RAJKOT, Nov 12: India were declared winners of the third one-day international against the West Indies in the most unfortunate of circumstances, with crowd trouble resulting in the abandonment of the match midway through the second innings. India were cruising at 200 for one in the 28th over while chasing West Indies score of 300 for five when the match had to be called off after a couple of West Indian players were hit by bottles thrown from a section of the crowd. Since more than 25 overs had been bowled in the Indian innings, the Duckworth-Lewis system was used to calculate the difference between the scores of the two teams and the hosts were declared winners by 81 runs. The result gave India their first victory in the seven match series after losses at Jamshedpur and Nagpur. Crowd violence had marred the first two matches in Jamshedpur and Nagpur too and the disturbing trend continued at this venue despite heavy security arrangements in and around the stadium. The match came very near to being abandoned in Jamshedpur before better sense prevailed among the spectators and the game was allowed to be resumed. Today, substitute Ryan Hinds was hit by a bottle while fielding at long-off. The West Indians complained to match-referee Mike Procter of South Africa who said he would call the players off the ground if the incident was repeated. Some overs later, Vasbert Drakes, who dismissed Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly for 72, was hit by a bottle when he went to the boundary line to fetch the ball. The West Indians again approached procter who decided to call the players off. Police vacated the entire stand from where the bottles were thrown but apparently West Indies refused to take the ground untill the entire stadium was emptied. Apart from bringing a bad name to the venue and the country, the disgraceful incidents also overshadowed a blazing century by Virender Sehwag who remained unbeaten on 114. Sehwag and Ganguly put on 196 runs for the opening wicket which put India firmly on course of a victory. The two Indians scored at nearly eight an over, blasting every single West Indian bowler on show. Ganguly started the onslaught but Sehwag soon overtook his captain and entertained the crowd with his big hitting. India raced to 68 without loss in ten overs before adding 52 runs from the next five overs. The West Indians introduced spin in the form of Chris Gayle in the 13th over and Sehwag smashed him for three fours and a six to take 18 runs off it. Sehwag completed his half-century off just 33 balls with seven fours and a six. India, who reached 100 in the 14th over, were 120 without loss when fielding restrictions came to an end but there was no respite for the West Indian bowlers. Ganguly, who was outscored by his partner, also went for the big hits, repeatedly coming down the track to hit the bowlers all around the ground. Sehwag, in the meanwhile, reached his century off just 75 balls when he took a single against Mahendra Nagamootoo. The skipper was finally caught by Shivnarine Chanderpaul in the 26th over. V V S Laxman was still to open his account when play was called off. Earlier, West Indies rode on attacking knocks from Ramnaresh Sarwan, Chris Gayle and Chanderpaul to register the highest total in the series so far. Sarwan top-scored with 84 off 88 balls while Gayle and Chanderpaul came up with belligerent knocks of 72 and 74 respectively. Gayle and Chanderpaul were associated in a 149-run stand for the fourth wicket to provide the thrust to the West Indian innings. India opted for a three-pronged pace attack while leaving out leg-spinner Anil Kumble but that could not prevent West Indies from scoring freely. Ajit Agarkar went for over ten runs an over, conceding 63 from his six overs and other bowlers were also hardly impressive. Harbhajan Singh, the most successful bowler with two wickets, gave away 59 runs from his 10 overs. West Indies were off to a steady start before Gayle provided the momentum to the innings. After Wavell Hinds (10) was caught by V V S Laxman off Javagal Srinath in the ninth over with the score on 36, Gayle went on the offensive and stepped up the scoring. Gayle struck 12 fours and two sixes in his 68-ball 72 before falling as the third wicket with the score on 119. In between, Ganguly had sent back Marlon Samuels, caught behind by Rahul Dravid, for 16. Then came the brilliant partnership for the fourth wicket between Chanderpaul and Sarwan that provided the thrust for a huge total. The two took the score to 268 before both fell in quick succession. Harbhajan Singh claimed his second wicket by dismissing Chanderpaul, who hit eight boundaries in his 77-ball knock, in the 46th over. In the next over, Sarwan stepped out and attempted a big heave against Ashish Nehra but only managed to give a faint outside edge to wicketkeeper Dravid. Sarwans 88-ball innings contained six fours and two sixes. Ricardo Powell, playing his first game in the series, and Ridley Jacobs added 28 runs in 20 balls to take the score to 300. Powell remained