Excelsior Correspondent HIRANAGAR, Oct 3: A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) and two Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terrorists, involved in Tuesday mornings strike here, were killed while two police constables were seriously injured in a fierce exchange of gun-battle this morning. Security forces continued a hunt for the third terrorist but he hadnt been spotted so far. DySP Police Lines, Kathua Jagtar Pal Singh, who was leading one of the police teams from the front, was killed while fighting bravely in an eyeball-to-eyeball encounter with two terrorists in a nullah behind Christian Convent School adjoining Hiranagar stadium in the town here, about three kms from Jammu-Pathankot national highway, in wee hours of this morning. Two police constables, accompanying him, were seriously injured, police sources said. They said the troops of 19 Brigade, who had fanned out in Hiranagar town and the highway after October 1 strike by three terrorists in which eight civilians were killed and 10 others were injured, intercepted a message of the terrorists which they were passing on to a LeT commander across the border on a sophisticated wireless set late last night. The terrorists told their commander that they had been trapped near a nullah and were not aware of the route leading to the International Border. They sought the help of a guide to take them back to Pakistan. However, according to sources, the commander expressed his helplessness in arranging a guide for the terrorists and asked them to walk along the nullah, which would take them to the border. Soon after intercepting message, the troops of 19 Brigade led by Brigade Commander Patil took positions along the nullah and started search for the terrorists. Police parties from Kathua led by SP Amzad Pervez Mirza and CRPF teams led by Commander RPS Rana also reached the spot. Sources said DySP Lines Jagtar Pal Singh, about 42, was specially chosen for the operation as he had worked in the Special Operations Group (SOG) for several years in the Kashmir valley and other areas. Police parties led by Singh came across one of the terrorist around 0400 hours today and fired upon him. The terrorist fell down and police parties presuming him as dead moved ahead to pick-up his body. However, the terrorist, who was alive, opened firing with an AK-47 rifle wounding Jagtar Singh and two constables. Despite being injured, the DySP and his cops fired back killing the terrorist on spot. Injured DySP succumbed to his injuries while being evacuated to the hospital. Two injured constables identified as Ghulam Qadir and Rahul Bahadur have been shifted to the Medical College hospital, where their condition was stated to be serious but, doctors said, they were responding to the treatment. In the meantime, army personnel also took positions and chased the second terrorist, who made an unsuccessful attempt to enter the Christian Convent School. By 0930 hours, the troops succeeded in eliminating the absconding terrorist in the nullah. Army and police continued searches in the nullah and surrounding villages for next hours but couldnt locate the third terrorist. Sources said all eye-witnesses including a mini-bus operator, whose vehicle had been hijacked by the terrorists on Tuesday morning to reach the highway, had confirmed presence of three terrorists. In the afternoon, security forces shifted their search teams towards village Jandi, where the absconding terrorist could be hiding. However, he hadnt been traced so far. Recoveries made from the encounter site included two AK-47 rifles, three Mousers, 18 grenades, ammunition of AK rifles and Mousers, one wireless set and one Japan-made compass. Bodies of both the terrorists were shifted to a local police post this afternoon. Police identified them as Abu Talha and Abu Usmaan. Slain terrorists were affiliated with Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) outfit and were aged between 18 to 20. Both of them were believed to be Pakistanis. Meanwhile, body of DySP Jagtar Singh was shifted to his residence at Channi Himmat late this afternoon. An awardee of several medals, Singh was involved in a number of successful operations against the terrorists in the Kashmir valley and other areas during his posting in the SOG. His body will be cremated at Channi Himmat cremation ground at 10 AM on Friday with full police honours. Investigations carried out by police revealed that the terrorists after striking in Hiranagar on the day of polling in Kathua district on October 1 had escaped towards a forest area of Sube Chak. One of the terrorists was separated from his two associates in the forest area. Since the terrorist at large didnt have a wireless set, he couldnt communicate with his associates or across the border. Due to this, security agencies were finding it difficult to locate him, the sources said. "The fact that the terrorists moved in the forests for two days and nights clearly indicated that they didnt enjoy any local support in the area", they said. As the reports of encounter near the town