India settle for a draw to take the series 2-0 KOLKATA, Nov 3: India made a drab affair of what could have been an exciting finale to the test series, opting for a draw in the third and final cricket match against West Indies here today despite having been placed in a position of strength by centurions Sachin Tendulkar and V V S Laxman. Tendulkar and Laxman virtually ruled out a defeat for the home team but Indias declaration of their second innings did not come till late in the final session after reaching a score of 471 for eight. With a victory target of 333 almost impossible to achieve in the remaining few overs of the day, West Indies, who had scored 497 in their first innings to take a 139-run lead, decided not to come out for their second innings. The draw meant the three-match series, which was already won by India following their wins in Mumbai and Chennai, ended with a 2-0 result in favour of the home team. Laxman, who put on a record 214 runs in a crucial fifth wicket partnership with Tendulkar, remained unbeaten on 154, his nearly nine-hour knock studded with 17 boundaries. Tendulkar, who had completed his 31st test hundred yesterday, batted beautifully this morning before being dismissed for 176 shortly after the lunch break. The master batsman faced 298 deliveries and struck 26 fours. Tendulkar was declared the man-of-the-match while Harbhajan Singh, who picked up 20 wickets from the three tests, was named the man-of-the series. Earlier, Tendulkar and Laxman, who came together when India were precariously placed at 87 for four, added 104 runs in an extended two and half hour morning session today to take the score to 299 for four at lunch. Tendulkar, who resumed at his overnight 114 in the team score of 195 for four, did the bulk of the scoring in the morning session. He showed a lot of urgency and scored at a very brisk pace which gave an impression that India were looking to declare their innings at around tea time. He hit nine fours in the morning session but also got a life on 171 when he was dropped by Chris Gayle off Jermaine Lawson at point, a short while after the two batsman posted the 200 run partnership. Laxman, who started from his yesterdays score of 34, was happy playing second fiddle to Tendulkar and reached his half-century with a fine drive between mid-on and long-on against Darren Powell. By lunch, they had already improved on the Indias previous best fifth wicket stand of 204 against West Indies by Sunil Gavaskar and Brijesh Patel achieved at Port of Spain in 1975-76. West Indies skipper Carl Hooper claimed the new ball after the 17th over of the day, 81st of the innings, and used six bowlers but failed to unsettle the Indian batsmen who looked in no discomfort ever. But Tendulkar got out immediately after the lunch break Wheb Chris gayle came up with a fine catch at wide gully off seamer Cameron Cuffy. The fall of Tendulkar, when India were leading by 160 runs, put the brakes on the scoring with Laxman and the young wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel batting very cautiously. Laxman, who was on 66 at lunch break, became very defensive in a bid to prevent a collapse. It was only towards the end of the post-lunch session that runs began to come easily once again for India. Laxman, who took a long time in progressing from 66 to his nineties, hit a boundary to move to 96 before a single brought him within three runs of his fourth test hundred. He then pulled Carl Hooper to the mid-wicket fence to bring up his second consecutive century at the Eden Gardens just before the tea break. Laxmans previous knock at this ground was the famous 281 against Australia last year. Patel, who had scored a career-best 47 in the first innings, once again showed remarkable application and played a few fine strokes as India took tea comfortably placed at 369 for five. Despite enjoying a 230-run lead at this moment, India surprisingly did not declare their innings and continued to play after the tea break. Patel, who defied the West Indian attack for 94 balls, was run out for 27 in the second over after tea. India lost their sixth wicket at 373. Harbhajan Singh enlivened the meaningless proceedings with some lusty hitting during his brief stay at the crease. He blasted three fours and two sixes in his 18-ball knock to make 26 runs before being caught by Hooper off Marlon Samuels. Javagal Srinath completed his 1,000 test runs during his 21-run knock as the lower order batsmen showed their skills with the bat. All this while, Laxman was scoring steadily and reached his third 150 of his career. The two teams now go into a seven match one-day series starting in Jamshedpur on Wednesday. Chess Olympiad BLED, SLOVENIA, Nov 3: Continuing their good run, Indian men toppled United States 3-1 in the eighth round of the 35th Chess Olympiad underway at the Bled Sports Hall here. The victory was a repeat performance of their Istanbul Olympiad victory over the 10th seeds United States. The Indians however had a tough day losing to their much higher rated rivals Bulgaria, 2-1. The Russians stayed in lead in the mens section with a 2.5-1.5 victory over Netherlands, while Hungary (22.5 pts) and China (21.5) are in the second and third spots respectively. While Alexander Grishcuk and Peter Svidler won their games, Sergey Rublevsky suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Friso Nijboer on the fourth board. In the womens section, the second seeds Georgia stayed in contention for the gold with thumping 2.5-0.5 victory over the reigning champions and the top seeds China. Two pints behind the leaders are United States with 