CENTURION (South Africa), Nov 19: South Africa scrambled to a tense three-wicket win over Sri Lanka on the fifth day of the second and final test at Centurion Park today. South Africa, set to make 121 to win, crashed to 44 for five before Neil McKenzie played a crucial innings of 39 to take his side to within nine runs of victory. South Africa won the series 2-0. They won the first test in Johannesburg by an innings and 64 runs. It was South Africas sixth win in seven tests against Sri Lanka in South Africa. On a dramatic day, 14 wickets fell for 189 runs. Sri Lankan fast bowler Dilhara Fernando took four wickets in a devastating opening spell. McKenzie and Andrew Hall put on 29 for the sixth wicket before wicketkeeper and vice-captain Mark Boucher helped McKenzie add 39 for the seventh wicket. As the tension mounted, Sri Lankan fast bowler Chamila Gamage received an official warning from umpire Daryl Harper for walking into McKenzie between overs. Sri Lanka lost seven wickets for 65 runs today, collapsing from an overnight 180 for three to be dismissed for 245. Makhaya Ntini and Jacques Kallis both took four wickets. South Africa took two wickets in the first ten balls of the day to expose the Sri Lankan tail, exactly as South African captain Shaun Pollock had said would be the objective when he spoke to the media yesterday evening. Ntini struck with the first ball of the day when Mahela Jayawardene was given out leg before for 40 by umpire Russell Tiffin, although the batsman appeared to be outside the line of the stumps when the ball hit his pad. Pollock completed a dismal series for Russel Arnold in the next over when Arnold was trapped on his crease and was another leg before victim. Arnold made six runs in four innings during the series. Ntini took his fourth wicket of the innings and his eighth of the match when Hasantha Fernando hooked him to deep backward square leg. Ntini finished with four for 52. Kallis took two wickets off successive balls in his first over of the day. He had first innings century-maker Hashan Tillakaratne caught behind off an inside edge after making six runs in 79 minutes, then had Chamila Gamage caught at first slip. Chaminda Vaas and Dilhara Fernando added 36 for the ninth wicket to give the tourists a glimmer of hope. South Africa lost Graeme Smith leg before to Vaas off the first ball of the innings before Fernando sent the home team crashing to 44 for five by dismissing Herschelle Gibbs, Gary Kirsten, Kallis and Ashwell Prince. Andrew Hall, promoted from number nine, batted aggressively and scored 16 before he was caught at short leg off Muttiah Muralitharan. South Africa still needed 48 to win when Boucher joined McKenzie but both batsmen played positively to take their side towards victory. Mckenzie was bowled when he went back to a ball from Muralitharan which skidded through. He scored 39 off 53 balls with four fours. (AFP) |
Pakistan win Zimbabwe cricket test series 2-0 BULAWAYO (Zimbabwe), Nov 19: Pakistan won the test series against Zimbabwe 2-0 today, both matches being wrapped up in four days. They won the first test in Harare by 119 and the second at the Queens Sports Club here by 10 wickets. Pakistan was superior in every department. However, it was Zimbabwes failings rather than Pakistans attributes that resulted in victories by such wide margins. The home teams batting was brittle and they relied heavily on their three senior players: Alistair Campbell and the Flower brothers, Grant and Andy. Zimbabwe were never in the match after scoring only 178 in their first innings. Were it not for Yousuf Youhanas 159 in Pakistans reply, the tourists would not have built up a 225 runs lead by scoring 403. The home teams objective from that point could only be to deprive Pakistan the pleasure of winning by an innings. By the close of the third day yesterday, they were 171-5 and still needing 54 more runs to make Pakistan bat again. They lost Andy Flower, not out 13 overnight, with the fourth ball of the day. But rather than signal a collapse by Zimbabwes tail, it heralded stubborn resistance. Diminutive wicketkeeper Tatenda Taibu dug deep for his 37 not out at the end. Andy blignaut hit 41 in 32 balls, including two sixes off Waqar Younis. Mluleki Nkala and Ray Price managed 14 and 12 respectively. Pakistan were left to get 57 to win, a token amount that they knocked off within an hour, Taufeeq Umar making 21 not out and Shaheed Elahi 30, with six extras added. The main features of the match were Youhanas 10th century in test cricket and Saqlain Mushtaqs 7 for 66 on the first day, a rarity for a spinner. The tour now goes into its one-day international phase. There will be two matches in Bulawayo this weekend followed by three in Harare next week. (AP) |

The committee will go into the crowd behaviour in various cricket centres all over the the cricket playing countries and will give its recommendations. Mr Speed said based on the Players Saftey Committee report, the ICC would decide its future course of action which would include imposing penalties and banning of the unruly venues. He said ICC has taken the unruly behaviour of the crowd in various countries very seriously. we are concerned about players saftey and will not hesitate in taking drastic steps to prevent such situations, he added. "Some water has to flow under the bridge," he said adding that ICC will intervene only in the last minute. Mr Speed said ICC expects to earn 5,50 million dollars as sponsorship money from the World Cup. He admitted that India is a huge market for cricket. "That is why we are here.
