Farooq inaugurates All India Police Golf meet

SRINAGAR, Oct 17: The defeat in the just-concluded Assembly elections showed no signs on the face of caretaker Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah when he inaugurated the Sixth All India Police Golf Tournament here today.

Hitting the golf ball, Abdullah said golf is a game where a man’s accuracy and patience is put to test.

Accompanied by a host of policemen, who have descended at prestigious Royal Springs Golf course, Abdullah was only giving smiles to queries of reporters about the future of National Conference as no political party was ready to align with it in Government formation after the elections threw up a hung Assembly.

"Ask me something about golf," Abdullah said as he took a long round in the golf cart around the complex.

The tournament was to be inaugurated by Governor Girish Chander Saxena but Raj Bhavan sources said he could not do so as he was not well.

Nearly 72 policemen from almost all over the country are participating in the two-day tournament. (PTI)

Kapil slams BCCI for failing to create facilities

CHENNAI, Oct 17: Former Indian captain Kapil Dev today came down heavily on the cash-rich Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for failing to create best facilities for the game in the country.

"If the BCCI is the richest board in the world, why the hell it is keeping the money in banks. The richness should reflect in rich facilities for cricket", he observed at a press conference here.

"How can a player like me start an academy when land and one hundred more things are required for it?", he shot back when asked whether he had any plan to start an academy to produce fast bowlers.

The MRF could start a pace foundation because it had all the facilities, he said suggesting it was up to the board to come with such an initiative.

If the board started an academy, people like him, Sunil Gavaskar and Bishen Singh Bedi were willing to help, he said.

Asked whether he would make suggestion to the board, Kapil, striking a sarcastic tone, said: "There are hundreds of intelligent people sitting in the board and they can think better".

He just laughed away when asked what prevented the test players and first class cricketers from becoming members of the board.

On board’s move to change Indian wickets to international standards, Kapil said it was a belated but welcome move. "The BCCI should have taken the initiative ten years ago", he said.

He disagreed with ICC imposing restrictions on players vis a vis their signing contracts with companies for promoting their brands. "I don’t agree with this...They (ICC) can’t take away the rights of the players", he said.

A player who plays for a country and gave so much of entertainment has only a short career and should be allowed to make use of his short stint, he said. (UNI)

Kumble, Harbhajan wreck West Indies

CHENNAI, Oct 17: The Indian spin attack almost sealed West Indies’ hopes of making a comeback into the series as it bundled out the visitors for a paltry 167 on the opening day of the second cricket test here today.

Anil Kumble bagged five wickets while Harbhajan Singh scalped three victims as West Indies were shot out for a low total for the third time in this series.

Despite skipper Carl Hooper’s ultimatum to his players after his team lost the first test in Mumbai by a huge margin, West Indies put up another spineless batting performance and were unable to cope up with the guiles of Kumble and Harbhajan Singh.

The only resistance came from Hooper himself, who made a good-looking 35 off 38 balls, and Shivnarine Chanderpaul who has been performing consistently well against the Indian attack for quite some time now. Chanderpaul managed only 27 today but that was the second-highest score of the innings.

Kumble registered his best figures against the West Indies, today’s five for 30 improving upon his five for 104 at Port of Elizabeth in the 1996-97 series. It was also the spinner’s 20th five-wicket haul, becoming only the second Indian to achieve the feat, the first being Kapil Dev who has 23.

West Indies elected to bat on a newly-laid track at the Chidambaram Stadium but the batsmen failed to take the advantage of the decision.

Openers Chris Gayle and Wavell Hinds put on 40 runs for the first wicket but the only other worthwhile partnership was that between Hooper and Chanderpaul for the fourth wicket that fetched 55 runs for the team.

West Indies lost their last six wickets for 50 runs.

West Indies started very slowly with Gayle and Hinds looking determined not to lose any early wicket. The first nine overs produced just nine runs for the West Indies.

Javagal Srinath and Zaheer Khan bowled a tight line and length and with the two batsmen not interested in taking any risks, runs were very hard to come by.

It was only after the first hour of the morning session was over that Gayle decided to break the shackles. He hit Sanjay Bangar for three successive boundaries in an over before taking on the spinners Harbhajan Singh and Kumble.

But Gayle could not remain at the crease for long. While attempting to loft Harbhajan Singh over the midwicket, Gayle played against the spin and gave a tame catch to Sachin Tendulkar at point. Gayle made 23 and West Indies lost their first wicket in the 25th over.

The visitors took lunch at 45 for one after which they lost three quick wickets to slip back to 62 for three. Kumble, celebrating his 32nd birthday today, had Wavell Hinds trapped Leg Before Wicket for 18 before Ramnaresh Sarwan played a Srinath delivery on to his stumps after making 19 runs.

Hooper and Chanderpaul then tried to rebuild the innings in the most fruitful partnership of the day. Hooper, who had criticised his batsmen for their lack of application in the Mumbai test, looked determined to lead by example and batted positively and was quite impressive against the spinners.

