West Indies take 3-2 lead with 5-wicket win

VADODARA, Nov 18: India were pushed into a corner in the seven match series as a Chris Gayle-powered West Indies took a crucial 3-2 lead with a comfortable five wicket victory in the fifth one-day international here today.

Gayle hit his third century of the series as West Indies bettered India’s score of 290 for eight with seven balls to spare, continuing the trend of teams batting second successfully chasing big totals.

However, it was Gayle’s opening partner Wavell Hinds who laid the foundation for the successful run chase by West Indies, hitting a blistering 80 off just 61 balls including ten fours and five sixes.

Gayle, who had played a similar blazing knock in the previous match at Ahmedabad, was completely overshadowed by his partner, later declared man of the match, before taking on the baton to lead West Indies to a fluent win in a match reduced to 48 overs a side due to a delayed start caused by overnight dew.

Gayle made 101 off 107 balls with ten fours and three sixes before being declared caught behind in a debatable decision.

India will now have to win the next two matches in Jodhpur and Vijayawada to clinch the one-day series.

Earlier, the home team rode on fine half-centuries by V V S Laxman, skipper Sourav Ganguly and Virender Sehwag to post a competitive total. Laxman top-scored with 71 while Sehwag struck a characteristic 52 off just 39 balls. Ganguly chipped in with 52 runs.

The chinks in the Indian bowling were exposed yet again as Gayle and Hinds shred the home team attack into pieces.

Lakshmipathy Balaji had a nightmarish start to his international career, being hit for 44 runs from four overs while Javagal Srinath was taken for 42 runs from six overs on a pitch that was offereing some help to the spinners.

India used as many as nine bowlers but only left-arm spinner Murali Kartik and off-spinner Harbhajan Singh were effective. Kartik claimed his first one-day wicket when he dismissed Ramnaresh Sarwan and finished with impressive figures of 1-38 from his ten overs. Harbhajan Singh took two for 53.

Gayle, who had hit centuries in Nagpur and Ahmedabad too, and Hinds flayed the Indian attack in the first 14 overs, taking the score to 126 without loss when the fielding restrictions were removed.

Hinds indulged in the big hitting, raising his ninth one-day fifty off just 32 balls with nine fours and two huge sixes. He was particularly severe on the spinners as he repeatedly came out to loft them over the ground.

It was Sehwag who finally got rid of Hinds when the batsman miscued a sweep shot and top-edged an easy catch to Ganguly. The first wicket partnership produced 132 runs in 17 overs.

Just three runs were added to the West Indian total when Harbhajan Singh foxed Marlon Samuels with an away-going delivery that the batsman failed to read and edged for Ganguly to take a spectacular diving catch in the slips.

The fall of two quick wickets saw India pull themselves back into the game but Gayle and Sarwan fought back with a 83-run stand for the third wicket.

This was the most quiet phase of the West Indian innings as the Indian spinners, especially Kartik, bowled really well. But the two batsmen kept knocking off singles and twos even as boundaries eluded the West Indians for nearly 16 overs.

Kartik dismissed Sarwan with a beautiful delivery that spun away from the batsman and took an outside edge which kissed wicketkeeper Rahul Dravid’s gloves on way to Ganguly at first slip. Sarwan made 34 off 55 balls.

West Indies lost two wickets at the same score of 239 when Shivnarine Chanderpaul was run out cheaply for four and Gayle fell immediately after reaching his century.

But Ricardo Powell and Carl Hooper denied any comeback chance to the Indians and saw their team home in the 47th over. Powell remained unbeaten on 30 from 26 balls while Hooper was not out on run-a-ball 21.

Earlier, the Indians faltered a bit in the final overs after getting a promising start from Ganguly and Sehwag.

The two openers put on 88 runs in just 11 overs with Sehwag blasting nine fours and a six as he once again outscored his captain.

Collins took heavy punishment from Sehwag who hit the bowler for five of his nine boundaries. Collins gave away 15 runs in his second over and eight in his next before being taken off with first spell figures of 3-0-26-0.