unbeaten on 19 off 18 balls that included a six while jacobs was not out on nine. Lara cleared of match-fixing charges NEW DELHI, Nov 12: Star West Indian batsman Brian Lara has been cleared of match-fixing charges by the countrys Cricket Board following an internal inquiry into the allegations. West Indies Cricket Board president wes hall announced in port of Spain yesterday that the inquiry by prominet Barbadian Attorney-at-Law Elliott Mottley found no evidence to support the allegations made against lara by Indias Central Bureau of Investigations in its report on match-fixing and betting in cricket. "Mr Mottleys investigation on behalf of the West Indies Cricket Board has indicated that the allegations made against brian were unfounded and not supported by any evidence," hall was quoted as saying by a report on the website of West Indies Cricket Board. CBIs report, released in November 2000, had mentioned that an Indian bookmaker had claimed to have paid Lara US $20,000 to perform below par in two one-day matches against India in 1994. "We now consider that this matter is hereby officially closed. We wrote to Brians lawyers informing them that the matter is officially closed and that the allegations made against him were unfounded," Hall said. WICB has sent the report to the International Cricket Council, he said. (PTI) |
Salwan blames AAFI, SAI for lack of seriousness NEW DELHI, Nov 12: Sushil Salwan, who probed the alleged dope case of Sunita Rani and cleared her of all charges, has blamed the Amatuer Athletic Federation of India (AAFI) and the Sports Authority of India (SAI) for the lack of seriousness to control dope in the country. "There are many ways by which an athlete can escape from being tested positive. Random tests are not done frequently and both AAFI and SAI are not serious about the issue," Salwan told UNI after he his findings were disclosed at a press conference yesterday. Salwan, who is also the AAFI vice president, said athletes could prepare and neutralise the effects of drug testing if they knew when the tests would be conducted. "Year round short notice and no-notice testing are the most effective means to curtail the use of drugs as they put the athletes always at risk of being tested," he observed. The AAFI vice president said the laboratories needed to maintain high standards of practice in order to retain the respect of the sports community. "Our labs here are not ioc accredited. The SAI has been very casual on the issue. It has not taken adequate steps to get accredited and has applied for an ISO 9002 certificate, whereas the requirement of International Olympic Council (IOC) is ISO 17025," he noted. Salwan said the labs should be updated and made research oriented. The doctors should study and research to legally enhance performance, in a scientific manner. He said some vitamin and mineral supplement contain banned substances. "The SAI, AAFI and Indian Olympic Association should carry out a complete check on this and take coercive and remedial steps against such food supplements and its manufacturers," he added. The AAFI vice president said scientific and foolproof methods of testing were not adopted in any of the dope test laboratories in the country. "Samples should be collected after a practice session as samples collected after rest may not show the correct results. There is a need for a well planned course for coaches, doctors and sample collecting officers to understand each and very aspects of dope testing," he added. Salwan said coaches and team doctors should be made responsible as athletes are always under the supervision of the coach and a regular follow up with team doctor with vital data regarding performance could assist the Federation or SAI to tackle several problem including dope. He also stressed the need for strict adherence to the rules and regulations imposed by IOC and AAFI regarding dope control. Raising a cloud of doubts, the AAFI vice president stressed that all findings should be made public. He, however, declined to comment on whether earlier findings were being kept secret. On his findings on Sunita Rani case, Salwan said the Busan dope should be challenged and the case be taken up with the appropriate authority. "There exist gross irregularities and discrepancies in the A and B reports the difference being approximately 250 per cent. Moreover, dates were missing from the instrument printouts submitted by the doping control center, Kist, Korea," he observed. "A DNA test or any other test should be carried on the B sample of Sunita Rani and checked with her DNA from blood sample to ensure that the urine sample collected at Patiala was hers...The B Sample, presently available at the dope control center here, should be immediately sent to IOC Accredited Dope Laboratory for testing," he added. Salwan said the food supplement taken by Sunita, should be sent for chemical analysis to ascertain whether it contained any contaminated substance. He blamed sai for not carrying out a dope test immediately on the return of Sunita from