here spread early today, the people locked themselves in their houses. Markets in the town and adjoining villages also remained closed till late this afternoon. Police had also suspended traffic on the national highway in view of the operation. Traffic was restored at 12 noon. As reported, the terrorists had struck at Hiranagar Morh on the national highway at 0600 hours on Tuesday morning, barely an hour before the polling was scheduled to begin, killing eight civilians and injuring 10 others. The terrorists had escaped after the strike. Jagtar Singh was second DySP killed in an anti-militancy operation in Kathua district in less than one year. On October 27 last year, DySP Billawar Devinder Sharma and a constable were killed in an IED explosion in upper reaches of Billawar when they were returning from a search operation. |
Another Pak attempt to
disrupt polls in Doda foiled Excelsior Defence Correspondent PATRI (LoC), Mendhar, Oct 3: Alert Indian troops gunned down eight heavily armed Pak militants, including an area commander, when they crossed over to this side of the Line of Control (LoC) from Patri area of Balakot in Mendhar sector of Poonch during early hours today. All the eight Pak infiltrators were trapped by the soldiers in a small nullah, hardly 800 metres inside the LoC, and killed during 12-hour long gun-battle. The troops also lost an officerCapt D K Jha, and Lance Naik, Raj Kumar, in the operation. All the slain terrorists belonged to Lashker-e-Toiba outfit and they hailed from Hafizabad in Pakistan. Briefing mediapersons at the site of encounter, Brig. Kanwar Vijay Singh Lalotra disclosed that at around 8.15 pm, an ambush party in the forward area noticed the movement of a group of eight heavily armed militants trying to sneak into this side through thick bushes. The jawans alerted the other soldiers at adjoining nakka points. The infiltrators, as a strategy, were allowed to move deep inside the Indian territory to fall into the trap. When they moved closer to Dholak hamlet, just adjoining Patri village near a pucca road and were passing through a nullah, the troops led by Col S K Saini, Major Tanveer and Capt Jha challenged them and asked to surrender. The ultras, without caring for the warnings, took positions and resorted to firing on the troops. The militants used AK-47 rifles, grenade launchers and even the rocket launchers during this gun-battle. Brig Lalotra, commanding the Jat Regiment of Bhimber Gali Brigade who himself supervised the entire night- long operation, further disclosed that it was pitch dark. Naturally, the visibility was almost nill. The troops used para-bombs to illuminate the area and observe the movement of terrorists. Six of them were shot dead in first four-five hours of operation while two others continued to fight with the troops despite being encircled from all the sides, hiding behind a bolder in the nullah. One of them, though injured and found profusely bleeding, continued to fight. The seventh ultra was killed around 6.30 am while the last one was eliminated about two hours later. Huge quantities of arms and ammunitions, including highly sophisticated communication equipment, eight wireless sets, six rocket launchers, 16 rockets, 8 grenade launchers, large number of hand-grenades, IEDs, ammunition, eight AK-47 rifles, 37 magazines, were recovered from their possession. Several un-exploded grenades were seen scattered at the site. The bodies of two militants had blown up badly with the impact of grenade explosions. The militants were later identified from the documents recovered from their possession. They are: Abu Qasim Kashmiri, Mohd Zameer, Abu Ins Kashmiri, Abu Mudassar Gujjar, Abu Mauz Askari, Abu Mohammed alias Yousuf Kashmiri, Abu Naaz, Shah Faizal alias Abu Mabiaall hailing from Hafizabad area of Pakistan. They were in the age group of 20 to 30 years. Abu Kashmiri (Code name) was said to be the commander of the group which was proceeding towards Banihal area of district Doda. These ultras were launched from PoK launching Pad, Lanjot, and were bound for Doda, where elections are being held on Oct 8. Six of them were carrying rocket launchers on their shoulders, having capacity to blow up buildings and even moving vehicles from a distance ranging from 600 to 800 meters, the Brig said. Though the army authorities at Mendhar did not confirm any casualty on our side, the intelligence inputs indicated that Capt Jha of Jat Regiment who was leading a column and was seriously injured in the operation, later succumbed. Lance Naik, Raj Kumar, who also sustained bullet injuries in the operation, was shifted to Rajouri hospital where he succumbed to his injuries this morning. Responding to a question, Brigade Commander said that in just last one month, 25 Pakistani infiltrators were killed in his area of operation in seven different incidents. This group of eight, gave a tough fight and all of them were carrying huge ammunition and their own wireless sets with very high frequency. They were passing on information to their bosses on that side of the LoC through sets during the battle. Interestingly, they were also carrying letters from the families of the Pakistani militants operating in J&K. Huge quantity of incriminating material, photographs of some of their family members passport size photographs, medicines, toffees, fake I-cards etc. were also recovered from their possession. Brig Lalotra said it was major infiltration attempt of Pakistan trained militants in BG sector, foiled by the troops successfully. Without the support of Pak army such intrusion is not possible, he maintained. |