He did survive a couple of close calls but was well in control till Zaheer Khan deceived him with a well-disguised slower delivery. Hooper, who struck six boundaries during his 66-minute stay at the crease, committed himself into the drive early and scooped a simple catch to Sourav Ganguly at covers.

The fall of Hooper just before the tea break dealt a severe blow to the West Indian hopes of putting up a good total and their fortunes now depended solely on Chanderpaul.

However, the left-handed Chanderpaul, who had tormented the Indian bowlers during the series in West Indies earlier this year, became one of the victims of Kumble in the final session in a devastating third spell that saw the veteran leg-spinner grab four wickets for ten runs in 8.3 overs.

Chanderpaul was beaten by the awkward bounce of a delivery that rose sharply after pitching and edged it to wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel who took a good chest-level catch.

Chanderpaul’s dismissal at 135 virtually signalled the end of West Indian innings as the rest of the batsmen caved in meekly.

Debutant Jermaine Lawson, who replaced Cameron Cuffy as one of the two changes in the West Indian squad - the other being Gareth Breese coming in for Mahendra Nagamootoo -became the ninth West Indian batsman to score a nought in his first test match. (PTI)

Athletes return to rousing welcome

NEW DELHI, Oct 17: The Sunita Rani doping scandal, that dealt a severe blow to India’s reputation at the 14th Asian Games, failed to take away the flamboyance and upbeat moods of the athletes, who were accorded a rousing red carpet welcome after they returned from Busan here late last night.

Amid loud music and slogans of glory and joy, more than 30 top athletes of the country including star athlete K M Beenamol, who won two golds for the country, gold medallists Bahadur Singh, Anju Bobby George, Saraswati Saha, Neelam J Singh and coaches took the centrestage at the Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Hundreds of enthusiastic fans, school childrens, officials and mediapersons who kept pouring in since 2000hrs, were thrilled to see the athletes arrive about midnight followed by rush for autographs, rounds of interviews and "grilling" of the officials for the dope scandal.

Double gold medallist at the Asiad, K M Beenamol was the cynosure of all eyes. An esctatic Beenamol said she was extremely happy for her good show at the Asiad but was little disappointed in not winning the third for the country — the women’s 400m. "I hope to repeat my performance in next year’s inaugural Afro-Asian Games in New Delhi...I am also looking forward to get a medal at the Athens Olympics in 2004," she added.

Beenamol, who won a gold each in women’s 800m and 4x400m relay and a silver in 400m, said her hard work over the last four years bore fruit in Busan. The tall and good looking Anju Bobby George, who had also broken the Asian Games in the women’s long jump with an effort of 6.74m, said getting a gold was great but her ambition is to jump a distance of seven metres. "Now I am looking forward to Afro-Asian Games and want to get a gold at the Afro-Asian Games," she noted.

Neelam J Singh, who broke the Asian Games record in women’s discus throw, said she was confident of winning a medal at the Asiad but the record came as a surprise. "It was sheer hard work and consistent performance that has given me the dividends at this level...I was throwing a consistent 60m in the entire season," she noted. Neelam set an asian games record of 64.55m to take the gold.

Bahadur Singh said he was extremely happy to get the medal and was hopeful of getting a gold at the Afro-Asian Games. "The level at the Asian Games are very high and it was great to win a gold at this level," he added.

Indian Olympic Association president Suresh Kalmadi said the athletes have made the country proud and IOA was extremely happy and overwhelmed at this performance. "Athletes have broken a 40 years record and won as many as 15 medals (excluding Sunita Rani’s medals) — including six golds...This is the second best performance by the athletes," he added.

The Indian Amatuer Athletics Federation secretary Lalit Kumar Bhanot said the performance of the athletes at the Asiad would go a long way in the development of the athletics in the country. "We are now looking forward to Afro-Asian Games and achieve a similar feat there as well," he said. (UNI)

Excelsior Sports Correspondent

SRINAGAR, Oct 17: The caretaker Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Dr Farooq Abdullah today inaugurated the Sixth All India Police Golf Tournament at the prestigious Royal Springs Golf course, here.

Haryana builds huge total against J&K in
Cooch Behar U-19 Cricket

Excelsior Sports Correspondent

JAMMU, Oct 17: On the first day of three-day league tie of the North-Zone U-19 Cooch Behar Cricket Tournament, Haryana set a tall score of 457 against hosts Jammu and Kashmir with the help of an unbeaten century (137, 4x6, 14x4) coming from Sachin Rana at M A Stadium, here today.

After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Haryana lost early wicket in the shape of Kailash Sein, but they strengthened their innings and added 119 runs for the second wicket. Kailash stayed at the wicket for 74 minutes and faced 51 delivers to make 11 runs. He was caught by Ubaid Bashir off medium pacer Abid Nabi.

J&K bowlers build-up some pressure but it was too late because the guest batsmen had already started hitting the J&K bowlers hard, especially Sachin Rana, who kept the one end busy adding quick runs to the score.

Skipper Asif Jeelani and off-spinner, Vikarsh Kaw took two wickets each, out of the first four wickets only when these batsmen had already crossed the half-century mark and started making big shots.