Busan. "The SAI should immediately carry out the needful now, just to check the level of nandrolone, if any present," the AAFI vice president added. Salwan said there was no need to depend on Russian coaches. "These coaches are neither enterprising nor carry out any research or prepare documentation on their athletes...Our coaches, should be trained and educated to come up to the international standards," he added. RANJI TROPHY JAMSHEDPUR, Nov 12: The fourth and final days play of the Ranji Trophy match between Jammu and Kashmir and host Bihar was called off without a ball being bowled today at the Keenan Stadium due to inclement weather prevailing since last evening. The steel city had light drizzles at frequent intervals since last evening and the umpires - R Radhakrishnan and K Srinivasan - of Tamil Nadu therefore called off the match after the scheduled tea break. As the first innings could not be completed during the last four days of the match, no team would get any point as per the new Ranji Trophy rules, officials said. Rain washes out last days Assam-Orissa play GUWAHATI: Unseasonal torrents have washed out the last days play between Assam and Orissa in the Ranji Trophy match giving the hosts a vital first innings lead and a crucial point. Not a single ball could be bowled today as slow drizzle since last night made the ground slippery and unplayable completely. Assam had taken a vital 17-run lead and garnered one crucial point, as per the new point system introduced this season. When the stumps were drawn for the third day yesterday, Assam were 364 for seven in reply to Orissas first innings total of 346 all out. Thanks to two mumbaikars Manoj Jogelkar (103) and Kiran Powar (111), imported by Coach Lalchand Rajput from Mumbai, Assam put up a spirited fightback after bowling out Orissa for 347. However, once they departed Assam lost six quick wickets and then struggled hard to take the first innings lead. After last years humiliation, Assam did restore some pride with this match by getting the single point. As per the new system, first innings lead is one point, outright victory is 2 points and innings defeat is three points. Mumbai defeat Hyderabad by 69 runs, Log 2 points HYDERABAD: Mumbai scored a resounding 69-run victory against hosts Hyderabad and logged two points for the outright victory on the final day of the four-day Ranji trophy cricket match at Gymkhana grounds here today. Chasing a victory target of 306, the hosts were bundled out for 236 in 98.5 overs, few minutes after tea. Hyderabad, resuming at 110 for 5, saw Anirudh Singh and Shivaji Yadav put up a brave fight and take the score beyond the 200-run mark. The duo added 42 runs for the sixth wicket but Mumbai spinners Rajesh Pawar and Sairaj Bahutule called the shots and troubled the batsmen frequently with their flight. Rajesh Pawar dismissed Anirudh Singh for a well made 60 inclusive of eight hits to the fence while Shivaji was unbeaten with a skilfully scripted 78, with nine boundaries. Debutant wicket-keeper Iibrahim Kaleel played a patient innings and tried to block one end by facing 62 balls in a space of 79 minutes to score 17 but was well taken by Wassim Jaffer in slips to give Avishkar Salvi his third wicket. Earlier the hosts, after bundling out Mumbai for paltry 98 in the first innings, could not convert the advantage into a formidable innings as they folded up at 130. Starting with a deficit of 32 runs, Mumbai started the second essay with style and piled up 337 before packing the five top order Hyderabad batsmen to pavilion for 110. Mumbai bowlers ensured a victory as the team opened their account in the Ranji season with full two points. (PTI) |
Michael Holding Column The West Indian renaissance continues away from home, at least to a degree. They ended up winning this the first One Day International in the seven match series but they certainly cannot be totally happy with their performance. There is always going to be something in any game that you look back on and think it could have been done a little better but sometimes that is just one incident that could or could not be a significant turning point. That is not the case for the West Indies in this game. Once again coach Roger Harper especially and the captain Hooper must be a bit disappointed in the general fielding of the team. The first two test matches saw some atrocious catching, even catches put down in two innings, but things seemed to have been turned around with both the catching and ground fielding looking a lot better in the drawn third Test. The fielding in Jamshedpur again left a lot to be desired. At times even basic things like backing up the throws was being ignored. The ultimate aim of the West Indies hierarchy has to be getting everything right for the World Cup in South Africa starting in February 2003.These games here in India against arguably one of the better teams in this version of the game, anyone who doubts that fact had better look at their results in the UK recently and the ICC Trophy in Sri Lanka, have to be