Farooq for global campaign against terrorism

Excelsior Correspondent

SRINAGAR, Oct 1: Terming growing violence the biggest threat to peace, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Farooq Abdullah has sought united and well-meaning global campaign against the monster of terror.

"A whole-hog strategy has to be adopted against perpetrators of terrorism who have held the world community to ransom," Dr Abdullah said in a message on the eve of Gandhi Jayanti, the birthday of the father of the nation.

Dr Abdullah said the agony of terrorism cannot be felt more by the world than the people of Jammu and Kashmir, who have been undergoing traumatic period of militancy unleashed from across the border for over a decade.

"The land where Mahatma Gandhi saw a ray of hope during the horrendous days of partition, has become haven for the merchants of death, patronized by the neighbouring country, who spill blood of innocents everyday," he said.

The best way to remember Mahatma Gandhi would be to work for peace and tranquility and strengthen the bonds of brotherhood in the country, Dr Abdullah said while expressing anguish over the attempts of wedge being created between different sections of society in the name of religion.

The Chief Minister hoped the compatriots would strive for building a harmonious society based on social justice, love and tranquility.

At Wanihama, voters stage demo summoning
local MLA during poll

ANANTNAG, Oct 1: Issues like unemployment, lack of development and absence of basic amenities prominently came to the fore during the polling in this Assembly constituency of South Kashmir today, with people agitating to air their grievances at several places.

The constituency also witnessed disparity in turnout as voters in rural areas outnumbered those in urban localities.

"We are without electricity for the last four months. The condition of roads laid four decades ago is miserable," said 60-year old Mohammad Ramzan while standing in a queue to cast his ballot at Wanihama village.

Extremely critical of the National Conference, Ramzan said neither the party nor its local MLA did anything for this area. "The MLA never turned up so that we could apprise him of our grievances."

Abdul Ahad Shah said the village had hundreds of educated youth who were doing menial jobs because of unemployment. "Whom should we tell? there is nobody to listen."

Ramzan and Shah were among hundreds of people who later gathered outside a polling station and staged a demonstration for a peculiar reason — summoning of the MLA so that he is forced to listen to them.

"We are not for boycott of polls as this is our right and gives us a chance to choose our candidate. But we have lost faith in this process as our elected representatives never care to look back again after reaching the Assembly," said Ghulam Ahmed Bhat.

Similar stories were narrated in Bun Dayalgham village where men and women were raising slogans. Slogans were also raised outside a polling station for "independence".

Fazzi Begum said hundreds of youth of the village were graduates and post-graduates but without any jobs. "Will they not turn to militancy if the situation persists? but who cares."

"We are willing to vote but there is a feeling that it does not help," added Firdous Ahmed.

While enthusiasm towards the democratic exercise was visible in rural areas, people were found to be indifferent in urban areas.

Several polling stations wore a deserted look particularly in Anantnag town area.

A meagre seven out of 783 votes had been cast at a polling station in Anantnag’s Lal Chowk area even six hours after the voting began at 7 am. (PTI)

A miracle that saved sibling from death

From Dinesh Manhotra

HIRANAGAR MORH (KATHUA), Oct 1: Though it was providential escape for 10 year old Renu, but she is still shell shocked as, with her naked eyes, this young girl has seen macabre act of terrorists. Her repeated attempt to narrate that gruesome incident proved futile as she could not gain strength to come out of the fear-psychosis.

Similar is the condition of her younger brother Balraj, a third standard student, who is the youngest eye-witness of that carnage in which terrorists have gunned down 11 innocent civilians.

Renu and her 7 year old younger brother were waiting for bus at Hiranagar Morh when terrorists, who were boarding in mini-bus, came down at once and resorted to indiscriminate firing and lobbed some grenades on those who were standing in the Chowk. Although all educational institutions were closed in the entire Kathua district due to the polling but Renu and Balraj are students of Army School, Samba (Maheshwar) so they had to board a bus from Hiranagar Morh to reach the school. Renu and Balraj regularly take bus from Hiranagar Morh. As their home is just near the Morh so both children mostly come of their own.

Recurring that nightmarish incident, Renu, with fear lurking on her innocent face, said, "we were standing near an auto when terrorists came down from mini-bus and resorted to spraying bullets".

One Uncle who was sitting under the Peppal tree shouted and asked us to run away, she said, adding, "one of the terrorist who was firing continuously, turned towards us and fired some bullets on us".