Opener Manvinder Bisla, who stayed at the wicket for 133 minutes made quick-fire 78 runs off 94 balls including ten hits to the fence. Sunny was caught by Sajjad off Asif Jeelani scored 56 facing just 44 deliveries with eight fours.

Pardeep Sahu, who was caught by Mahul Chowdhary off Vimarsh Kaw made 52 runs (off 43 balls, 1x6, 6x4). Vikram Dhariwal played slow but steady innings of 58 runs and became Kaw’s second victim. At the time Vikram lost his wicket, the score had already cross 250 mark.

In the post lunch session, Vimarsh Kaw troubled the Haryana batsmen and took three more wickets completing five wickets haul (20-5-96-5). On the other hand, Sawar Ahmed, right-arm leg spinner, proved to the most costly bowler, who gave away 89 runs in 11 overs without taking any wicket.

Since, J&K bowlers had tightened their grip and slowed down the innings, Haryana lost two wickets at the same score of 300. When hosts were looking at sending the guests to pavilion below 400 runs mark, the last wicket partnership yielded 60 runs bringing the final score to 457 in 87.4 overs.

Now, J&K will launch their campaign to chase the mammoth total tomorrow morning.

Broken commentary box, uneven outfield greet teams at M A Stadium

Broken commentary box (scorers room) and uneven outfield greeted the teams of Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir in the North Zone Cooch Behar under-19 Cricket Tournament at M A Stadium, courtesy State Sports Council.

The ceilingless commentary box has not been repaired ever since it was damaged by the strong winds three months back. The uneven outfield was there because of the laying of fresh layer of earth by the State Sports Council again around three months back.

However, the extra hardwork put-in by the Manager M A Stadium and Sports Officer, Jammu, somehow made the turf playable.

Anand, Humpy draw; Stefenova wins

HYDERABAD, Oct 17: Defending champion Viswanathan Anand and the in-form Koneru Humpy settled for draws while Woman Grandmaster Stefenova Antoneta of Bulgaria defeated Svetlana Matveeva of Russia for the only victory in the first round semifinal matches of the World Cup Chess Tournament here today.

Draws seemed to be the order of the day and but for Stefenova, who won in 40 moves, the rest of the boards saw players playing it safe.

Anand forced a draw against Alexy Dreev of Russia with relative ease while humpy survived some anxious moments before splitting the point against reigning champion Xu Yuhua of China.

Alexander Beliavsky of Slovenia and Rustam Kasimdzhanov of Uzbekistan too played safe in the first round and agreed to split the point after 50 moves to breathe life and interest into tomorrow’s second round matches which may move into tiebreak games.

Playing with black pieces, Anand employed the queen’s Indian defence against the Russian and the duo was involved in some tactical play before agreeing for truce after 22 moves.

"I am happy with the draw," Anand said after the match.

"When playing whites there are not much problems but when you have black pieces you have to be very careful," the current world number three said.

Playing black against Yuhua, Grandmaster Humpy adopted the petroff defence and was troubled often by the Chinese Champion.

However, Humpy fought back with grit and determination and unleashed a strong counterplay. The endgame resulted in opposite colour bishops and the two players agreed for a draw after 45 moves.

Stefenova opted for the slav defence against Svetlana. Showing her mastery in counter-attack, Stefenova warned a piece to pull off a superb victory in 40 moves.

In the other men’s semi-final match, rustam put up a brave fight against belivsky in a queen’s gambit variation but they agreed to sort out the issue tomorrow though rustam had two extra pawns against his opponent’s bishop.

Anand had applied the same strategy of drawing the first round match of the quarter-finals against Russian Grandmaster Vladamir Malakhov with black but went all out in the second game with whites.

Results:

Semi-finals (1st round): Viswanathan Anand (Ind) 0.5 drew with Alexy Dreev (Russia) 0.5, Alexander Beliavsky (Slovenia) 0.5 drew with Rustam Kasimdzhanov (Uzbekistan) 0.5.

Women: Xu Yuhua (China) 0.5 drew with Koneru Humpy (ind) 0.6, Stefenova Antoneta (Bulgaria) 1 beat Svetlana Matveea (Russia) 0. (PTI)

I’ll play as long as I can deliver with ball: Kumble

CHENNAI, Oct 17: Asserting that he cannot be bogged down by critics, ace leg spinner Anil Kumble today said he will play as long as he feels he is good.

Talking to the media after ringing in his birthday with a five-wicket haul for the 20th time in his career, spanning 75 tests, he said "I am not here to answer critics. I feel that I can deliver with the ball and I will be playing so long as I feel that way".

Kumble’s exploits on a slow bouncy virgin track in tandem with offie Harbhajan Singh’s three-wicket haul, helped India skittle out West Indies for a paltry 167 runs on the first day of the second test match today, virtually setting the stage for an encore of the 1987-88 test at the same venue, in which debutant Narendra Hirwani picked up 16 wickets to fashion the humiliating 255-run defeat of the Viv Richards-led Carribeans.