used as the medium through which to get that done. Everything right not only means the right combination of cricketers in the team and the right tactics to employ with that combination but also getting this team to being one of the best fielding combinations there is around. Just have a look at the better performing one day teams around and see if any of them are poor in the field, none. The two just dont go together, even Indias improved results in this form of the game can be attributed to their improvement in the field. Of course using the games alone will never be enough and the coach will have to drill a lot of work into this squad so that their improvement is not just shown in the odd game but on a continuos basis. On the positive side, the batsmen can again be proud of the way they performed chasing the pretty big score of 283 set by India. Hinds, Samuels and Sarwan batted beautifully and although it would have been better in every regard if one of them had carried on and made a century, none could be said to have played a careless or reckless shot on their dismissal. Sarwan again in the end showed composure well beyond his experience and years, bringing the West Indies home in a tight situation. It was just his second One Day International fifty and by far the most important knock played by him so far. (TCM) Ranji Trophy JAMSHEDPUR, Nov 11: Bihar were struggling at 142 for two in reply to Jammu and Kashmirs mammoth first innings total of 532 for eight declared on the penultimate day of the four-day Ranji Trophy match at Keenan Stadium here today. Resuming at 512 for eight, Jammu and Kashmir added 20 runs this morning in six overs before declaring their innings. Overnight batsman Ashwini Gupta, who was batting on 188 at stumps, reached his second double hundred in first class cricket and remained unbeaten on 203 after facing 368 deliveries in 508 minutes. He hit 18 fours. Ashwani is a senior all-round of Jammu and Kashmir and is currently working with Accountant General (AG) office, Jammu. The other overnight batsman Surender Singh remained not out on three. In reply, Bihars openers Nikhilesh Ranjan and Shabbir Hussain got off to a brilliant start to stick 76 runs when left arm spinner Jagtar Singh separated the pair. He had well-settled Nikhilesh Ranjan caught by Kanwaljit Singh for 47 including eight fours. The host team received another blow when Shabbir Hussain was adjudged Leg Before Wicket against medium pacer skipper Vijay Sharma after eight overs. Hussain notched up 33 with the help of two boundaries. Bihar skipper Rajiv Kumar, who walked in after Nikhileshs dismissal, along with M Sengupta, played a responsible knock making unbroken 43 runs for the third wicket. Rajiv was batting on 39 with the help of six fours, while Sengupta was on seven when play was called off five minutes into the post-tea session due to bad light. Gambhir, Manhas flay Railways attack as Delhi take huge lead NEW DELHI: Opener Gautam Gambhir cracked an unbeaten double century and put on 336 runs with centurion Mithun Manhas as Delhi took a mammoth 302-run first innings lead against defending champions Railways in an elite Group A league match of the Ranji Trophy Cricket Tournament here today. At close of play on the third day, Railways were placed at 90 for one in their second innings, still 212 runs behind Delhis first innings score of 507 for four declared. After losing Shreyas Khanolkar in the sixth over for 11, Railways were struggling to avoid the ignominy of a loss in their first match of the Ranji season and their chance of surviving the final day rests mainly on two not out batsmen Amit Pagnis and Tejinder Pal Singh who were batting on 37 and 39 respectively. Delhis two overnight batsmen Gambhir and Manhas continued their brilliant form today and sent the opposition bowlers on a leatherhunt. Manhas was out for 158 when he was clean bowled by Kulamani Parida but Gambhir remained unconquered on 233 which included 32 boundaries. Displaying tremendous character, Gambhir, who batted for 613 minutes and faced 411 balls, dispatched the hapless bowlers all around the park on the way to his second double century in first class cricket. Gambhirs first double ton (214) had also come against Railways, in the Ranji Trophy pre-quarterfinal last year at the Karnail Singh Stadium. The two batsmen, who had showed a lot of patience yesterday, scored the runs quickly today which prompted Delhi captain Vijay Dahiya to declare the innings at the stroke of tea. **** Assam take vital first innings lead against Orissa GUWAHATI: Hosts Assam today took a surprising yet convincing first innings lead against Orissa in their group league match of the Ranji Trophy being played at the Naligaon Railway Stadium. When the stumps were drawn for the third day, Assam were 364 for seven in reply to Orissas first innings total of 346 all out. Tomorrow being the last day of the match, an outright result is a remote possibility and thus Assam are all set to gain a crucial five points from the match. However, all credit for Assams