Equestrian bronze all for India on day six BUSAN, Oct 4: Once again India had to remain content with just one medal in an entire day, a bronze fetched in the Equestrian team eventing, but the performance of boxer Mohd Ali Qamar and mens hockey team brought some cheers to the Indian camp on the sixth day of the Asian Games here today. Qamar, gold medallist at the Manchester Commonwealth Games, defeated his Pakistani opponent to move into quarter-finals of light flyweight category, while the hockey team put up a spirited display to draw 1-1 against South Korea in their last league match and set up a likely semi-final showdown with Pakistan. However, it was the equestrian team comprising Indrajit Lamba, Bhagirath Singh, Rajesh Pattu and Deep Ahlawat, which brought the days only honour, finishing third in the team eventing conceding 224.08 points. The Equestrian teams contribution took Indias medal tally to five - one gold, two silver and two bronze - but the country slipped to the 12th position in the medals table. There was disappointment in tennis team event with India crashing out in both the mens and womens categories at the quarter-final stage. The mens team was ousted by Uzbekistan with a 0-3 result despite the star performers Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi playing in the tie while the women lost 0-2 to Chinese Taipei. After winning a silver each on the two previous days, the shooters drew a blank today while Yasin Merchant, who won Indias only gold medal so far in company of Rafath Habib, lost his singles match in snooker individual event. The Indian Equestrian team, who were in the fourth position after the completion of the cross country section yesterday, put up a superb display in the jumping competition today which ensured a podium finish for them. In the individual competition however, the Indians failed to make a mark with Indrajit Lamba, riding tipsy, being the best placed at 10th place. Bhagirath Singh, on Sagar, and Rajesh Pattu, on Shahzada, finished in 13th and 14th positions respectively. The hockey team, seeking to defend the gold medal it won in Bangkok, controlled the game for most of the time but had to settle for a draw. Daljit Singh scored the equaliser for India in the tenth minute of the second half after South Korea took the lead in the fourth minute of the match through Jong Ha Jeon. The result left both the teams on seven points with two wins and a draw each but South Korea emerged at the top of Group A due to a better goal average. With Pakistan likely to top the other group, the stage is set for an Indo-Pak clash for the third time in just over a month. The two teams met twice in the Champions Trophy in Cologne last month and won a match each. The mens volleyball team finally won a match, defeating Macau 3-0 in a Pool A league game. But the victory came too late as they have already crashed out of medal contention after suffering defeats to China and Iran in earlier matches. Having won the title every time since the games Asiad debut in 1990, the Indian kabaddi team began their campaign in style scoring fluent victories in their first two matches today. They defeated Malaysia 39-2 in the first match and followed it with a 39-3 victory over Japan to keep themselves on track for a fourth successive gold medal. In the shooting ranges, the womens team of Anjali Bhagwat, Raj Kumari and Kuheli Gangulee finished seventh in the 50m rifle prone event with a total of 1738 points. With their favourite events yet to come, the shooters are however expected to bag a few medals later in the competition. (PTI) |

ICC calls for national players association NEW DELHI, Oct 4: Even as the five member review committee takes charge to resolve the players sponsorship row, the International Cricket Council (ICC) today cleared the decks by asking respective boards to recognise their own players association. With the "national players associations in place, the review committee can interact with them to resolve issues regarding the players terms agreement well ahead of the World Cup to avoid any controversy on the eve of the World Cup like the one that cropped up before the Champions Trophy. The ICC today said that it was imperative for countries to have player associations recognised by their boards before the ICC would be able to deal at the international level with a representative body such as the Federation of International Cricketers Association (FICA), according to information received here. ICC president Malcolm Gray said, "it would be simpler for the ICC to deal with one body that represented the players, but the reality is five countries regard the issue of dealing with commercial and management matters as the exclusive right of the home board and the ICC should not have a direct role with the players in this area." "This issue has been discussed and debated by the ICC board on several occasions and ICC management