Shoaib found guilty of ball tampering

HARARE, Nov 13: Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has been found guilty of ball tampering in the first test against Zimbabwe, match referee Clive Lloyd said today.

Lloyd confirmed the umpires had reported the matter to him and there was agreement that Shoaib had changed the condition of the ball illegally during the match which ended with Pakistan’s 119-run victory yesterday with a day to spare.

"The umpires and I inspected the ball and it was clear to us that it had been scratched," Lloyd told Reuters.

Lloyd replied in the affirmative when asked whether the guilty player was Shoaib, adding "we have severely reprimanded him". He said no further action would be taken.

The Pakistani team management was not immediately available for comment.

Umpires Srinivas Venkataraghavan and Dave Orchard had two discussions with Pakistan captain Waqar Younis and Shoaib before and after lunch yesterday over the condition of the ball.

Shoaib left the field immediately after the second discussion, which followed his 14th over. He returned to bowl the penultimate over before tea.

The Pakistani express bowler finished with a match analysis of seven for 118. (AGENCIES)

ICC to take drastic measures against unruly venues

LONDON, Nov 13: The venues which witnessed crowd trouble during the first three one-dayers between India and West Indies could be banned from staging any more international matches if the safety and security committee of the ICC, which is meeting shortly, takes a decision to this effect.

"We have asked this committee to consider appropriate penalties for venues which consistently fail to meet their obligations in meeting minimum standards of security.

"This is likely to include the ultimate sanction of withdrawing international status from a ground, combined with a heavy financial penalty," International Cricket Council Chief Executive Malcolm Speed said in a statement last night.

The ICC’s attempt to expand its powers to remove international status from venues was prompted by the crowd-trouble during the third one-day international between India and West Indies at Rajkot yesterday.

Chasing a victory target of 301 in 50 overs, India were 200 for one in the 28th over when a section of the crowd threw objects at the West Indies players forcing the match referee Mike Procter to abandon the match and declare the hosts winner under the Duckworth-Lewis system.

The first two one-day internationals at Jamshedpur and Nagpur respectively were also affected by crowd trouble but play was able to continue. Though at present the ICC does not have any authority to remove the international status of a venue, Speed said that the option will be considered by the imminent meeting of the safety and security committee.

Speed also said that the ICC is seeking urgent confirmation from the Indian Cricket Board concerning the adequacy of safety and security measures in place for the remaining four matches of the India-West Indies one-day series.

He said that following three consucutive games marred by crowd unrest and disturbances, the ICC was seeking reassurances about the safety of both sets of players and officials for the remainder of the series.

"The ICC has been in contact with the BCCI after the disturbances in Jamshedpur and Nagpur and now in the process of seeking a full explanation of the unacceptable events in Rajkot.

"In addition, we have asked for details of the ground stewarding and security plans for the next four matches. We will also request that BCCI officials meet with ICC match referee mike procter to discuss the matter and brief them fully of plans and contingency measures."

All ICC members subscribe to the principle that the safety and security of players and officials is paramount and that it is their responsibility to ensure that appropriate measures are in place for all international matches and series, the ICC release said.

Meanwhile, BCCI president Jagmohan has expressed concern about the safety of players of both teams and said the board "cannot certainly remain a silent spectator to such behaviour in cricket matches." Dalmiya said in a statement in Kolkata that the BCCI spoke to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and requested him to take stringent measures to prevent recurrence of trouble during the next two matches in the state on November 15 (Ahmedabad) and November 18 (Baroda). BCCI moots steps to prevent crowd trouble

KOLKATA, Nov 13: The BCCI, condemning crowd behaviour during the ODI between India and West Indies at Rajkot yesterday, has proposed a three-pronged measure to the Gujarat Government to prevent similar recurrences in the remaining matches at Ahmedabad and Vadodara.

Board of Cricket for India president Jagomohan Dalmia got in touch with Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and requested him that every spectator be properly searched by the police before they entered the stadium so that no one is allowed to carry objects like plastic bottles and firecrackers that could be used as potential missiles.

He further requested that in case any spectator indulged in any activity that could lead to any untoward incident, the person should be immediately taken into police custody and finally, if any case an untoward incident is more than an isolated one, the particular stand should be vacated by the police with the help of the ground authority.

"We do appreciate that law and order are subject matters of the local police and they are the best judge to handle the situation, but BCCI cannot be a silent spectator to such unruly behaviour in cricket matches," Mr Dalmiya said.

"We are happy that the Gujarat Government has kindly agreed to the suggestion and issued necessary instruction to the concerned authorities," Mr Dalmiya added.

"We have also issued necessary instruction to the concerned staging association to install close circuit television sets and adequate cameras at strategic points at the stadia so that trouble mongers can be identified," Mr Dalmiya said.

While India take on West Indies at Ahmedabad on Friday, they play the next match at Vadodara on Monday. The BCCI would also make similar request to the Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh Governments for the matches in Jodhpur and Vijaywada on November 21 and 24 respectively.

He also requested all the cricket associations to work in close association with the police and is believed to have got in touch with his counterpart in West Indies Cricket Board wesley hall to apprise him of the steps taken. (UNI)

RANJI TROPHY
J&K vs Bihar match called off, no team to get any point

JAMSHEDPUR, Nov 12: The fourth and final day’s play of the Ranji Trophy match between Jammu and Kashmir and host Bihar was called off without a ball being bowled today at the Keenan Stadium due to inclement weather prevailing since last evening.

The steel city had light drizzles at frequent intervals since last evening and the umpires - R Radhakrishnan and K Srinivasan - of Tamil Nadu therefore called off the match after the scheduled tea break.