My innovative ideas will transform State: Omar Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Oct 3: National Conference president and Chief Ministerial candidate, Mr Omar Abdullah today said he has come to the people of the State with a new agenda, fresh innovative and modern ideas which will transform the State. Addressing a big election gathering at Doda today, Mr Omar said that he doesnt believe in false promises because he knows he has to form the Government and he should promise what he can implement. He told a cheering crowd that his actions, once he is in the Government, will speak themselves because he has drawn out blue-print for the State which will address to the problems of the public at large. Lashing out at the Congress, the NC chief blamed the party for the ills in the polity of the country. He said that the problems faced by the State today are manifestation of the wrong policies of different Congress Governments at the Centre who have always played with the destiny of the people of the State by their manipulative politics to run the State through puppet Governments. The NCs Chief Ministerial candidate had a dig on Pradesh Congress president Ghulam Nabi Azad, who, he said should have jumped in the electoral fray to prove his credentials as a representative of the people of the State. Mr Omar said that he had dared Mr Azad to contest from any Assembly segment of the State, but he ( Azad) preferred to play safe because he knew he would lose his security deposit as he did once 20 years back. Later, addressing a public gathering at Troun near Doda, Mr Omar said Doda has a huge tourism potential which needs to be harnessed but for that to be done, he said that gun culture must stop. He said that he was confident that the peoples enthusiasm seen by the world community in the elections will definitely bring lot of pressure on Pakistan from the world to stop the proxy war unleashed by that country and this he said will bring peace in the State. Addressing another gathering at Bhaderwah, Mr Omar said that National Conference will always stand for secularism, brotherhood, unity and integrity of the State. He appealed to the people of Bhaderwah to maintain the spirit of brotherhood and teach a lesson through ballot to those who were trying to divide the people of the State on the basis of caste, creed or religion. The NC chief said that if returned to power, his party will ensure that clean drinking water is made available in all the villages of the State alongwith modern health and education facilities. |
Two Al-Badr ultras, 2 civilians killed Excelsior Correspondent UDHAMPUR, Oct 3: Two terrorists of Al-Badr outfit and two civilians including a Chowkidar were killed in three separate incidents in Udhampur and Doda districts overnight. Official sources said security forces intercepted two terrorists in a forest area of Mahore early this morning and asked them to surrender. However, the terrorists opened firing and started running towards deep into the forests. Security personnel replied the firing. Exchange of firing between the two sides lasted about one hour in which both the terrorists were killed. They have been identified as Sayed Abidha Shah and Abu Sayed. Shah was a deputy area commander of Al-Badr outfit for Mahore tehsil. Two AK rifles with ammunition, two hand grenades and one radio set were recovered from the terrorists, the sources said, adding that troops didnt suffer any casualties in the operation. With the killing of two Al-Badr terrorists, security forces have eliminated a total of four ultras in Mahore tehsil during last three days. Meanwhile, a group of three terrorists last night struck at village Sara under Dessa police station in Doda district and gunned down village Chowkidar Chatar Singh son of Tota Ram Thakur in his house. The terrorists escaped after the killing. A police party from Dessa visited the village this morning and carried out an unsuccessful search operation for the terrorists. Another civilian Sajad Ahmed Mir S/o Gaja Din R/o Khushu Thwa Tanta in Thathri area of Doda was also shot dead by two terrorists in his house last mid-night. A police party, which visited the spot, handed over body of the civilian to his family after post-mortem. No reasons could be ascertained behind the two civilian casualties, the sources said. |