has argued strongly for an increased role for player representation in management areas at the international level,"said Mr Gray. "Despite a majority of the ICC board being in favour of player representation at management level, five countries (Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, and South Africa) opposed the proposal. This meant that under ICC voting structure the proposal was defeated." "If player representation is to take place at the international level, it is up to the players in these countries to convince their boards of the value of having this type of system. There is little point in getting upset or angry". "The reality is the boards of five countries do not accept that the players should be represented internationally on these issues, "Mr Gray added. Earlier, on Sunday the ICC decided to constitute a special five-member review committee and revamp the players cricketing committee to review any controversies arising out of players terms before the World Cup in 2003. The review committee, comprising Mr Gray, ICC CEO Mr Speed, BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya, Australian Cricket Board chairman Bob Marriman and ICC vice-president Ehsan Mani, has been put in place only for the World Cup. The ICC top bosses said the issues had to be resolved by mid-november well ahead of the World Cup beginning in South Africa in February next. The committee is empowered to take any decision with regard to players terms. An independent member, with comprehensive legal and commercial background would also be appointed to the committee. The ICC board has also decided to restructure the cricket committee (playing) headed by former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar, by allowing the captains and the boards of the ten member countries to appoint/elect/nominate their representatives to it. "It must be recognised that cultural and industrial relations environments in all countries vary greatly among the ICC members," Mr Gray said. "I have seen comments from some player representatives who are upset about this and my only response is that FICA needs to stop putting the cart before the horse". "Therefore, the players need to work constructively with their employers if they want to change this view," Mr Gray said. (UNI) |

Anand to defend title in World Cup HYDERABAD, Oct 4: The stage is set for an exciting second Chess World Cup with both Vishwanathan Anand of India and Chen Zhu of China confirming their participation to defend their respective titles for men and women in the USD 280,000 tournament beginning at the Ramojoi film city near here from October 9. "Fide has nominated Surya Sekhar Ganguly and S Meenakshi for the tournament," FIDE vice president P T Ummer Koya told reporters here today while releasing a final list of players in the men and women sections here today. (PTI) Mongias ton props up Board President XI BANGALORE, Oct 4: A brilliant ton by Dinesh Mongia (101) enabled Board Presidents XI pile up 275 for eight (declared) against West Indies on the opening day of the three-day tie here today. In reply the Caribbeans were 20 for no loss in their first innings at close. Precariously placed at 17/2, after skipper Mohammed Kaif won the toss and elected to bat, Board Presidents XI recovered through Hemang Badani (67) and Kaif (40) who put on 91 for the third wicket. The subsequent hurricane knock of Mongia frustrated the young bowlers of the Windies as he belted three huge sixes and 12 fours. He was also involved in two half century partnerships with Badani and Amit Mishra (10) for the fourth and fifth wicket respectively. Even as the Indian batsmen blasted the Caribbean bowlers, West Indies coach Roger Harper came down heavily on the poor quality of balls used in the tie stating that it was getting soggy and wet leading to frequent change of balls. He was however in full praise of Mongias knock as he sent the Windies bowlers on a leather hunt. West Indies speedster Mervyn Dillion, who struck early blows claiming wickets of openers Sanjay Bangar (2) and Gautam Gambhir (11), could not sustain his attack as Badani and Mongia blasted him to all corners of the field. Badani, who seemed to have settled well and heading for a century, was taken aback when the middle stump fell off Pedro Collins superb bowling. Kaif was to go next when he was brilliantly caught at gully by Ramnaresh Sarwan of Carl Hooper. Then came a sudden slump for President XI with Parthiv Patel (5), Murali Karthik (1) and Sardeep Singh returning to the pavilion. For the West Indies, besides Dillion, Jermaine Lawson claimed two wickets conceeding 57 runs, while Pedro Collins, spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo and skipper Carl Hooper claimed one wicket each conceeding 52, 56 and 48 runs respectively. Roger Harper said that first two sessions his bowlers did well. But they failed to tighten subsequently. (UNI) |