As the first innings could not be completed during the last four days of the match, no team would get any point as per the new Ranji Trophy rules, officials said.

Rain washes out last day’s Assam-Orissa play

GUWAHATI: Unseasonal torrents have washed out the last day’s play between Assam and Orissa in the Ranji Trophy match giving the hosts a vital first innings lead and a crucial point.

Not a single ball could be bowled today as slow drizzle since last night made the ground slippery and unplayable completely.

Assam had taken a vital 17-run lead and garnered one crucial point, as per the new point system introduced this season. When the stumps were drawn for the third day yesterday, Assam were 364 for seven in reply to Orissa’s first innings total of 346 all out.

Thanks to two mumbaikars Manoj Jogelkar (103) and Kiran Powar (111), imported by Coach Lalchand Rajput from Mumbai, Assam put up a spirited fightback after bowling out Orissa for 347.

However, once they departed Assam lost six quick wickets and then struggled hard to take the first innings lead.

After last year’s humiliation, Assam did restore some pride with this match by getting the single point. As per the new system, first innings lead is one point, outright victory is 2 points and innings defeat is three points.

Mumbai defeat Hyderabad by 69 runs, Log 2 points

HYDERABAD: Mumbai scored a resounding 69-run victory against hosts Hyderabad and logged two points for the outright victory on the final day of the four-day Ranji trophy cricket match at Gymkhana grounds here today. Chasing a victory target of 306, the hosts were bundled out for 236 in 98.5 overs, few minutes after tea. Hyderabad, resuming at 110 for 5, saw Anirudh Singh and Shivaji Yadav put up a brave fight and take the score beyond the 200-run mark.

The duo added 42 runs for the sixth wicket but Mumbai spinners Rajesh Pawar and Sairaj Bahutule called the shots

and troubled the batsmen frequently with their flight.

Rajesh Pawar dismissed Anirudh Singh for a well made 60 inclusive of eight hits to the fence while Shivaji was unbeaten with a skilfully scripted 78, with nine boundaries. Debutant wicket-keeper Iibrahim Kaleel played a patient innings and tried to block one end by facing 62 balls in a space of 79 minutes to score 17 but was well taken by Wassim Jaffer in slips to give Avishkar Salvi his third wicket.

Earlier the hosts, after bundling out Mumbai for paltry 98 in the first innings, could not convert the advantage into a formidable innings as they folded up at 130.

Starting with a deficit of 32 runs, Mumbai started the second essay with style and piled up 337 before packing the five top order Hyderabad batsmen to pavilion for 110.

Mumbai bowlers ensured a victory as the team opened their account in the Ranji season with full two points. (PTI)

Agassi, Safin lose at Masters Cup

SHANGHAI, Nov 13: A massive collapse tonight by Andre Agassi handed a devastating blow to his bid to finish the year ranked No. 1 when he was upset 7-5 6-1 by Jiri Novak in the Tennis Masters Cup.

Agassi had been in complete control, sailing along with a 5-2 lead and serving for the first set. He won only one more game - that to begin the second set - as Novak won 11 of the final 12 games to pull off the huge shocker.

With Agassi’s opening loss, Australian Lleyton Hewitt needed only to win tonight’s final match against Spain’s Carlos Moya to build an insurmountable lead in the championship points race and finish on top for the second consecutive year.

French open champion Albert Costa handed Marat Safin his second straight loss here, knocking off the Russian 3-6 6-4 6-3 in today’s first match.

The win evened Costa’s record at 1-1 in the round-robin portion of the eight-player tournament, while Safin, considered one of the three favorites to win the US$3.75 million event, tumbled to 0-2.

Safin, ranked third in the world, could wind up the round-robin portion of the event without winning a match. His next opponent is top-seeded Hewitt.

Both Hewitt and Moya won their first matches yesterday.

Costa gained a spot in this elite field by winning the French Open. The top seven players in the world gain automatic entry, with the eighth spot going to a player who wins a grand slam tournament but doesn’t otherwise qualify in the championship points race. (AP)

Australian Open aims to turn down heat on players

MELBOURNE, Nov 13: Matches won’t start if heat and humidity become overly excessive at next January’s Australian open under a more stringent hot weather policy announced today for the first grand slam of next season.

"In 2003, the commencement of further matches outdoors will be suspended if the air temperature reaches 35 degrees celsius but only if in conjunction with a Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) of 28 or above," a statement read.

Tournament officials said that both criteria must occur simultaneously, with further play scheduled as conditions eased.

The Australian Open is the only one of the four grand slams with two moveable roofs, one of each of the two main showcourts. They have proven useful in the past when Melbourne’s summer heat gets too intense for safe play.

The WBGT was described as a combination of ambient air temperature, humidity, intensity of solar radiation and wind speed which together affect the ability of an individual of an individual to lose heat whether exercising or sitting still.

Besides players, tournament mcmamee said that ball boys and girls plus chair umpires and linesman must also be protected from the searing elements.

The city has been hit by the first heatwave of the season in recent days as spring turns into the southern summer with plus-30 degree temperatures and water restrictions.

But with weather conditions which can range from a chilly 15 to a desert-like 40 celsius during the January 13-26 tournament, anything is possible.

This year’s women’s final was held on a hot day, with 35-degree temperatures almost bringing Martina Hingis to her knees as she lost a 6-4, 4-0 lead against Jennifer Capriati, the eventual champion.

Both players resorted to drastic measures, with Hingis lying on her back during changeovers at the side of the court and wearing an ice-filled jacket during pauses.

Under the events revised extreme heat policy, matches underway when the threshold level is reached would be completed but no new ones begun.

The former criteria were a 38-degree limit in 2002 and the 40-degree limit when the policy was introduced in 1998. (DPA)