Fortunately both brother and sister escaped but an auto-driver Sonu fell victim of terrorists’ bullet. Renu and Balraj were standing near that auto-driver but bullets fired by terrorists missed them. It was really a miraculous escape but the auto-driver Sonu was not lucky enough. "Within no time, I dragged Balraj and both of us took shelter behind an auto", the fear-stricken Renu recounted, adding, "behind that auto I saw how that auto driver was crying with pain and after some time he succumbed to his injuries".

After killing auto-driver, terrorist turned towards other side which provided adequate time for both brother and sister to run away from the spot. Availing the opportunity Renu and her brother took shelter in a near by house. For more than two hours, both of them remained in that house.

Young Renu recounted that all the terrorists were wearing Khaki uniform and looking like cops. "All the terrorists were of the age group between 20 to 25 and very clean shaved. They had bags on their shoulders", she said.

Young Balraj, a third standard student who witnessed naked dance of death, started weeping when he was asked to narrate what he had seen. He is shell shocked.

Rajesh Kumar, a shop-keeper of Hiranagar Morh, who too had a narrow escape during terrorists attack, gave all credit to the bus-driver for protecting lives of those who were boarding in the bus. Bus driver displayed extra-ordinary courage and took the bus away from the spot towards down amidst grenades and bullets.

Recalling that incident, Babu Ram, another shopkeeper said that all happened within no time. "I was going through the pages of a news-paper when I heard sound of a blast", he said, adding, "As I stood up, I saw three youth firing aimlessly in the Chowk and lobbing grenades." Babu Ram along Ram Paul ran away from the spot but not before some splinters hit them resulting into minor injuries to both of them.

Fear gripped entire locality after terrorists’ attack and majority of the people confined themselves to the houses resulting into low turn out in the adjoining polling stations. Even heavy deployment of forces in the area to flush out terrorists could not inculcate a sense of confidence among inhabitants.

About 35 pc turnout in Pahalgam

PAHALGAM, Oct 1: Despite threats from militants, this constituency of South Kashmir witnessed about 35 per cent turnout in the third phase of polling for Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections with rural electorate outnumbering their urban counterparts.

Enthusiastic voters, including women and the elderly, queued up outside several polling booths since early morning to exercise their franchise in this world-famous tourist resort.

At some booths voters came in singles or groups to decide the political fate of seven contestants, including People’s Democratic Party’s Chief Ministerial candidate Mehbooba Mufti.

"There is no fear of militants here. Neither are the security forces saying anything to us. We have willingly come out to vote for our candidate, said Mohammad Ghani at Laripora village as others echoed his sentiments.

Shafi Mohammad said he had woken up early to reach the polling station to get an early chance to cast his ballot. In one area, people got agitated when a polling station was shifted to another location after three hours of balloting.

While the authorities defended the move, saying the booth had been wrongly set up, agitated voters alleged that it was shifted two kilometers away at the behest of the ruling National Conference to deprive supporters of Mehbooba Mufti from casting their votes.

While some threatened to boycott polling, a large number of people walked down to the relocated booth saying "if we do not cast our votes, the NC will indulge in manipulations, which we will not allow", said Riaz Ahmed.

Interestingly, a 110-year-old woman Khurshi also was determined not to lose her chance to vote and walked to the new polling station.

In Akad village, a group of people demonstrated outside a polling booth alleging that a local policeman had hit a voter while directing him to remain in the queue. However, the matter was resolved immediately. (PTI)

Excelsior Correspondent

RAMBAN, Oct 1: Holding both Congress and National Conference (NC) responsible for the present turmoil in Jammu and Kashmir State, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Ramban Constituency and Party candidate, Mr Bali Bhagat said these parties are the two faces of the same coin.

A spokesman of the government said here this evening that Pakistan and her sponsored militants, who were jittery over the peaceful and successful conduct of first two phases of assembly polls in the State with large participation, today made a determined effort to scare the voters. Nearly 30 incidents of militant violence took place in the third phase, which claimed lives of 16 persons besides injuries to several others. Not only the militant violence, they even sponsored demonstrations at some places to influence the media persons claiming to dissociate from the elections and discouraging the large number of willing voters. Allegations of coercion were also made to discredit the electoral process as part of their plan.

After having failed to derail the electoral process, the militants even targeted the returning poll parties with the electronic voting machines during which seven security personnel were killed in the Valley this evening.

Despite all this, a substantial number of voters i.e. 28 per cent in Pulwama and 25 per cent in Anantnag districts came out to exercise their right of franchise.

This entire exercise has been observed by a large number of foreign diplomats, which is reasonably good in the given situation.
