Injury worries in both camps ahead of second one-dayer NAGPUR, Nov 8: Already 0-1 down in the series, India were battling injury worries to key players ahead of the second one-day international against West Indies here tomorrow with doubts over the fitness of Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag. Dravid had developed cramps in his legs during the first match in Jamshedpur and wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel, who is not a part of the 14-member one-day squad, has been asked to join the team for the next two matches as a contingency measure. Sehwag is suffering from a mild fever and sore throat and did not participate in the nets today but was quite confident of playing in tomorrows match. With Sachin Tendulkar already out of the one-day series due to a hamstring strain, the fresh injury worries threaten to jeopardise Indias chances of levelling the series tomorrow. West Indies were also not free from such problems, with three players, including skipper Carl Hooper, having fitness worries. Hooper has a knee problem on his right leg while Cameron Cuffy was suffering with a hamstring injury. Pedro Collins was yet to recover fully from his back injury. In a bid to provide maximum time to their players to declare themselves fit, both the teams held back the announcement of their final eleven until tomorrow morning. But there was a strong possibility of Javagal Srinath and Sanjay Bangar being included in the Indian team in place of J P Yadav and Ashish Nehra. "We will not announce the playing eleven now as we would like to see how Dravid shapes up during the nets and then we will have a team meeting before declaring the team tomorrow," Ganguly said, hoping that both Dravid, who also has a stiff back, and Sehwag would be fit to play tomorrow. With the newly-laid track at the Vidarbha Cricket Association ground sporting a lot of grass, the hosts were likely to go in with three pacemen - Srinath, Bangar and Ajit Agarkar. This combination will also give a greater strength to the batting line-up as all the three have been among the runs recently. The inclusion of three pacemen means that either of the two spinners - Anil Kumble or Harbhajan Singh - will have to sit out tomorrows game and an indication to that effect was available from Indian coach John Wright who felt that these two seasoned bowlers must be held largely responsible for Indias defeat at Jamshepur. "The two spinners gave away 116 runs from 16 overs and that was a bit too much. We need to improve in that area if we have to win tomorrows match which I am sure will be tough," Wright said. Insisting that Srinath was not dropped for the first game but "only rested", Ganguly said, "I had made it very clear after their first tie at Jamshedpur that we all know what Srinath is capable of and we wanted to try out J P Yadav as an all-rounder as we knew very little about him". Ganguly, who was scheduled to arrive here last evening but reached only this morning alongwith Patel, was also aware that he himself was due for a good score here. "I need to score runs and I hope I will get a big score over here," said the skipper whose 130 and four for 21 against Sri Lanka in 1998-99 are the best batting and bowling performances by an Indian at this ground. His west Indian counterpart was also confident of leaving behind his lean trot on this tour but said his bad form did not really matter as long as the team was winning. "It is not a big concern though I would like to contribute to the cause of the team with the bat," he said. He said the team had made a good start in Jamshedpur and it would now look to maintain the momentum. "Now we should make sure of keeping the lead and increase it as well," he said. "We have been criticised for our performances in the past and for a change it was good that our batsmen kept their nerves during tight situation. India too had their chances when we stumbled towards the end but Ramnaresh Sarwan, Wavell Hinds and Marlon Samuels played exceptionally well to see us through. "Tomorrow if we can get a flying start I dont see any reason why we cannot take a 2-0 lead," Hooper said. Asked about the wicket, Hooper, who is the lone survivor of the 1987 West Indies team which beat India by ten runs at this venue, said it was a better track than the one at Jamshedpur. "It looks like a a good one-day wicket and hope we can repeat our previous performance this time as well," he said. With the pitch looking helpful to pace bowling, the West Indian fast bowlers hold an advantage. The visitors may also be tempted to include an additional batsman in Ricardo Powell in place of Mahendra Nagamootoo who was unimpressive in the first match. Teams (from): India: Sourav Ganguly (Capt), Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, V V S Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Mohammed Kaif, Dinesh Mongia, Harbhajan Singh, Sanjay Bangar, Anil Kumble, Javagal Srinath, Ajit Agarkar, J P Yadav, Ashish Nehra and Parthiv Patel (wk). West Indies: Carl Hooper (Capt), Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Pedro Collins, Corey Collymore, Cameron Cuffy, Mervyn Dillon, Vasbert Drakes, Darren Ganga, Chris Gayle, Ryan Hinds, Wavell Hinds, Ridley Jacobs, Mahendra Nagamootoo, Ricardo Powell, Marlon Samuels and Ramnaresh Sarwan. Umpires: Ashoka De Silva (Sri Lanka) and K Hariharan (India). Match referee: Mike Proctor (S Africa). (PTI) |
Jeev tied for 2nd place in PGA Tour Q-school NEW DELHI, Nov 8: Ace Indian golfer Jeev Milkha Singh looks all set to qualify for the final stage of the US PGA Tour qualifying school when he shot his second consecutive three-under 69 at the black horse course in Seaside, California, According to information received here, Chandigarh based Jeev was tied for the second place at six-under 210 after three rounds. The other Indian in contention, Arjun Atwal, was on the bubble after his third-round one-over 73, which placed him at tied 20th place at three-over 219. The top 21 players from the venue will make it to the final stage of the Q-school, scheduled to be played over six rounds at the PGA west course at La Quinta, California from December 4-9. The third Indian interest in the tournament, Sweden S Daniel Chopra, who honed his golfing skills in Delhi, however lost ground following a disastrous six-over 78 at the Stonebridge Country Club in McKinney, Texas. That pushed him down to tied 47th place at four-over 220. He would now require an exceptional final round as the qualifying mark is projected to be a score of one-under 287. Jeev, who qualified