with fine sweep shots to remain on course for a century.

He has so far faced 213 balls and hit 11 fours.

Railways captain Abhay Sharma took the new ball after 89 overs and was immediately rewarded when Harvinder sent back Gayle. (PTI)

FOOTBALL/Santosh Trophy
Bengal take on Assam in first quarter final match

IMPHAL, Oct 24: Strong contenders Bengal take on Assam in the first quarter-final match of the 58th National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy tomorrow while Maharashtra and Services fight it out in the second match of the day.

Fresh from their 7-0 thrashing of Rajasthan and 5-0 drubbing of Jammu and Kashmir, a charged Bengal seem unstoppable in their quest for winning the title with excellent coordination between their forwards and midfield.

Striker Dipendu Biswas, who scored seven goals in the two cluster matches, is in very good form and is likely to be the spearhead of the Bengal attack.

The Bengal defence is, however, yet to be seriously tested since they did not have much work against Rajasthan and Jammu and Kashmir and may face a sterner test in the quarter final league matches.

Assam will be banking on the skills of striker Utpal Basumatary for an early strike and hold on to that lead but would be be quite content if they can share points with their fancied rivals.

Assam had a good showing in the preliminary round matches beating Bihar 3-0 and overcoming Andhra Pradesh by a similar margin.

Formidable Maharashtra and Services would battle it out in the second match of the day with the former having a slight edge.

Services, however, had a relatively easy run up to the quarter-finals as they humbled Uttar Pradesh by five goals and downed Sikkim by three.

Maharashtra won by a brace against Chandigarh and then managed to overcome a young and spirited Meghalaya 3-2. (PTI)

*Ian’s century, six wickets haul by Apnam help J&K getting 5 pts

Excelsior Sports Correspondent

JAMMU, Oct 24: Superb all-round show by skipper Ian Dev Singh and magnificent six wicket haul by Apnam Gupta today guided J&K to a brilliant show against Himachal Pradesh, thereby getting five points by virtue of their first innings lead on the third and last day of the Polly Umrigar Trophy U-15 Cricket at M A Stadium, here.

Resuming at an over-night odd score of 99, Ian Dev today completed his century and remained unbeaten at 118 when all J&K wickets fell at 220 runs before lunch time. Third and last day witnessed the fall of overall 18 wickets.

With nine runs’ first innings deficit, Himachal Pradesh began the second innings on confident note with 76 run first wicket stand. But, as soon as the openers Minesh Thakur (37) and Aditya Chowdhary (53) went to the pavilion, the Himachal batsmen fell like nine pins and the whole side was bowled with the addition of 77 more runs to the total score of 153 in 52.3 overs.

It was Apnam, who sent the Himachal batsmen to the pavilion cheaply taking away six wickets in a row. No batsman, who became victim of Apnam’s spin bowling, could reach the double figure mark.

Six wickets taker in the first innings, Ian Dev, once again troubled the Himachal batsmen and claimed three wickets making it a match haul of nine.

At the end of the day, J&K were playing at 54 for one in 29 overs. Ian Dev and Rohit Bhat were at the crease with 22 and 23 runs in their respective accounts.