4 ultras, civilian killed CRPF vehicle blown up Excelsior Correspondent SRINAGAR, Oct 3: Even as four militants and a civilian have died in militancy-related incidents in north Kashmir, militants blew up a CRPF vehicle in south Kashmir, causing injuries to three persons, including an Inspector, today. Informed sources told EXCELSIOR that two infiltrators were gunned down by the troops of 18 Madras at Eagle Post in Kupwara sector this evening. Three other militants managed to escape back to Pakistan. Another militant was killed by the troops of 47 RR and SOG Kupwara in a joint operation today at Trish, Nutmusa in Kupwara district. Two civilians were injured in an accident blast at Dardpora in Kupwara this evening. Militants targeted a vehicle of CRPF 14th Bn at Turkawangam in Shopian area of south Kashmir. The vehicles suffered extensive damage in the powerful IED blast and two personnel sustained injuries. They were identified as Inspector I L Patwari and Sub Inspector S M Shelly. The driver of a civil truck, Jehangir Ahmed Malik S/o Mohamad Yaseen Malik R/o Khurampora, also sustained injuries. Both the critically injured paramiliatries as also the civilian were rushed to hospital. This was the third consecutive blast in Pulwama district since Tuesday. On Tuesday, seven BSF officials had got killed in a landmine blast near Awantipora while as five BSF soldiers died in an IED blast in Pastuna area of Tral on Wednesday. One woman, namely Saja wife of late Abdul Gani Bhat R/o Tengpawa sustained injuries when militants fired upon a patrol party of security forces at Danwathpora in Anantnag district. Reportedly, he had been kidnapped by militants. |
NC winning 20 seats,
courtesy triangular contests From Ahmed Ali Fayyaz SRINAGAR, Oct 3: If not the Hurriyat conglomerate, but some of separatist parties have remarkably compromised their interpretation of the Azadi around the timing of the current Assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir. "Azadi from NC" is the buzzword in a section of the separatist camp. Mufti Mohammad Sayeeds Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has also been dismissing the National Conference (NC) as a stumbling block in the resolution of the Kashmir dispute. Its prime stress is also on the "Azadi from NC". Jammu & Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president Ghulam Nabi Azad too laid enough of stress on liberating the State from the "NCs misrule". Nevertheless, the fact of the matter is that Congress, PDP and the Hurriyat contributed a lot to the NCs prospects. Due to the low turnout of voters, NC emerged victorious in over a dozen segments in Kashmir valley. Hurriyats boycott and the militants threats and disruptive acts played the most prominent role in it. After his return from the United States of America, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq portrayed a bit of political maturity but that was too late. In a television interview, that came on the eve of the Phase-II of polling, Mirwaiz decreed that the coercion of putting the electorate indoors was unjustified in the civilised world. Being too late, that failed to make an impact. It is a lay mans guess that in the absence of intimidation from militants, security forces action of pushing the voters to the polling stations would have been unacceptable to the world. Peoples boycott would have been properly registered. On the other hand, the NC would have lost over a dozen of segments, which it bagged thanks to the boycott and low turnout. Notwithstanding a very favourable atmosphere, the Opposition stalwarts, Azad and Mufti, failed to reach an understanding over sharing of seats. At least, an NDA-type alliance was well possible in the Valley where the PDP has emerged as the main Opposition party and the Congress too had some impact in five or six segments. Both the parties withdrew their contestants in a few segments but that failed to yield the desired results. In Kashmir valley alone, the NC may bag eight segments due to the triangular contest. Because of distribution of the Opposition vote, the NC has good prospects in about a dozen segments in Jammu region. However, given the arch rivals like Congress and the BJP, an alliance was pretty difficult in Jammu. Trends witnessed in the three phases of polling may be surprising for the NC but the PDP and the Congress are the worse losers. Amirakadal segment in Srinagar city is the only segment in the Valley, where Congress has very bright prospects. Vice President, Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed, has only diminished chances in Kokernag as the PDP candidate Ghulam Rasool Malik is well in the field. More surprisingly, the PDP is tipped to lose Langet, in Kupwara district, as most of its votes were shared by the Congress candidate Mohammad Amin Khan. NCs Sharif-ud-din Shariq is well emerging as the beneficiary. PDPs Mohammad Sultan Panditpuri had defeated NCs Bashir Ahmed Wani (Kar) in the by-elections of 1999 in Langet. Similarly, NCs Javed Hussain Shah is taking the benefit of the split of opposition vote between Awami Leagues Usman Majeed and the potential Congress candidate Habibullah Bhat in Bandipore. In Rafiabad too, the NC incumbent Mohammad Dilawar Mir is the obvious beneficiary of the triangular contest. Here again, the