for the final stage last year but could only get a limited exemption to the buy.Com tour, opened with a level-par 72 on Tuesday, shot a three-under 69 on Wednesday to climb up to tied fifth place. His card of 69 on day three was the second best following a 67 by Doug Labelle II of Arizona. The Indian was just one stroke off the leader Rob Bradley of Louisville, Kentucky. Bradley had rounds of 70, 69 and 70 on the three days. It has been a stupendous effort from the Chandigarh golfer as he could not manage even a single practice round on the course following a dash from halfway across the world in Japan on Sunday where he played the Philip Morris Championship on the Japanese PGA Tour. Atwal, winner of this year S Caltex Singapore Masters and the current leader of the Asian PGA Tour order of merit, shot a one-under-par 71 on day two after an opening-round 75. The European PGA tour regular from Kolkata would require a solid round on the final day to make his first appearance on the final stage of the qualifying school. (UNI) |

Well done England but well still win: Warne BRISBANE, Nov 8: Shane Warne said he wasnt surprised by Englands magnificent fightback today but remained confident Australia will still win the first Ashes test. The Australian leg-spinner said his team always knew the English would try and fight their way back into the match after being thoroughly outplayed on the opening day. "I thought england came out and played pretty well. They showed theyve got a bit of fire and a bit of spirit," Warne said. "England were ahead on points today. They played very positive, aggressive cricket, which we knew they would." But he was quick to qualify that praise, claiming the touring side had been fortunate and could have been in real trouble if his team mates had taken all their chances, which included two dropped chances and a missed stumping. "It might have been a completely different story if wed taken our chances," Warne said. "England teams have always had a lot of character but its just a matter of whether they can sustain it long enough". "England can come out and have a good session here or there and a good day but I think over a five-day test match weve always been able to assert pressure with both the bat and ball." England reached the close on friday a daunting 334 runs behind Australia, but still in a much healthier position than at the start of the day. Englands bowlers captured the last eight Australian wickets for 114 runs to restrict them to 492 after they started the day at 364 for two. Marcus Trescothick and Mark Butcher then made half-centuries after both being dropped to take England to 158 for one. Ashley Giles said the day showed the Ashes Series was not going to be the foregone conclusion most people expected. "This is a very strong Aussie batting line-up but when we hit our straps we can bowl anyone out as quick as anyone else," Giles said. (AGENCIES) |
12th State Billiards,
Snooker Championship Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 8: Once again, likewise last year, Kamal Rohmetra and Vishal Abrol have sailed into the senior Snooker final and will be meeting for the title clash tomorrow at 2 pm at the Billiards Hall, M A Stadium, here. While it was an easy victory for Kamal, who sidelined Sanjeev Gupta in straight frames in the best of seven frames match played this afternoon, Vishal faced tough resistance from young cueist, Kuldeep Sharma and saved his skin narrowly that too in the final seventh frame. In the first semi-final, hot-shot Kamal spared little chance for Sanjeev to come out of the troubled waters and won all the four frames with high margins. The final score was 66-20, 61-28, 84-40, 68-36. In the nail-biting second semi-final, though Vishal won, yet it not a cake-walk for him. Winning first two frames, Vishal was looking confident, but suddenly his confidence was shaked by young opponent, Kuldeep Sharma, who first equalised the score 2-2 winning the following two frames and later went ahead bringing the score 3-2 in his favour. However, experienced Vishal made a good start in the sixth frame which he won 60-49. In the deciding seventh frame, at one point of time, both Kuldeep and Vishal were playing at equal score of 14-14. Vishal slowly picked-up his score and managed eight points lead over Kuldeeps 14 points. Tense Kuldeep, who has yet to develop the match temperament, played lose shots giving Vishal ample of chances to add points to his improving tally. Seeing Kuldeep losing the opportunities and placing the ball open, Vishal played superb in the rest of the time. He did not spare even a single point for Kuldeep to improve his 14 points score and took away the deciding frame 54-14 and match also. The score: 44-41, 66-27, 28-44, 38-56, 35-58, 60-49, 54-14. Now, the final between Vishal Abrol and Kamal Rohmetra will be played tomorrow at 2 pm. The Billiards final will take place on November 10 at 4 pm, between Kamal and Gautam Lakra. It will be followed by the prize distribution at 6.30 pm at the same venue. |

Venues should ban bottles and cans: Chauhan NEW DELHI, Nov 8: Expressing dismay at the unruly crowd behaviour during the opening one-dayer between India and West Indies at Jamshedpur, Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) vice president Chetan Chauhan has called for a complete ban on carrying of drinking water bottles and eatables within the stadium premises. "Drinking water bottles, metal cans and eatables should not be brought inside the stadium. All associations should ask match venues to adhere to this strictly," Chauhan told UNI at the sidelines of a press conference yesterday to announce the Indian team for the second World Cup for the blind, which starts off in Chennai next month. Stressing on stricter enforcement of security norms, Chauhan said Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Jagmohan Dalmiyas stance to think hard before alloting international matches to "disturbance-prone" venues, was a "harsh decision". "Crowd disturbances on cricket ground anywhere in the world is an unfortunate incident. Even two bad guys only can create havoc by their unruly behaviour," the former Indian opener observed. Giving a clean chit to associations, he said it was the responsibility of the police to ensure security and not of the associations. The spectators at the Keenan Stadium at Jamshedpur began throwing missiles including water bottles on the ground when the West Indies needed 13 runs from the last three overs to overtake Indias 283 for six, holding up the game for quite some time.