Sehwag reached his half-century off just 37 balls before Collymore struck for West Indies in the 11th over. Sehwag gave a catch to Shivnarine Chanderpaul at mid-on, bringing to an end a sparkling knock.

Ganguly, who was left way behind, and Laxman were associated in 46-run second wicket stand before India lost their second wicket at 134. Ganguly was bowled by Hooper for a 55-ball 53 which contained eight hits to the fence.

India had been scoring well above six runs an over in the first 20 overs and Laxman and Dravid ensured that the run rate was maintained even though the boundaries were less frequent.

Laxman and Dravid, who had shared a 103-run partnership in Ahmedabad, scored mostly through singles and twos and took the score to 212 in the 36th over before a slight slump started.

Dravid was caught in the deep by a diving Chris Gayle when he mistimed a pull shot against part-time off-spinner marlon samuels. Dravid’s 33 came off 36 balls and included three fours.

Laxman, who in the meanwhile had reached his ninth one-day fifty, started taking risks and repeatedly came down the track to chip the ball over the in-fielders.

Just when it was time to launch the final offensive, India lost a couple of important wickets which helped the West Indian bowlers to prevent the big hits.

Mohammad Kaif chipped a simple catch to Ramnaresh Sarwan at deep mid-wicket and Laxman soon followed him in the pavilion when he lobbed the ball straight into the hands of Hooper at mid-off. Both the wickets were claimed by Collins. (PTI)

Ganguly to miss last two matches

VADODARA, Nov 18: In a further jolt to an already depleted Indian team, skipper Sourav Ganguly was today rested for the last two one-dayers against West Indies even as the hosts trail the seven-match series 2-3.

With star batsman Sachin Tendulkar and left-arm seamer Zaheer Khan missing the series due to injuries, Ganguly’s absence comes as a severe blow to India’s chances of winning the series.

Cricket board secretary S K Nair, who announced a changed 15-member squad for the two matches in Jodhpur and Vijayawada, said Ganguly was forced to take rest because of a back problem.

Vice-captain Rahul Dravid will lead the side in the absence of Ganguly, Nair said.

Off-spinner Sarandeep Singh and all-rounder Reetinder Singh Sodhi found their way back into the national squad after a long time while Ajit Agarkar, who was dropped after the first three matches, was also recalled to the side.

The selectors, who met here today after the fifth one-day international, however, ignored leg-spinner Anil Kumble who too was dropped along with Agarkar.

All-rounder J P Yadav and Tamil Nadu paceman Lakshmipathy Balaji, both of whom failed to impress in the matches they played, were the two dropped from the side.

The squad: Rahul Dravid (capt), Virendra Sehwag, Dinesh Mongia, V V S Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Mohammad Kaif, Harbhajan Singh, Reetinder Singh Sodhi, Javagal Srinath, Ashish Nehra, Ajit Agarkar, Murali Kartik, Sanjay Bangar, Sarandeep Singh, Parthiv Patel.

Nair said the team for the upcoming tour of New Zealand will be announced on November 25 either at Vijayawada or in Mumbai.

After a brief break following the current series, the Indian team will leave for a 41-day tour of New Zealand on December 1. The Indians are scheduled to play two tests and seven one-day internationals against the Kiwis. (PTI)

Windies start learning from mistakes

By Michael Holding

It has taken five games and hence almost five hundred overs but I think one has to start having a bit of sympathy for the bowlers in this tournament. The pitch for this game here in Baroda looked like and most people thought, it would have a bit more in it for the bowlers. The spinners in particular seemed sure to come into their own, especially in the second innings but in the end it was the same old story, bat second and win.

India must have thought they were about to change the story line when they asked the West Indies to get 291 runs in the 48 overs allotted and even Hooper the West Indies captain in his post match interview suggested that he thought 265 or 270 runs were about par for the pitch. It turned out to be well below par as in the end Hooper himself and Ricardo Powell virtually cruised to the total with seven balls to spare.

