McGrath, Warne set up Pak whitewash SHARJAH, Oct 21: Australias Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne demolished Pakistan as Waqar Youniss team headed towards a series whitewash in the third and final test today. Mcgrath, who became the eighth man to take 400 test wickets before Pakistan were forced to follow on when dismissed for 221, once again exposed the brittleness of the top order. Pakistan ended the third day on 176 for eight, still 47 runs short of avoiding a second successive innings defeat. McGrath, 32, reached his landmark right on lunch with Waqars wicket on his way to figures of four for 41 and added three for 18 in the second innings. He is the second Australian after leg-spinner Warne, to capture 400 test victims. Warne, who had claimed five for 74 in the first innings, added three for 56. Pakistans Hasan Raza, hailed six years ago as the youngest test player at 14 years and 227 days but who has barely played since, provided the Staunchest resistance with 56 not out after making 54 not out in the first innings. The start to the Pakistan second innings was depressingly similar to the first. Mcgrath provided the early breakthroughs, removing Taufeeq Umar and Younis Khan to leave Pakistan struggling at 12 for two. Andrew Bichel made further inroads by dismissing Imran Farhat cheaply and Faisal Iqbal ran himself out to a direct throw from substitute Nathan Hauritz from the deep. Hauritz was substituting for Justin Langer, who was hit on back of the neck at forward short leg by a drive from Raza earlier in the day. Warne wasted no time in exploiting the early pressure. Bowling with a lot of variation, the leg spinner dismissed Misba-ul Haq (17), Rashid Latif (17) and Saqlain Mushtaq (10), all falling lbw to his straighter deliveries. Raza dug in, in the company of Waqar, and the two put on 55 for the eighth wicket the only highpoint of the Pakistan innings before Waqar was caught off McGrath for 24. Earlier, when McGrath completed his 400 test dismissals he became the eighth man in history to join an exclusive club. West Indies Courtney Walsh leads the elite on 519, followed by Warne (477), Kapil Dev of India (434), New Zealands Richard Hadlee (431), Muttiah Muralitharan of Sri Lanka (430), Pakistans Wasim Akram (414) and Curtly Ambrose of West Indies (405). Pakistan had started the day on 163-6 in their first innings but when McGrath struck in his first over by bowling Saqlain for 44 and then cracking the 400 landmark, the familiar writing was on the wall. In the second test, Pakistan were bowled out for record lows of 59 and 53. (AGENCIES) |
Its official - medals of Sunita Rani stripped NEW DELHI, Oct 21: Drug-tainted distance runner Sunita Rani has been stripped of her gold and bronze medals that she won in the Busan Asian Games, it was officially confirmed today raising the possibility of an international ban on the athlete. The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) secretary general Randhir Singh told reporters here that he received a letter from the OCA task force yesterday confirming that the athlete had tested positive for an anabolic steroid and subsequently her medals have been stripped. "Both her `B samples taken after the 1500m and 5000m races have tested positive for nandrolone," Randhir Singh, also the secretary-general of Indian Olympic Association, said. "As per the rules laid down in the OCA constitution, I would like to inform that OCA has withdrawn the medals won by Ms Sunita and is referring the case to the concerned Asian and international federation for further necessary action," he said. Sunita, who won the gold in 1500m setting a new meet record time of 4 minutes, 6.03 seconds as well as the bronze in 5000m, will now have to return her medals to oca so that "the same can be forwarded to the other athletes who have replaced Ms Sunita in the medal standings". Indias Madhuri A Singh, who finished fourth in the 1500m, will get the bronze while Tatiana Borisova of Kyrgyzstan, who finished second, will get the gold and the silver will go to Japans Yoshiko Ichikawa. Indias medal tally now stands at 10 gold, 12 silver and 13 bronze medals pushing the country to the eighth position behind Taiwan. Emphasising that he was totally satisfied with the procedures followed, Randhir Singh said, "OCA has gone by the rule book. The doping facility at Seoul is accredited by International Olympic Committee and I can say it was not lax at all". Asked how was it that Sunita did not return a positive test before leaving for Busan, Randhir Singh said, "we do not have an IOC-accredited dope testing facility in the country". Randhir Singh said he was speaking strictly in his capacity as the OCA secretary general and he could not speak on the behalf of Indian Olympic Association. "It is upto the IOA president to decide on further action," he said passing the buck to Suresh Kalmadi. Kalmadi had yesterday announced a one-man committee to probe into the 22-year-old Sunitas case. "Oca can only strip the medals. Any decision to ban the athlete will have to be taken by the international athletics body. Or any further disciplinary action can be taken by the IOA or the Amateur Athletic Federation of India," Randhir Singh said. He said OCA was "satisfied" that only one athlete had returned positive test and the games overall were a clean one. "A Lebanese athlete had refused to give his sample for testing so his medal was withdrawn. Sunita was the only athlete who tested positive all the four times - that is her a samples taken after 1500m and 5000m as well as the B samples taken after both the races showed positive results." Randhir Singh said though blood or EPO tests were not carried out during the September 29-October 14 games, OCA may introduce the facility at the 15th edition of the games in Doha, Qatar. He also said if the probe committee concluded that the athlete had not committed an offence then he would take up her case with the OCA executive board. (PTI) |