achievement goes to two Mumbaikars imported by coach Lalchand Rajput. Manoj Jogelkar (103) and Kiran Pawar(111) did not lose the opportunity bestowed on them by Lalchand Rajput as they not only scored centuries each but scored 202 runs for the second wicket to seal the fate of Orissa. Orissa, did, however come back strongly once they could send back Pawar and Jogelkar and caught Assam by the collar when it was about to eclipse the Orissa total. Assam lost four quick wickets in succession giving a glimmer of hope to the Orissa camp but captain Zakaria and off spinner Sukhvinder Singh saw to it that the first innings lead was taken. They managed to come out of the stranglehold Orissa created around them with Sukhvinder showing more aggressiveness. However, Zakaria was unlucky when he threw his wicket for a needless run out. This morning, taken aback by gallant fight back by Assam, Orissa came with a definite plan to remove the duo who had frustrated the Orissa bowlers for the whole of yesterday. After complete failure of Debasish Mohanty, it was left to Ajay Barik to end the massive partnership. He got the scalp of Jogelkar who gave a catch to Satpathy. Later, talking to newsmen, he said it was one of his best innings. Pawar too did not last long after completing the century. He licked a delivery to wicket keeper Gopal off Satpathy. Pawars classic innings consisted of 14 boundaries to the fence spannig over 264 minutes. Barik then ran through the brittle middle order of Assam bagging first Sumit Ranjan Das, then Sunil Vishnatahn and then Mrigen. Assam were at one point 272 for two but a flurry of wickets saw them sliping to 331 for seven. With 15 runs still required, Orissa sensed a possible opening to get the first innings lead and brought in Debasish Mohanty. But he had a bad match and was clobbered all over the ground by Zakaria and Sukhvinder who saw that Assam take the most important lead. "We are desperate to get that. We knew we could make it," said Assam captain Zakaria Zuffri. With more than two hours of play lost due to bad light today, it is now near certain that an outright win is not possible leaving Assam to take the first innings lead. (Agencies) BCCI for further precautionary measure in rest one dayers KOLKATA, Nov 12: Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Jagmohan Dalmiya today expressed dissappointment over the crowd behaviour during the third one-dayer between India and West Indies at Rajkot and said further precationary measure would be taken to prevent recurence of such incident in the remaining four one dayers. "I dont have any immediate reaction to give. But we have to make sure that such situation does not arise in further matches", Mr Dalmiya told UNI. He said Board Secretary S K Nair was present at the venue and he was talking with the concerned persons there in Rajkot. Asked if he would think twice about the next one day match at Ahmedabad, he said there was no reason why the venue has to be changed. "We have already experienced troubles at different venues so it can happen anywhere", Mr Dalmiya observed. Crowd problem had been witnessed in the very first one day match at Jamshedpur on November 6 and Nagpur on last Saturday. Gujarat has two more venues for one dayers- Ahmedabad and Vadodara- of the seven-match series. (UNI) Kumble, Agarkar dropped for next two one-dayers RAJKOT, Nov 12: The national selectors today cracked the whip on the non-performers and dropped veteran leg-spinner Anil Kumble and all-rounder Ajit Agarkar from the Indian squad for the next two one-day matches against the West Indies. Both Kumble and Agarkar disappointed with their performance in the first three matches of the series though Agarkar did score a scintillating 95 in the first game at Jamshedpur. Tamil Nadu paceman L Balaji and Railways left-arm spinner Murali Kartik have been inducted into the 15-member side which also includes wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel as a cover for Rahul Dravid. The squad was announced by cricket board secretary S K Nair here. Kumble failed to impress in the two games that he played in, returning figures of 1-48 from seven overs in Jamshedpur and 0-33 from six overs in Nagpur, and was dropped for the third match at Rajkot today. Agarkar fared well in the first match scoring 95 and claiming one for 42 from nine overs but has disappointed since. He was hit for 47 runs from seven overs in Nagpur and 63 from six today. Kartiks inclusion is curious since the spinner missed Railways ranji trophy match against Delhi, which concluded today, due to an injury. Squad: Sourav Ganguly (capt), Virendra Sehwag, Dinesh Mongia, Rahul Dravid, V V S Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Mohammad Kaif, Harbhajan Singh, Javagal Srinath, Ashish Nehra, J P Yadav, L Balaji, Murali Kartik, Sanjay Bangar, Parthiv Patel. (PTI) Pakistan beat Zimbabwe by 119 runs in first test HARARE, Nov 12: Pakistan beat Zimbabwe by 119 runs on the fourth day of the first test today to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