The West Indies owe this comfortable victory to the sparkling opening partnership between Wavell Hinds and Chris Gayle. We have already seen how powerful these two young men are but on this occasion they were awesome. Both tore into the attack with Chris Gayle almost looking as if he wasn’t trying. He was scoring at well over a run a ball but compared to Wavell Hinds at the other end scoring at a strike rate of 150 runs per 100 balls, his was snails pace.

Gaining experience is a commonly used phrase by journalists and commentators on both radio and television but unfortunately there is sometimes the ill-conceived idea that playing lots of games means one is gaining experience. You can only gain experience if you are learning as you go along, both by your own mistakes and also by mistakes made by others that you have observed. This West Indies team has been criticized in the past as not a learning group of cricketers, myself included, but there are definitely signs of a bit of grey matter being employed in their game these days. It could not be said to be perfectly being employed yet but it was good to see the approach of the batsmen again chasing this target. Wavell Hinds blazed away for 80 runs off just 61 deliveries but on his departure in the 17th over there was still a lot of work to be done to win this game. His opening partner saw to it that the West Indies went back in front in this 7 game series by great application and showing a great sense of purpose. The introduction of the spinners on this more helpful surface meant hard work and graft for quite a few overs but at the same time looking for every opportunity to score as it was imperative that the required rate didn’t start climbing out of proportion. Chris Gayle did this to perfection and although Wavell Hinds obviously impressed match referee Mike Proctor with his power hitting at the top of the innings, my Man of the Match would have to be Gayle.

With the batsmen again stealing the show in this 6th One Dayer, spare a thought though for Murali Kartik. He bowled beautifully and for the second game in a row, something that no other bowler can lay claim to in this series so far, he certainly should be doing this job for India for some time to come and perhaps not just in the One Day games. Haryana need 30 runs to beat J&K in Ranji

Excelsior Sports Correspondent

JAMMU, Nov 18: Guests Haryana were in need of just 30 runs, with two days play remaining to beat J&K on their home turf in the Ranji Trophy league tie being played at MA Stadium, here.

On the second day of the four-day match, which witnessed the fall of 18 wickets, Haryana were playing confidently on 52 for three in 20 overs to chase a target of 82 runs to win.

Earlier, during the day, Haryana after taking 47 runs first innings lead, bowled out the hosts for 128 runs to make their victory easy. Needing 82 runs to win, Haryana were well placed when the days’ play was abandoned and had required just 30 more runs to win with seven wickets and two days play remaining.

Even as, skipper Vijay Sharma clinched first three wickets and built-up pressure on the Haryana batsmen, yet he failed to break the healthy and growing partnership between Ajay Ratra and Shafiq Khan. Ajay was batting on 21 (off 35 balls, 2x4) and Shafiq was playing at the other end on five.

After facing a trail of 47 runs in the first innings, J&K players again failed to improve their batting in the second innings and were bowled out for 128 runs in 41.3 overs giving guests a clean path to victory.

This time only Kanvaljeet Singh could dare the Haryana bowlers and played some good shots to the fence. His 51 runs knock coming off 89 delivers included seven boundaries. Dhruv Mahajan was second highest scorer with 17 runs in his account.

Amit Mishra and Gaurav Vishisht caused J&K’s early dismissal sharing the last seven wickets. Amit claimed four, while Gaurav took away three wickets for 24 runs in ten overs he bowled.

Earlier, Haryana could add 66 more runs to their overnight score of 102 runs to take 47 runs lead bringing the total to 168 in 51.6 overs. It was due to the 51 runs fifth wicket partnership between Shafiq and Khan and Amit Mishra that Haryana could take lead over hosts because after their dismissal, the remaining three wickets were lost adding just one run to the total.

Before being bowled out, Shafiq Khan, who was playing at 26 yesterday, completed his half century (51, 4x4). Other man at the crease, Amit Mishra contributed 18 runs. Both these batsmen were bowled by Jagtar Singh making it 13-4-30-3. Another slow bower, Ashwani Gupta, who had clinched two wickets yesterday, added two more to his account (14.5-2-32-4).