PDP nominee Javed Ahmed Dar and the Congress candidate Abdul Gani Vakil polled about 60% of the vote. There are clear indications of Mirs victory. A similar situation was witnessed in Sangrama segment of Baramulla district. The votes polled here were equally divided between PDPs Dr Ghulam Nabi Lone, NCs Mohammad Yusuf Bhat and the Congress candidate Mohammad Muzaffar Parray. In case NC happened to lose Sangrama to the PDP, credit must singularly go the Army officer who arrested the elderly mother of a Hizbul Mujahideen militant in Kreeri, hours before the polling, and created an explosive situation. Hundreds of angry people came out on the streets in protest and torched the vehicle of a ruling party activist. Few voters turned up in the traditional NC stronghold, particularly in the Kreeri belt. In Budgam too, the PDP must claim credit of the NC candidate Aga Ruhullas possible victory. While the NC rebel Aga Mehmood is in a neck-and-neck fight with Ruhullah, PDPs Mohammad Kamaal Malik bagged around 3,500 Sunni votes in Soibug belt alone. In his absence, most of these votes would have gone to the potential Independent candidate Aga Mehmood. PDP even put up its own candidate against the winning Independent, Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen, in Khansahib. However, the former militant, Bilal Lodhi, failed to cut much of the ice. (To be continued) |
Shadow of the gun By B L Kak JAMMU, Oct 3: Oft-repeated term-that is, show must go on- seems to have formed an important facet of the social life and political order in Jammu region. Continuing terrorist strikes and killing of innocent civilians and security personnel havent prevented people from going about their normal avocation. Shooting bullets from and bomb blasts by terrorists have, of late, become a normal phenomenon. "Hence, nothing abnormal, nothing unusual, nothing unexpected", is a familiar refrain these days. Significant, indeed, is this approach. Equally normal is the behaviourial system of the average Jammuite-that is, measured response to most of the terrorist hits. These hits have been termed by Pakistani actors as "thunder-balls". Now-a-days the locals in Jammu dont appear wonderstruck by all that has happened in the past few days, particularly in the vicinity of Jammu and adjoining areas. This trend is totally different from the one experienced several years ago. Gone are the days when even a minor law and order problem triggered a major commotion in many parts of the Jammu region. Those were the days when the average Jammuite had enough time to attend to issues such as organising public demonstrations, forcing closure of markets and business estalbishments and paralysing public transport system. There is no denying that the presence of Pakistan-sponsored ultras in the Jammu region, including the vicinity of Jammu, has led many people to ask: What next? But the locals of the region, by and large, seem to have learnt to live with the system that has evolved over the years- the system of insurgency, militancy and terrorism. Almost a decade ago, activity in places of entertainment such as cinema houses, hotels, restaurants and bars serving liquor came to a halt, more often than not, in any untoward, unpleasant happening. No, not now. The policy of "you-turn-to-earn" adopted by large sections of the populace seems to have injected a new element into the scenario. In other words, a local in the Jammu region, particularly in the capital city of Jammu, isnt sitting on the debris of doubts. Significance is also attached to the attitude adopted by most locals in border areas towards the gun culture, which continues to be nourished and widened by Pakistan and Pan-Islamist organisations. These locals even in "hot" places on this side of the International Border (IB) have also learnt to live under the shadown of the Pakistani gun. Again, it is usual: Talk of a Kargil-type conflict, sooner or later, in the strategic Jammu frontier. The talk doesnt seem to have triggered consternation, or commotion, anywhere in the region, although many people are not opposed to the idea of watching the situation as it develops with every passing day. The talk has, obviously, been the outcome of a set of ominous developments across the IB. One such development, EXCELSIOR was officially told, was the product of the unusual activity of Pakistans Mangla-based "hit" formation, known as 1 Strike Corps. A number of troops from the formation have been positioned across Kathua-Hiranagar-Samba-Ranbir Singh Pora belt in Jammu sector. These troops are in addition to the deployment of strong contingents of regulars and Rangers across the International Border. True, warlike situation doesnt prevail at present. But two other developments have already been allowed by Pakistan. First, armoured formations are available closer to the Zero Line. Second, Pakistan Army has evacuated villagers up to a depth of 7 km from the border across the Jammu sector. This can mean that the troops on the other side want to employ heavy artillery with a greater range. EXCELSIOR was also officially informed that if latest intelligence inputs were any guide, Pak troops plan is to increase the number of firing incidents along the border to target Indian posts and communication system as well as to prevent hundreds of migrants from returning to their villages located close to the border. |

