Australia complete 3-0 series win over Pak

SHARJAH, Oct 22: Australia completed a 3-0 series win over Pakistan today when they won the third test by an innings and 20 runs with more than a day to spare.

The fourth day’s play was reduced to a formality after Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne shared six wickets to reduce Pakistan to 176 for eight in their second innings at close of play on the third day.

Pakistan, following on after conceding a first innings lead of 223 runs, still needed 47 runs to avoid the ignomity of crashing to a second successive innings defeat.

Raza, who struck an unbeaten 54 in the first innings, hit 11 fours during his 154-ball career-best innings.

Bichel struck again to remove Mohammed Sami who top-edged to Damien Martyn for 22 after adding 10 runs to his overnight score.

Aided by century knocks from Ricky Ponting (150) and Steve Waugh (103 not out) Australia took control of the match by piling up 444 in their first innings.

Australia then dismissed Pakistan for 221 in their first innings to take a 223-run lead with McGrath and Warne sharing nine wickets.

Pakistan, following on, once again faltered in the face of the McGrath-Warne attack, who shared 41 wickets in the series.

Leg-spinner Warne, named man-of-the-match and man-of-the-series, captured eight for 130 to take his series tally to 27.

Strike bowler McGrath, who took his 400th test wicket, during the series, finished with 14 wickets. (AGENCIES)

Waugh says Australia did it the hard way

Australia captain Steve Waugh praised his players today for the team ethic they had displayed during their 3-0 series whitewash of Pakistan.

Australia completed their second consecutive innings victory on Tuesday on the final day of a series played on neutral territory because of security fears in Pakistan.

"I don’t want to use stuff like crushing and clinical performance, all I would say that we played to our potential and won the series," said Waugh.

"We did think it would be a lot harder for us in the second and third tests but we did well to create the pressure on the Pakistan players forcing them to make mistakes".

"We enforced the follow-on just because we wanted to win the series the hard way. And, in the end, we won with ease, which was a bit of surprise for us".

Waugh praised the performances of man-of-the-series Shane Warne and strike bowler Glenn McGrath, who joined the 400-plus club during the final test.

"But we as a team always look beyond individuals," he said. "Statistics don’t always reflect the true picture". (AGENCIES)

Bengal, Maharashtra, Manipur in last eight
of Santosh Trophy

IMPHAL, Oct 22: Cup contenders Bengal, formidable Maharashtra and hosts Manipur sailed into the quarter-finals prevailing over their rivals in contrasting styles in the 58th National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy here today.

Bengal trounced Jammu and Kashmir 5-0 to top cluster one, while Maharashtra survived some anxious moments before pipping Meghalaya 3-2 in cluster two at the Polo Club ground.

In the other match of the day, hosts Manipur rode on a Bijen Singh hat-trick to thrash Pondichery 9-0 and finish as champions of cluster four.

Bengal striker Dipendu Biswas, who has been in scintillating form, netted thrice against a weak J & K to take his tally to seven from two matches. Biswas had scored four goals when his team drubbed Rajasthan 7-0 in their tournament lung-opener.

Surya Bikash Chakraborty and Anupam Sarkar got the other goals for the winners in the one-sided match.

Seizing the initiative from the outset, Bengal went into the lead in the fourth minute through Biswas who again found the target 21 minutes later to make the scoreline 2-0 at the breather.

Bengal kept up the tempo in the second half, and Chakraborty showed fine opportunism to score in the 65th minute.

The goal left the J&K team completely demoralised and Bengal forwards yet again came calling at the rival goalmouth with Biswas increasing the margin in the 68th minute.

Sarkar then shot home in the 84th minute to make the final tally 5-0.

Winners of 1999-2000 edition, Maharashtra needed a draw to make it to the quarters on goal average in Group II, but a scintillating display from Aziz Quereshy brought them on the winning side.

After a blank first half, Aziz took the cudgel giving Maharashtra the first goal in just five minutes after the lemon break. (UNI)

Paragliding meet takes off in Shimla

SHIMLA, Oct 22: The Himachal Pradesh Tourism and Civil Aviation Department will organise "paragliding pre World Cup India 2002" at Bir-Billing in Kangra Valley from October 26 to 29 next.

About 100 paragliders, including 40 leading pilots from France, USA, Japan and Russia, will be participating in the event.

The air travel of top ranking international pilots is being sponsored by Air India.

The four-day event will include paragliding tasks — out-and return distance, gain of height and distance over a triangular course, according to Principal Secretary ( Tourism, Youth and Sports) Ashok Thakur.

A separate set of tasks has been announced for professional and amateurs which will make the tournament exciting.

The world’s best paragliders are taking part in the event, which is being organised with the technical assistance of Aero Club of India and Free Flight Association of India. Among the pilots are Scotty Marion (world no 2), Norman Lausch (world no 5), Americo Sousa (world no 16) and Stephance Andre (world no 17).

This announcement, the first one not only in India, but also in the entire Himalayas to be recognised by the Paragliding World Cup Association is being billed as a precursor to a possible full fledged World Cup leg in India.

The last World Cup was held in five stages-in France, Italy, Turkey, Mexico and Korea. Mr Thakur said that one of the important objectives of conducting the event was to expose the local pilots abroad.

In Himachal, this sport has become very popular in places like Manali, Bilaspur and Kangra and is, infact, an important source of livelihood to about more than 150 families in the state.

Keeping this in mind the State Government notified the aero sports rules on August 24, 2002 under the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development and Registration Act ,2002 which now ensures enforcement of regulatory mechanisms under which technical and regulatory committees have been set up by the Government which has made it the first state in the country to introduce safety measures.

Mr Thakur said that at the end of the event a two-day workshop would be organised exclusively for Himachali-based paragliders where they would have an opportunity to bone their skills by interacting with foreign instructors. The Department of Tourism has made all necessary arrangements for boarding and lodging for all participants, including those from Himachal Pradesh. (UNI)
