West Indies desperate to prepare well for 3rd Test

PUNE, Oct 23: Thrashed and humiliated in the first two tests, the West Indies would be desperate to get their act together in the three-day match against Ranji Trophy champions Railways starting here tomorrow as they prepare to salvage some pride in the third and final Test in Kolkata.

The West Indies have found their batting to be woefully inept and the match offers an excellent opportunity for them to set things right to avoid a whitewash in the Test series.

With railways boasting of quality spinners like Murali Kartik and Kulamani Parida, the West Indies can expect to get test-class challenge from them.

Kartik and Parida will themselves be trying hard to make an impression and stake their claims for the one-day series, the squad for which is still to be named.

Railways have developed as a formidable outfit in the last couple of years, mainly on account of their well-balanced line-up which does not have any extra-ordinary talent but a number of utility players who are willing to work hard and play as a well-knit unit.

Prolific scorers in the last season like Yere Goud, Raja Dav make up for a solid batting line-up which has been further strengthened by the arrival of former Baroda captain Jacob Martin.

However, the star of the Railways has been the unassuming Sanjay Bangar who has worked his way into the national team with sheer determination and hard work and is doing a commendable job as a test opener. It was not yet clear whether Bangar would be playing in this match though he does figure in the 17-member squad.

West Indies will be trying out a few options as they seek to get a right combination. Except for skipper Carl Hooper, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan, none of the other batsmen have been able to tackle the Indian spinners. Even these three have had only limited success, failing to convert their starts into big knocks.

With wicketkeeper Ridley Jacobs woefully out of form, the West Indies tail starts very early and the tourists would be determined to sort such things out in this match.

They are likely to play Darren Ganga, replacement for the indisposed Brian Lara, and also Darren Powell and Marlon Samuels in tomorrow’s match. All the three have not been tried on this tour so far.

The inclusion of both spinners - Mahendra Nagamootoo and Gareth Breese - is also a distinct possibility given the fact that the Kolkata track is also likely to be helpful to the slow bowlers.

Apart from Mervyn Dillon, the West Indian bowling has also been a weak link with Cameron Cuffy and Pedro Collins looking far from their best. But Jermaine Lawson, who replaced Cuffy in the second test, had looked good.

For Railways, this would be the first match after a long break from cricket and they would be keen to start the season on a positive note. (PTI)

Ranatunga settles criminal case by giving compensation

COLOMBO, Oct 23: Sri Lanka’s former cricket captain Arjuna Ranatunga and his brother have settled a criminal case against them by offering compensation to school students allegedly assaulted by them here in March last year.

The students had alleged that Ranatunga, his brother Prasanna and others had beaten them up when they entered their residence here looking for a cricket ball that had landed in their premises from a school next door.

The Ranatungas had vehemently denied the charge, contending that the students might have earned the wrath of domestic servants by their provocative behaviour, but faced a criminal case after some of the students were hospitalised with injuries.

The case had been dragging on for months, and Ranatunga’s lawyers offered to settle the matter by paying compensation. The students agreed to the offer of rs 200,000, reserving their right to file a civil case for more.

The settlement was arrived at before an Additional District Judge here yesterday, according to Ranatunga’s lawyers. They said the offer of cash compensation did not amount to an admission of guilt, but was only a way to end the protracted criminal proceedings.

Judge Kusala Sarojani Weerawardena said the students were fut closed the criminal case.

The two Ranatunga brothers and three others had been charged with assault, unlawful assembly and illegal detention. (PTI)

Sachin unveils "TVS Cup" for India-Windies ODIs

MUMBAI, Oct 23: TVS Motor Company today made its foray into the cricketing arena with batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar unveiling the "TVS Cup" for the one-day international series between India and West Indies starting from November six.

"I am unveiling something like this for the first time. I hope that India will get to keep this trophy after the end of the series," Tendulkar, who is also the brand ambassador for TVS, told reporters here.

The Hosur-based TVS will be the main sponsor of the ODI series and apart from the trophy, it will also hand over a cheque of Rs 50,000 to the "Victor (man) of Series" and Rs 35,000 to "Victor (man) of the match", executive vice President P C Mathew said adding this was the company’s first ever sponsorship of cricket at such a large scale.

Referring to the recent ICC controversy on sponsorships, Tendulkar, who completed 20,000 runs in international cricket during the second test against West Indies in Chennai, thanked his sponsors for "supporting him during the hitch and letting him concentrate only on the cricket with an open mind".

Supporting the role of corporates in sponsoring games, Tendulkar said "each and every game requires sponsors for its development".

During the ICC Champions Trophy Tournament, TVS had decided to withdraw its commercials featuring Tendulkar from television.

As part of its sponsorship menu, the company has also lined up contests like "pitch on wheels" and a lucky draw at all the seven venues wherein four two wheelers will be awarded to the lucky spectators. (PTI)

Sunita claims innocence

NEW DELHI, Oct 23: Drug-tainted Sunita Rani today appeared before the one-man Sushil Salwan Committee, set up to probe the doping scandal, and vehemently denied she had ever taken any banned substance.

"I am totally innocent. I have done nothing wrong," Sunita said in a statement after a marathon two-and-a-half hour closed door meeting with Salwan here.

"I will fight this battle to the last," Sunita, who was stripped off her gold and bronze medals that she won in the Busan Asian Games, said.

Sunita said the medals that she won in Busan were not only hers but "belonged to the country as well".

"I appeal to the Government, media and the people to support me in this fight to get justice," said Sunita, who was escorted by her brother and relatives as she waded her way through a stream of mediapersons at the Amateur Athletic Federation of India premises.

Sunita also denied reports that said she was planning to "expose other athletes". "The reports are totally false. Some people are conspiring against me."

Reading out from a brief prepared text, Sunita said she had tested negative before leaving for Busan and she would prove her innocence.

Later Salwan said Sunita had co-operated during the questioning but he would need more time to complete his probe.

"I asked her about her training, stay in Busan, her daily habits, coaches and everything that would throw light on the case," said Salwan, who is the vice president of AAFI.

"But it is too premature to suggest what really happened," Salwan said.

Expressing his inability to complete the inquiry within the week’s time given to him by AAFI president Suresh Kalmadi, Salwan said, "we will be making a request for a ten-day extension. It is not possible to complete the probe within a week," he said.

The committee was set up on Sunday, a day before the Olympic Council of Asia officially confirmed that Sunita had been stripped of her gold and bronze medals that she won in 1500m race and 5000m at the Busan Asian Games.

"We will have to question many more people and the enormity of the task at hand necessitates more time," Salwan said.

"We will go through all the relevant dope reports and also talk to coaches, doctors and others concerned," he said.

"I have come to know that certain other norms which could have been followed in busan were not followed," Salwan said but hastened to add that he was "not casting any aspersions on the testing procedures followed".

Salwan said he would go in to the report received from the Busan Asian Games Organising Committee as also the tests that Sunita underwent in Patiala and Delhi before leaving for South Korea.

"I will try to go into every detail of this case. I am also going to visit some laboratories in this regard," he said adding that Sunita may be required to depose again after he had finished questioning other people. (PTI)

Excelsior Sports Correspondent