Excelsior Correspondent DODA, Oct. 3: Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, star-hero of the J&K Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has predicted victory for his organisation at the hustings. He has even gone to the extent of making public yet another prediction: "PDP will get a decisive verdict to form new Government in this violence-plagued State". Addressing public meetings at Banihal, Magarkote and Kandhari of Banihal and Ramban Assembly constituencies, Mufti Sayeed reiterated that there was a "strong wave" against the National Conference (NC). The Muftis calculation: "People of J&K have decided to dethrone the Abdullah dynasty. People of this State have ultimately realized that the Abdullah dynasty is responsible all their woes. And removal of this autocratic rule is a must for bringing peace and tranquillity in the violence-plagued State". While highlighting the need to restore peace in Jammu and Kashmir for ensuring normalcy in the Indian subcontinent, the PDP chief and former Union Home Minister lambasted the National Conference, charging it with creating mess in the State. In his pointed reference to the much-talked-of "alienation" of the Kashmiri masses, the Mufti said that the Farooq Abdullah Governments "wrong policies" had increased the peoples "alienation". He also charged the Farooq establishment with inflicting "more injuries on the mind and hearts of the people, instead of mitigating their woes. Mufti Sayeed, who is Dr Farooq Abdullahs bete noire, did not fight shy as he propounded tit-for-tat exercise. His message, in this regard, was loud and clear: "This election is an opportunity to settle scores with those (an obvious reference to the Farooq Government) who have inflicted injuries on your hearts". The Muftis daughter, Ms Mehbooba Mufti, who is PDPs vice-chairperson, was equally harsh in her utterances against the National Conference and its Government. She appealed to the electorate of Doda district to vote against the "anti-people" National Conference party. |
Conduct of first 3 phases of pollsvery fair: EC SHIMLA, Oct 3: The Election Commission today termed as "very fair" the conduct of first three phases of Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. "The elections (in J and K) were very fair and no interference was allowed........There were hardly any complaints and people have demonstrated their confidence in the EC," Election Commissioner B B Tandon said today. He hoped that the last phase of polling in which six constituencies of terrorist-infested Doda district would go to polls, would also pass off peacefully. The EC, including the Chief Election Commissioner, had visited Jammu and Kashmir more than half a dozen times and also visited Doda area, Tandon said. The Commission was keeping its fingers crossed for the final phase of polling on October 8, he said, adding there had been sudden escalation in violence during the third phase. Tandon is here in connection with preperations for the coming Assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh. (PTI) |
Pak has increased intrusion bids: BSF SRINAGAR, Oct 3: After a brief lull, Pakistan has again increased attempts to push militants into Jammu and Kashmir and a spurt in infiltration bids has been witnessed over the past few months, belying Islamabads claims to the contrary, the Border Security Force (BSF) said here today. "There has been an increase in infiltration attempts, particularly since July this year," BSF Inspector General G S Gill told a group of reporters here. Substantiating his assertion, Gill said indication in this regard were the 41 encounters witnessed on the Line of Control (LoC) since July 19 in which 90 infiltrating militants had been gunned down. These attempts were aimed at sabotaging the ongoing Assembly elections, he said, adding the security forces had anticipated spurt in the infiltration after a brief lull. There was a phase when infiltration declined temporarily, he said, adding, "but since the May-end statement of Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf, we had been anticipating an increase as we believed that the enemy was reconsolidating". Expressing satisfaction over the conduct of three phases of elections, he, however, regretted the loss of lives of 12 BSF personnel in two militant attacks in south Kashmir within 24 hours after third phase of balloting ended on October one. "We were fearing Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attacks in south Kashmir and we had taken precautions. But the incident in Tral when five BSF men were killed was caused by a huge IED", he said. Pointing out that Tral area of Pulwama district was badly affected by militancy, Gill said the heights and topography suited militants designs. (PTI) |