17 points. The Indian men stayed on line with their strategy of winning with white pieces and drawing with black. On the top board, GM Krishnan Sasikiran defeated GM Gregory Kaidanov in 54 moves from the queens gambit declined variation. Sasikiran improved upon his opening edge to obtain attacking situation when Kaidanov surrender the double bishop advantage. This was a very much welcomed by white who exploited black weakness systematically to pluck a couple of pawns. Kaidanov gave up the struggle when he lost the thirs in a rook and minor piece endgame. It was im Surya Sekhar Ganguly playing on the third board against GM Larry Christiansen who gave India the first victory today. Ganguly faced the caro-kan defence and castled on the opposite wing to launch an attack on the black king. Not over extending his position, Ganguly exchanged queens to win a pawn on the 30th move and wrapped up the game in 40 moves. On the third board, GM P Harikrishna drew in 50 moves against GM Boris Gulko in a caro kan defence game. Gulko who came up with an innovation and steered the game to an ending in hope of out playing his young rival. However, Harikrishna gave a fitting demonstration of his fine endgame technique for which his trainer GM Vladimirov is renowned for, to achieve a comfortable draw. GM Abhijit Kunte came out with other draw for India, against GM Alexander Ivanov from the black side of the sicilian defence. Ivanov who had the spatial advantage form the opening tried to open up the kingside for launch an attack. However he did not have sufficient central control to achieve his plan. Kunte freed his pieces with the timely center break and forced exchanges. With insufficient material left on the board to continue for a win, the players split the point on the 40th move. It was a sad turn of events today for the Indian women who at one point of time were on the verge of upstaging the highly rated Bulgarian team. It was a tragic draw for WGM S Vijayalakshmi who took on Stefanova Antoaneta, who has the mens grandmaster title. Vijayalakshmi played excellant from the white side of the slav defence to win a knight on the 24th move. However she failed to consolidate her position and started given away pawn after pawns. The game finally endedin a draw after a marathon 64 moves with white having a lone bishop against Stefenovas four pawns and a victory not possible for either side. On the second board, Aarthie Ramaswamy committed hara-kiri by blundering awayin a nice position. Facing the catalan defence with black pieces against Margarita Voiska, Aarthie held white a bay. But all of a sudden he went in for a central pawn capture to allow whites pieces to surge ahead with drastic effect. On the 23rd move she had to part with an exchange due to a knight fork on D6. Aarthie continued until the 32nd move when she resigned. (UNI) |

Real Sachin reveals
himself By Michael Holding The curtain has come down on this three Test Exide series with the third and last Test match petering out into a tame draw. But not before the best four and a half days of test cricket for the series had been played during which both teams were in the ascendancy at various times of the match and at many points all three results of both teams having a chance of a win and the draw being possible. The West Indies showed a great deal of Character to come fighting back having lost the first two tests so comprehensively and should take some positives from this test into the one day series coming up. The lasting memory for most West Indies fans and avid watchers of the game though, apart from of course the West Indies fight back, would have to be the batting of Sachin Tendulkar in the second innings. Not many West Indians would have seen Sachin Tendulkar at his best. He had already toured the Caribbean on two occasions with visiting Indian touring teams and although he wasnt a total failure on either tour, he certainly didnt cover himself with glory, not after coming there with such a tall reputation. The first two tests in this series didnt see him at his best either, partly due to the fact that the pitches were not very conducive to good cricket and partly due to the fact that he seemed for some reason a bit tentative at the crease. The real Sachin Tendulkar revealed himself on this occasion. He got to the crease with his team in deep trouble at 87/4 and still quite a bit of work to do to erase the West Indies lead and then to put the game safely away. Understandably he seemed again a bit tentative but this time that was just a minor hiccup before he launched into his repertoire of shots. Pace or spin, whatever "spin" there was, seemed to matter none as he completely dominated the opposition bowling and in the meantime putting his partner VVS Laxman in the shade while they slowly but surely dug India out of the hole. The West Indian fans may not have enjoyed his innings initially, after all they would all have been praying for that elusive away from home victory, but in the end everyone would have to admire the mastery of the man and the innings in particular. His driving was superb, his cutting on a slow pitch immaculate, on a couple of occasions actually playing the cut shot as a second choice after the original, probably premeditated, shot didnt seem the right option. That is class. His injury in this test is a big blow for the Indians as they will surely miss his batting and part time bowling in the one dayers but the West Indies team, while certainly not celebrating an injury to a fellow professional, would be happy to not having to face him while he seems to be back at his ebullient best.