Vajpayee disappointed over media coverage of ILC NEW DELHI, Oct 3: Expressing his disappointment over the media coverage of the recent Indian Labour Conference held here, Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee has reminded the journalists of their social responsibility towards informing the people on events of public interest. "Lekin Samachar Hi Gayab Ho Gai, Samachar Ki Upeksha Ho Gai,.... Is Par Vichar Hona Chahiye (but there must be pondering over the fact if the news is altogether not carried, or it is ignored)," Mr Vajpayee remarked reading out from a four-page address after launching the first issue of the "Shram Samachar" here yesterday. While the Prime Ministers observations on what he called "media distorting the facts on disinvestment" did find space in some newspapers today, his remarks on media coverage of the ILC was hardly reported in the print media. Mr Vajpayee asserted that the ILC, held on September 28-29, was a tripartite meeting of national significance. He regretted that only brief reports were carried by some newspapers. Even the differences on certain issues that emerged at the ILC was not properly highlighted, he added. "Kul Milake, Hamare Saath Nyay Nahin Hua" (by and large, justice had not been meted to us), the Prime Minister said adding that the moot point was how "Soochna" (information) could reach the working classes and through which medium. He said while it is equally important to keep the circulation of newspapers in mind, workers interests and the public point of view, whatever an event takes place, must get space in the media. Only then, the people would be able to decide on the issues with an open mind, he added. While lauding the Labour Ministrys initiative towards bringing out a publication to carry out information on labour reforms, labour laws, rights and duties of workers and employees to the industries and labour organisations, the Prime Minister reminded the department of the onerous task it had undertaken. "Aaajkal Akhbar Nikalana Kathin Kaam Ho Gaya Hai" (nowadays, it has bceome difficult to bring out a paper), Mr Vajpayee said. Strangely enough, while some new newspapers saw the light of the day, the old ones stopped publication, he added. "Lekin Zayadatar Akhbaar Ranga-Rang Ziada Hain. Samachar Panhuchanna Aur Samachar Achhe Dhang Se Pahunchayen Jayen, Pathniye Hon, Akarshak Hon, Isme Koi Apatti Nahin Hai (but most of the newspapers are colourful. There should be no objection if news is reported and that too in a good way, it should be worth reading and attractive)," the Prime Minister said. (UNI) |
Delhi Police arrest another suspect in Shivani murder case NEW DELHI, Oct 3: With the arrest of Ved Prakash alias Kalu, a mechanic-turned-criminal, the Delhi Police today claimed to have arrested all the suspects named in the Shivani Bhatnagar murder case in which former Haryana Inspector General of Police Ravikant Sharma is the alleged chief conspirator. Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Qamar Ahmed told reporters that Kalu, a resident of Gurgaon, was arrested by the Crime Branch from near the Haryana border this morning. He was arrested on NH-8 (Gurgaon Road) near Indira Gandhi International Airport around 1130 hrs. Mr Ahmed, however, refused to confirm the arrest of Ishwar Singh in the case. Singh is said to be a close associate of R K Sharma. According to sources in the Crime Branch, Ishwar Singh was detained during the early hours of the day. The place and reason for his arrest was not disclosed. Kalu is said to have driven the car in which Sri Bhagwan Sharma, Pradeep Sharma, Satya Prakash and Ved Sharma travelled to Shivanis house in Navkunj Apartment in East Delhi where she was found murdered on January 23, 1999. He alongwith Sri Bhagwan Sharma waited in the car outside the apartment while Pradeep, Satya Prakash and Ved Sharma went to Shivanis house and strangulated and stabbed her to death, according to police. Kalu is also said to be in possession of Shivans camera, which was found missing from the house after the murder. However, the police did not say whether the camera has been recovered. The suspect, during preliminary interrogation, is understood to have told the police that the wire used for Shivanis strangulation was carried by Pradeep from his house. Kalu was produced before Metropolitan Magistrate J P Narain in Kakardooma Courts who remanded him in police custody till October eight. Mr Ahmed said now that all the suspects were in police custody, they would be confronted with one another to check the veracity of their statements. Police said they would confront Ved Prakash with R K Sharma who is currently being interrogated by Crime Branch sleuths at Adarsh Nagar Police Station. The expiry of the police remand of Ved Prakash coincides with that of R K Sharma and another accused Ved Sharma, who was brought from Gurgaon Central Jail on transit remand on September 30 from the Gurgaon Jail where he was serving a seven-year jail term in a rape case. The Crime Branch nabbed Ved Prakash on the basis of clues provided by Ved Sharma. (UNI) |
